    Lock-free Concurrent Data Structures

    Concurrent data structures are the data sharing side of parallel programming. Data structures give the means to the program to store data, but also provide operations to the program to access and manipulate these data. These operations are implemented through algorithms that have to be efficient. In the sequential setting, data structures are crucially important for the performance of the respective computation. In the parallel programming setting, their importance becomes more crucial because of the increased use of data and resource sharing for utilizing parallelism. The first and main goal of this chapter is to provide a sufficient background and intuition to help the interested reader to navigate in the complex research area of lock-free data structures.     Exploring the value of supporting multiple DSM protocols in Hardware DSM Controllers

    Journal ArticleThe performance of a hardware distributed shared memory (DSM) system is largely dependent on its architect's ability to reduce the number of remote memory misses that occur. Previous attempts to solve this problem have included measures such as supporting both the CC-NUMA and S-COMA architectures is the same machine and providing a programmable DSM controller that can emulate any DSM mechanism. In this paper we first present the design of a DSM controller that supports multiple DSM protocols in custom hardware, and allows the programmer or compiler to specify on a per-variable basis what protocol to use to keep that variable coherent. This simulated performance of this DSM controller compares favorably with that of conventional single-protocol custom hardware designs, often outperforming the conventional systems by a factor of two. To achieve these promising results, that multi-protocol DSM controller needed to support only two DSM architectures (CC-NUMA and S-COMA) and three coherency protocols (both release and sequentially consistent write invalidate and release consistent write update). This work demonstrates the value of supporting a degree of flexibility in one's DSM controller design and suggests what operations such a flexible DSM controller should support

    A comparison of software and hardware synchronization mechanisms for distributed shared memory multiprocessors

The designers of traditional multiprocessors have included hardware support only for simple operations such as compare-and-swap and load-linked/store-conditional, while high level synchronization primitives such as locks, barriers, and condition variables have been implemented in software [9,14,15]. With the advent of directory-based distributed shared memory (DSM) multiprocessors with significant flexibility in their cache controllers [7,12,17], it is worthwhile considering whether this flexibility should be used to support higher level synchronization primitives in hardware. In particular, as part of maintaining data consistency, these architectures maintain lists of processors with a copy of a given cache line, which is most of the hardware needed to implement distributed locks. We studied two software and four hardware implementations of locks and found that hardware implementation can reduce lock acquire and release times by 25-94% compared to well tuned software locks. In terms of macrobenchmark performance, hardware locks reduce application running times by up to 75% on a synthetic benchmark with heavy lock contention and by 3%-6% on a suite of SPLASH-2 benchmarks. In addition, emerging cache coherence protocols promise to increase the time spent synchronizing relative to the time spent accessing shared data, and our study shows that hardware locks can reduce SPLASH-2 execution times by up to 10-13% if the time spent accessing shared data is small. Although the overall performance impact of hardware lock mechanisms varies tremendously depending on the application, the added hardware complexity on a flexible architecture like FLASH [12] or Avalanche [7] is negligible, and thus hardware support for high level synchronization operations should be provided

    In this article, we present a Timed Petri Nets Processor which can be directly programmed using Petri Nets formalism vectors and matrixes. This processor can leverage the power of Petri Nets for modeling real-time systems and formally verify their properties, which prevent programming errors. The Petri Nets Processor was developed as an IP-core to be inserted in a Multi-Core system.     Hybrid Caching for Chip Multiprocessors Using Compiler-Based Data Classification

    The high performance delivered by modern computer system keeps scaling with an increasingnumber of processors connected using distributed network on-chip. As a result, memory accesslatency, largely dominated by remote data cache access and inter-processor communication, is becoming a critical performance bottleneck. To release this problem, it is necessary to localize data access as much as possible while keep efficient on-chip cache memory utilization. Achieving this however, is application dependent and needs a keen insight into the memory access characteristics of the applications. This thesis demonstrates how using fairly simple thus inexpensive compiler analysis memory accesses can be classified into private data access and shared data access. In addition, we introduce a third classification named probably private access and demonstrate the impact of this category compared to traditional private and shared memory classification. The memory access classification information from the compiler analysis is then provided to the runtime system through a modified memory allocator and page table to facilitate a hybrid private-shared caching technique. The hybrid cache mechanism is aware of different data access classification and adopts appropriate placement and search policies accordingly to improve performance. Our analysis demonstrates that many applications have a significant amount of both private and shared data and that compiler analysis can identify the private data effectively for many applications. Experimentsresults show that the implemented hybrid caching scheme achieves 4.03% performance improvement over state of the art NUCA-base caching

    On the design of a high-performance adaptive router for CC-NUMA multiprocessors

    Copyright © 2003 IEEEThis work presents the design and evaluation of an adaptive packet router aimed at supporting CC-NUMA traffic. We exploit a simple and efficient packet injection mechanism to avoid deadlock, which leads to a fully adaptive routing by employing only three virtual channels. In addition, we selectively use output buffers for implementing the most utilized virtual paths in order to reduce head-of-line blocking. The careful implementation of these features has resulted in a good trade off between network performance and hardware cost. The outcome of this research is a High-Performance Adaptive Router (HPAR), which adequately balances the needs of parallel applications: minimal network latency at low loads and high throughput at heavy loads. The paper includes an evaluation process in which HPAR is compared with other adaptive routers using FIFO input buffering, with or without additional virtual channels to reduce head-of-line blocking. This evaluation contemplates both the VLSI costs of each router and their performance under synthetic and real application workloads. To make the comparison fair, all the routers use the same efficient deadlock avoidance mechanism. In all the experiments, HPAR exhibited the best response among all the routers tested. The throughput gains ranged from 10 percent to 40 percent in respect to its most direct rival, which employs more hardware resources. Other results shown that HPAR achieves up to 83 percent of its theoretical maximum throughput under random traffic and up to 70 percent when running real applications. Moreover, the observed packet latencies were comparable to those exhibited by simpler routers.
