Construction of a VC1 interpolant over triangles via edge deletion
We present a construction of a visually smooth surface which interpolates to position values and normal vectors of randomly distributed points on a 3D object. The method is local and uses quartic triangular and bicubic quadrilateral patches without splits. It heavily relies on an edge deleting algorithm which, starting from a given triangulation, derives a suitable combination of three- and four sided patches
Finite element analysis enhanced with subdivision surface boundary representations
In this work we develop a design-through-analysis methodology by extending the concept of the NURBS-enhanced finite element method (NEFEM) to volumes bounded by Catmull-Clark subdivision surfaces. The representation of the boundary as a single watertight manifold facilitates the generation of an external curved triangular mesh, which is subsequently used to generate the interior volumetric mesh. Following the NEFEM framework, the basis functions are defined in the physical space and the numerical integration is realized with a special mapping which takes into account the exact definition of the boundary. Furthermore, an appropriate quadrature strategy is proposed to deal with the integration of elements adjacent to extraordinary vertices (EVs). Both theoretical and practical aspects of the implementation are discussed and are supported with numerical examples.</p

Smooth parametric surfaces and n-sided patches
The theory of 'geometric continuity' within the subject of CAGD is reviewed. In particular, we are concerned with how parametric surface patches for CAGD can be pieced together to form a smooth Ck surface. The theory is applied to the problem of filling an n-sided hole occurring within a smooth rectangular patch complex. A number of solutions to this problem are surveyed
Almost- splines: Biquadratic splines on unstructured quadrilateral meshes and their application to fourth order problems
Isogeometric Analysis generalizes classical finite element analysis and
intends to integrate it with the field of Computer-Aided Design. A central
problem in achieving this objective is the reconstruction of analysis-suitable
models from Computer-Aided Design models, which is in general a non-trivial and
time-consuming task. In this article, we present a novel spline construction,
that enables model reconstruction as well as simulation of high-order PDEs on
the reconstructed models. The proposed almost- are biquadratic splines on
fully unstructured quadrilateral meshes (without restrictions on placements or
number of extraordinary vertices). They are smooth almost everywhere,
that is, at all vertices and across most edges, and in addition almost (i.e.
approximately) smooth across all other edges. Thus, the splines form
-nonconforming analysis-suitable discretization spaces. This is the
lowest-degree unstructured spline construction that can be used to solve
fourth-order problems. The associated spline basis is non-singular and has
several B-spline-like properties (e.g., partition of unity, non-negativity,
local support), the almost- splines are described in an explicit
B\'ezier-extraction-based framework that can be easily implemented. Numerical
tests suggest that the basis is well-conditioned and exhibits optimal
approximation behavior
Conversion of trimmed NURBS surfaces to Catmull-Clark subdivision surfaces
This paper introduces a novel method to convert trimmed NURBS surfaces to untrimmed subdivision surfaces with Bézier edge conditions. We take a NURBS surface and its trimming curves as input, from this we automatically compute a base mesh, the limit surface of which fits the trimmed NURBS surface to a specified tolerance. We first construct the topology of the base mesh by performing a cross-field based decomposition in parameter space. The number and positions of extraordinary vertices required to represent the trimmed shape can be automatically identified by smoothing a cross field bounded by the parametric trimming curves. After the topology construction, the control point positions in the base mesh are calculated based on the limit stencils of the subdivision scheme and constraints to achieve tangential continuity across the boundary. Our method provides the user with either an editable base mesh or a fine mesh whose limit surface approximates the input within a certain tolerance. By integrating the trimming curve as part of the desired limit surface boundary, our conversion can produce gap-free models. Moreover, since we use tangential continuity across the boundary between adjacent surfaces as constraints, the converted surfaces join with G1 continuity. © 2014 The Authors.EPSRC, Chinese Government (PhD studentship) and Cambridge Trust
Representing rational curve segments and surface patches using semi-algebraic sets
We provide a framework for representing segments of rational planar curves or patches of rational tensor product surfaces with no singularities using semi-algebraic sets. Given a rational planar curve segment or a rational tensor product surface patch with no singularities, we find the implicit equation of the corresponding unbounded curve or surface and then construct an algebraic box defined by some additional equations and inequalities associated to the implicit equation. This algebraic box is proved to include only the given curve segment or surface patch without any extraneous parts of the unbounded curve or surface. We also explain why it is difficult to construct such an algebraic box if the curve segment or surface patch includes some singular points such as self-intersections. In this case, we show how to isolate a neighborhood of these special points from the corresponding curve segment or surface patch and to represent these special points with small curve segments or surface patches.
