    eCMT-SCTP: Improving Performance of Multipath SCTP with Erasure Coding Over Lossy Links

    Performance of transport protocols on lossy links is a well-researched topic, however there are only a few proposals making use of the opportunities of erasure coding within the multipath transport protocol context. In this paper, we investigate performance improvements of multipath CMT-SCTP with the novel integration of the on-the-fly erasure code within congestion control and reliability mechanisms. Our contributions include: integration of transport protocol and erasure codes with regards to congestion control; proposal for a variable retransmission delay parameter (aRTX) adjustment; performance evaluation of CMT-SCTP with erasure coding with simulations. We have implemented the explicit congestion notification (ECN) and erasure coding schemes in NS-2, evaluated and demonstrated results of improvement both for application goodput and decline of spurious retransmission. Our results show that we can achieve from 10% to 80% improvements in goodput under lossy network conditions without a significant penalty and minimal overhead due to the encoding-decoding process

    Optimized Packet Scheduling in Multiview Video Navigation Systems

    In multiview video systems, multiple cameras generally acquire the same scene from different perspectives, such that users have the possibility to select their preferred viewpoint. This results in large amounts of highly redundant data, which needs to be properly handled during encoding and transmission over resource-constrained channels. In this work, we study coding and transmission strategies in multicamera systems, where correlated sources send data through a bottleneck channel to a central server, which eventually transmits views to different interactive users. We propose a dynamic correlation-aware packet scheduling optimization under delay, bandwidth, and interactivity constraints. The optimization relies both on a novel rate-distortion model, which captures the importance of each view in the 3D scene reconstruction, and on an objective function that optimizes resources based on a client navigation model. The latter takes into account the distortion experienced by interactive clients as well as the distortion variations that might be observed by clients during multiview navigation. We solve the scheduling problem with a novel trellis-based solution, which permits to formally decompose the multivariate optimization problem thereby significantly reducing the computation complexity. Simulation results show the gain of the proposed algorithm compared to baseline scheduling policies. More in details, we show the gain offered by our dynamic scheduling policy compared to static camera allocation strategies and to schemes with constant coding strategies. Finally, we show that the best scheduling policy consistently adapts to the most likely user navigation path and that it minimizes distortion variations that can be very disturbing for users in traditional navigation systems

    Performance evaluation of High Definition video streaming over Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

    © 2018 Video Service Providers (VSPs) can collect and analyze an enormous amount of multimedia data from various cloud storage centers using real-time big data systems for supporting various online customers. The infrastructure-less nature of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) makes the video streaming a challenging task for VSPs. High packet-loss probability in MANETs can create a notable distortion in the received video quality. In this paper, High Definition (HD) videos are streamed over MANETs. First, a transmission model is designed followed by a distortion model to estimate network distortions, such as packet-loss rate and end-to-end delay. Based on the proposed models, a video streaming framework is designed to efficiently utilize the available bandwidth in MANETs, minimize the network distortions, and improve Quality of Service (QoS). Later, an Error Concealment (EC) technique is used to conceal the lost/dropped video frames to improve the Quality of Experience (QoE). Experimental results show that our proposed video streaming framework outperforms the state-of-the-art routing protocols designed for MANETs, such as Destination-Sequenced Distance Vector (DSDV) and Optimized Link Sate Routing (OLSR) protocols. In the end, both subjective and objective evaluations are performed to evaluate the perceptual quality of the concealed video data
