    Animation in relational information visualization

    In order to be able to navigate in the world without memorizing each detail, the human brain builds a mental map of its environment. The mental map is a distorted and abstracted representation of the real environment. Unimportant areas tend to be collapsed to a single entity while important landmarks are overemphasized. When working with visualizations of data we build a mental map of the data which is closely linked to the particular visualization. If the visualization changes significantly due to changes in the data or the way it is presented we loose the mental map and have to rebuild it from scratch. The purpose of the research underlying this thesis was to investigate and devise methods to create smooth transformations between visualizations of relational data which help users in maintaining or quickly updating their mental map

    Automated analysis and visualization of preclinical whole-body microCT data

    In this thesis, several strategies are presented that aim to facilitate the analysis and visualization of whole-body in vivo data of small animals. Based on the particular challenges for image processing, when dealing with whole-body follow-up data, we addressed several aspects in this thesis. The developed methods are tailored to handle data of subjects with significantly varying posture and address the large tissue heterogeneity of entire animals. In addition, we aim to compensate for lacking tissue contrast by relying on approximation of organs based on an animal atlas.     Conceptual free-form styling in virtual environments

    This dissertation introduces the tools for designing complete models from scratch directly in a head-tracked, table-like virtual work environment. The models consist of free-form surfaces, and are constructed by drawing a network of curves directly in space. This is accomplished by using a tracked pen-like input device. Interactive deformation tools for curves and surfaces are proposed and are based on variational methods. By aligning the model with the left hand, editing is made possible with the right hand, corresponding to a natural distribution of tasks using both hands. Furthermore, in the emerging field of 3D interaction in virtual environments, particularly with regard to system control, this work uses novel methods to integrate system control tasks, such as selecting tools, and workflow of shape design. The aim of this work is to propose more suitable user interfaces to computersupported conceptual shape design applications. This would be beneficial since it is a field that lacks adequate support from standard desktop systems.Diese Dissertation beschreibtWerkzeuge zum Entwurf kompletter virtueller Modelle von Grund auf. Dies geschieht direkt in einer tischartigen, virtuellen Arbeitsumge-bung mit Hilfe von Tracking der Hände und der Kopfposition. Die Modelle sind aus Freiformlächen aufgebaut und werden als Netz von Kurven mit Hilfe eines getrack-ten, stiftartigen Eingabegerätes direkt im Raum gezeichnet. Es werden interaktive Deformationswerkzeuge für Kurven und Flächen vorgestellt, die auf Methoden des Variational Modeling basieren. Durch das Ausrichten des Modells mit der linken Hand wird das Editieren mit der rechten Hand erleichtert. Dies entspricht einer natürlichen Aufteilung von Aufgaben auf beide Hände. Zusätzlich stellt diese Arbeit neue Techniken für die 3D-Interaktion in virtuellen Umgebungen, insbesondere im Bereich Anwendungskontrolle, vor, die die Aufgabe der Werkzeugauswahl in den Arbeitsablauf der Formgestaltung integrieren.     3D human body modelling from range data

    This thesis describes the design, implementation and application of an integrated and fully automated system for interpreting whole-body range data. The system is shown to be capable of generating complete surface models of human bodies, and robustly extracting anatomical features for anthropometry, with minimal intrusion on the subject. The ability to automate this process has enormous potential for personalised digital models in medicine, ergonomics, design and manufacture and for populating virtual environments. The techniques developed within this thesis now form the basis of a commercial product. However, the technical difficulties are considerable. Human bodies are highly varied and many of the features of interest are extremely subtle. The underlying range data is typically noisy and is sparse at occluded areas. In addressing these problems this thesis makes five main research contributions. Firstly, the thesis describes the design, implementation and testing of the whole integrated and automated system from scratch, starting at the image capture hardware. At each stage the tradeoffs between performance criteria are discussed, and experiments are described to test the processes developed. Secondly, a combined data-driven and model-based approach is described and implemented, for surface reconstruction from the raw data. This method addresses the whole body surface, including areas where body segments touch, and other occluded areas. The third contribution is a library of operators, designed specifically for shape description and measurement of the human body. The library provides high-level relational attributes, an "electronic tape measure" to extract linear and curvilinear measurements,as well as low-level shape information, such as curvature. Application of the library is demonstrated by building a large set of detectors to find anthropometric features, based on the ISO 8559 specification. Output is compared against traditional manual measurements and a detailed analysis is presented. The discrepancy between these sets of data is only a few per cent on most dimensions, and the system's reproducibility is shown to be similar to that of skilled manual measurers. The final contribution is that the mesh models and anthropometric features, produced by the system, have been used as a starting point to facilitate other research, Such as registration of multiple body images,draping clothing and advanced surface modelling techniques
