    Meso-scale FDM material layout design strategies under manufacturability constraints and fracture conditions

    In the manufacturability-driven design (MDD) perspective, manufacturability of the product or system is the most important of the design requirements. In addition to being able to ensure that complex designs (e.g., topology optimization) are manufacturable with a given process or process family, MDD also helps mechanical designers to take advantage of unique process-material effects generated during manufacturing. One of the most recognizable examples of this comes from the scanning-type family of additive manufacturing (AM) processes; the most notable and familiar member of this family is the fused deposition modeling (FDM) or fused filament fabrication (FFF) process. This process works by selectively depositing uniform, approximately isotropic beads or elements of molten thermoplastic material (typically structural engineering plastics) in a series of pre-specified traces to build each layer of the part. There are many interesting 2-D and 3-D mechanical design problems that can be explored by designing the layout of these elements. The resulting structured, hierarchical material (which is both manufacturable and customized layer-by-layer within the limits of the process and material) can be defined as a manufacturing process-driven structured material (MPDSM). This dissertation explores several practical methods for designing these element layouts for 2-D and 3-D meso-scale mechanical problems, focusing ultimately on design-for-fracture. Three different fracture conditions are explored: (1) cases where a crack must be prevented or stopped, (2) cases where the crack must be encouraged or accelerated, and (3) cases where cracks must grow in a simple pre-determined pattern. Several new design tools, including a mapping method for the FDM manufacturability constraints, three major literature reviews, the collection, organization, and analysis of several large (qualitative and quantitative) multi-scale datasets on the fracture behavior of FDM-processed materials, some new experimental equipment, and the refinement of a fast and simple g-code generator based on commercially-available software, were developed and refined to support the design of MPDSMs under fracture conditions. The refined design method and rules were experimentally validated using a series of case studies (involving both design and physical testing of the designs) at the end of the dissertation.     Computertomographie-basierte Bestimmung von Aortenklappenkalk und seine Assoziation mit Komplikationen nach interventioneller Aortenklappenimplantation (TAVI)

    Background: Severe aortic valve calcification (AVC) has generally been recognized as a key factor in the occurrence of adverse events after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). To date, however, a consensus on a standardized calcium detection threshold for aortic valve calcium quantification in contrast-enhanced computed tomography angiography (CTA) is still lacking. The present thesis aimed at comparing two different approaches for quantifying AVC in CTA scans based on their predictive power for adverse events and survival after a TAVI procedure.   Methods: The extensive dataset of this study included 198 characteristics for each of the 965 prospectively included patients who had undergone TAVI between November 2012 and December 2019 at the German Heart Center Berlin (DHZB). AVC quantification in CTA scans was performed at a fixed Hounsfield Unit (HU) threshold of 850 HU (HU 850 approach) and at a patient-specific threshold, where the HU threshold was set by multiplying the mean luminal attenuation of the ascending aorta by 2 (+100 % HUAorta approach). The primary endpoint of this study consisted of a combination of post-TAVI outcomes (paravalvular leak ≥ mild, implant-related conduction disturbances, 30-day mortality, post-procedural stroke, annulus rupture, and device migration). The Akaike information criterion was used to select variables for the multivariable regression model. Multivariable analysis was carried out to determine the predictive power of the investigated approaches.   Results: Multivariable analyses showed that a fixed threshold of 850 HU (calcium volume cut-off 146 mm3) was unable to predict the composite clinical endpoint post-TAVI (OR=1.13, 95 % CI 0.87 to 1.48, p=0.35). In contrast, the +100 % HUAorta approach (calcium volume cut-off 1421 mm3) enabled independent prediction of the composite clinical endpoint post-TAVI (OR=2, 95 % CI 1.52 to 2.64, p=9.2x10-7). No significant difference in the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was observed for either of the approaches.   Conclusions: The patient-specific calcium detection threshold +100 % HUAorta is more predictive of post-TAVI adverse events included in the combined clinical endpoint than the fixed HU 850 approach. For the +100 % HUAorta approach, a calcium volume cut-off of 1421 mm3 of the aortic valve had the highest predictive value.Hintergrund: Ein wichtiger Auslöser von Komplikationen nach einer Transkatheter-Aortenklappen-Implantation (TAVI) sind ausgeprägte Kalkablagerung an der Aortenklappe. Dennoch erfolgte bisher keine Einigung auf ein standardisiertes Messverfahren zur Quantifizierung der Kalklast der Aortenklappe in einer kontrastverstärkten dynamischen computertomographischen Angiographie (CTA). Die vorliegende Dissertation untersucht, inwieweit die Wahl des Analyseverfahrens zur Quantifizierung von Kalkablagerungen in der Aortenklappe die Prognose von Komplikationen und der Überlebensdauer nach einer TAVI beeinflusst.   Methodik: Der Untersuchung liegt ein umfangreicher Datensatz von 965 Patienten mit 198 Merkmalen pro Patienten zugrunde, welche sich zwischen 2012 und 2019 am Deutschen Herzzentrum Berlin einer TAVI unterzogen haben. Die Quantifizierung der Kalkablagerung an der Aortenklappe mittels CTA wurde einerseits mit einem starren Grenzwert von 850 Hounsfield Einheiten (HU) (HU 850 Verfahren) und andererseits anhand eines individuellen Grenzwertes bemessen. Letzterer ergibt sich aus der HU-Dämpfung in dem Lumen der Aorta ascendens multipliziert mit 2 (+100 % HUAorta Verfahren). Der primäre klinische Endpunkt dieser Dissertation besteht aus einem aus sechs Variablen zusammengesetzten klinischen Endpunkt, welcher ungewünschte Ereignisse nach einer TAVI abbildet (paravalvuläre Leckage ≥mild, Herzrhythmusstörungen nach einer TAVI, Tod innerhalb von 30 Tagen, post-TAVI Schlaganfall, Ruptur des Annulus und Prothesendislokation). Mögliche Störfaktoren, die auf das Eintreten der Komplikationen nach TAVI Einfluss haben, wurden durch den Einsatz des Akaike Informationskriterium ermittelt. Um die Vorhersagekraft von Komplikationen nach einer TAVI durch beide Verfahren zu ermitteln, wurde eine multivariate Regressionsanalyse durchgeführt.   Ergebnisse: Die multivariaten logistischen Regressionen zeigen, dass die Messung der Kalkablagerungen anhand der HU 850 Messung (Kalklast Grenzwert von 146 mm3) die Komplikationen und die Überlebensdauer nicht vorhersagen konnten (OR=1.13, 95 % CI 0.87 bis 1.48, p=0.35). Die nach dem +100 % HUAorta Verfahren (Kalklast Grenzwert von 1421 mm3) individualisierte Kalkmessung erwies sich hingegen als sehr aussagekräftig, da hiermit Komplikationen nach einer TAVI signifikant vorhergesagt werden konnten (OR=2, 95 % CI 1.52 bis 2.64, p=9.2x10-7). In Hinblick auf die postoperative Kaplan-Meier Überlebenszeitanalyse kann auch mit dem +100 % HUAorta Verfahren keine Vorhersage getroffen werden.   Fazit: Aus der Dissertation ergibt sich die Empfehlung, die Messung von Kalkablagerungen nach dem +100 % HUAorta Verfahren vorzunehmen, da Komplikationen wesentlich besser und zuverlässiger als nach der gängigen HU 850 Messmethode vorhergesagt werden können. Für das +100 % HUAorta Verfahren lag der optimale Kalklast Grenzwert bei 1421 mm3

    É com grande prazer que apresentamos a mais recente edição (a 11.ª) do Anuário Científico da Escola Superior de Tecnologia da Saúde de Lisboa. Como instituição de ensino superior, temos o compromisso de promover e incentivar a pesquisa científica em todas as áreas do conhecimento que contemplam a nossa missão. Esta publicação tem como objetivo divulgar toda a produção científica desenvolvida pelos Professores, Investigadores, Estudantes e Pessoal não Docente da ESTeSL durante 2021. Este Anuário é, assim, o reflexo do trabalho árduo e dedicado da nossa comunidade, que se empenhou na produção de conteúdo científico de elevada qualidade e partilhada com a Sociedade na forma de livros, capítulos de livros, artigos publicados em revistas nacionais e internacionais, resumos de comunicações orais e pósteres, bem como resultado dos trabalhos de 1º e 2º ciclo. Com isto, o conteúdo desta publicação abrange uma ampla variedade de tópicos, desde temas mais fundamentais até estudos de aplicação prática em contextos específicos de Saúde, refletindo desta forma a pluralidade e diversidade de áreas que definem, e tornam única, a ESTeSL. Acreditamos que a investigação e pesquisa científica é um eixo fundamental para o desenvolvimento da sociedade e é por isso que incentivamos os nossos estudantes a envolverem-se em atividades de pesquisa e prática baseada na evidência desde o início dos seus estudos na ESTeSL. Esta publicação é um exemplo do sucesso desses esforços, sendo a maior de sempre, o que faz com que estejamos muito orgulhosos em partilhar os resultados e descobertas dos nossos investigadores com a comunidade científica e o público em geral. Esperamos que este Anuário inspire e motive outros estudantes, profissionais de saúde, professores e outros colaboradores a continuarem a explorar novas ideias e contribuir para o avanço da ciência e da tecnologia no corpo de conhecimento próprio das áreas que compõe a ESTeSL.     Transformation of the business model to establish sustainable value in the consumer durables super store industry of Sri Lanka

    The business model of an organization, operates as the fundamental blue print of the planning process, which shapes the nature of the strategies executed during the course of operation. These strategies in turn are responsible for the value creation or value erosion that takes place during the operation of the organization determining its sustainability, and in a broader context the sustainability of the industry. The research is done for the Consumer Durables Super Store (CDSS) industry of Sri Lanka concerning the existing business model, the value erosion occurring as a result of it and the risk it carries to the sustainability of the industry. The theoretical aspect of the research to develop a relationship based business model was anchored on the understanding of existing frameworks relating to sustainable value and extracting relevant areas of each of these frameworks (alignment of value, transforming current strategies and service offerings to create sustainable value) to develop a suitable hybrid framework with modifications to the literature to suite the research context.Ten in-depth interviews with CDSS organizational representatives holding leadership, sales and marketing management positions, and two focus group sessions with fifty selected customers were conducted in a virtual environment due to the prevailing pandemic situation. The data collected were analyzed with NVIVO 12, with themes relevant to the research utilized as codes, giving a clear understanding over the buyer and seller purview on the themes of the research. The findings surfaced the value erosion caused due to the financially driven strategies originated from the transactional orientation of the existing business model. The theories adopted to construct the relationship oriented business model to rectify the value erosion taking place, based on sustainable value, value alignment and service offerings, were modified to incorporate ‘quality of trade’ to bridge the gap, leading towards the creation and delivery of sustainable value to the buyer-seller eco system of the industry

    It had been more than two decades passing by aftermath the devastating Asia’s Financial Crisis in 1997, subsequently followed by Suharto’s step down from his presidential throne which he occupied for more than three decades. The financial turmoil turned to a political disaster furthermore has led to massive looting that severely impacted Indonesians of Chinese descendant, including unresolved mystery of the most atrocious sexual violation against women and covert killings of students and democracy activists in this country. Since then, precisely aftermath May 1998, which publicly known as “Reformasi”1, Indonesia underwent political reform that eventually corresponded positively to its macroeconomic growth. Twenty years later, in 2018, Indonesia captured worldwide attention because it has successfully hosted two internationally renowned events, namely the Asian Games 2018 – the most prestigious sport events in Asia – conducted in Jakarta and Palembang; and the IMF/World Bank Annual Meeting 2018 in Bali. Particularly in the IMF/World Bank Annual Meeting, this event has significantly elevated Indonesia’s credibility and international prestige in the global economic powerplay as one of the nations with promising growth and openness. However, the narrative about poverty and inequality, including increasing racial tension, religious conservatism, and sexual violation against women are superseded by friendly climate for foreign investment and eventually excessive glorification of the nation’s economic growth. By portraying the image of promising new economic power, as rhetorically promised by President Joko Widodo during his presidential terms, Indonesia has swept the growing inequality in this highly stratified society that historically compounded with religious and racial tension under the carpet of digital economy.Arte y Humanidade

    Industry 4.0: product digital twins for remanufacturing decision-making

    Currently there is a desire to reduce natural resource consumption and expand circular business principles whilst Industry 4.0 (I4.0) is regarded as the evolutionary and potentially disruptive movement of technology, automation, digitalisation, and data manipulation into the industrial sector. The remanufacturing industry is recognised as being vital to the circular economy (CE) as it extends the in-use life of products, but its synergy with I4.0 has had little attention thus far. This thesis documents the first investigating into I4.0 in remanufacturing for a CE contributing a design and demonstration of a model that optimises remanufacturing planning using data from different instances in a product’s life cycle. The initial aim of this work was to identify the I4.0 technology that would enhance the stability in remanufacturing with a view to reducing resource consumption. As the project progressed it narrowed to focus on the development of a product digital twin (DT) model to support data-driven decision making for operations planning. The model’s architecture was derived using a bottom-up approach where requirements were extracted from the identified complications in production planning and control that differentiate remanufacturing from manufacturing. Simultaneously, the benefits of enabling visibility of an asset’s through-life health were obtained using a DT as the modus operandi. A product simulator and DT prototype was designed to use Internet of Things (IoT) components, a neural network for remaining life estimations and a search algorithm for operational planning optimisation. The DT was iteratively developed using case studies to validate and examine the real opportunities that exist in deploying a business model that harnesses, and commodifies, early life product data for end-of-life processing optimisation. Findings suggest that using intelligent programming networks and algorithms, a DT can enhance decision-making if it has visibility of the product and access to reliable remanufacturing process information, whilst existing IoT components provide rudimentary “smart” capabilities, but their integration is complex, and the durability of the systems over extended product life cycles needs to be further explored
