Multichannel quantum-defect theory for ultracold atom-ion collisions
We develop an analytical model for ultracold atom-ion collisions using the
multichannel quantum-defect formalism. The model is based on the analytical
solutions of the r^-4 long-range potential and on the application of a frame
transformation between asymptotic and molecular bases. This approach allows the
description of the atom-ion interaction in the ultracold domain in terms of
three parameters only: the singlet and triplet scattering lengths, assumed to
be independent of the relative motion angular momentum, and the lead dispersion
coefficient of the asymptotic potential. We also introduce corrections to the
scattering lengths that improve the accuracy of our quantum-defect model for
higher order partial waves, a particularly important result for an accurate
description of shape and Feshbach resonances at finite temperature. The theory
is applied to the system composed of a 40Ca+ ion and a Na atom, and compared to
numerical coupled-channel calculations carried out using ab initio potentials.
For this particular system, we investigate the spectrum of bound states, the
rate of charge-transfer processes, and the collision rates in the presence of
magnetic Feshbach resonances at zero and finite temperature.Comment: 39 pages, 21 figure
Electromagnetic Form Factors of the Nucleon and Compton Scattering
We review the experimental and theoretical status of elastic electron
scattering and elastic low-energy photon scattering (with both real and virtual
photons) from the nucleon. As a consequence of new experimental facilities and
new theoretical insights, these subjects are advancing with unprecedented
precision. These reactions provide many important insights into the spatial
distributions and correlations of quarks in the nucleon.Comment: 47 pages, 18 figures, includes corrections and updates to published

Emergence of the pointer basis through the dynamics of correlations
We use the classical correlation between a quantum system being measured and
its measurement apparatus to analyze the amount of information being retrieved
in a quantum measurement process. Accounting for decoherence of the apparatus,
we show that these correlations may have a sudden transition from a decay
regime to a constant level. This transition characterizes a non-asymptotic
emergence of the pointer basis, while the system-apparatus can still be quantum
correlated. We provide a formalization of the concept of emergence of a pointer
basis in an apparatus subject to decoherence. This contrast of the pointer
basis emergence to the quantum to classical transition is demonstrated in an
experiment with polarization entangled photon pairs.Comment: 4+2 pgs, 3 figures. Title changed. Revised version to appear on PR
The spin dependence of high energy proton scattering
Motivated by the need for an absolute polarimeter to determine the beam
polarization for the forthcoming RHIC spin program, we study the spin
dependence of the proton-proton elastic scattering amplitudes at high energy
and small momentum transfer. We examine experimental evidence for the existence
of an asymptotic part of the helicity-flip amplitude phi_5 which is not
negligible relative to the largely imaginary average non-flip amplitude phi_+.
We discuss theoretical estimates of r_5, essentially the ratio of phi_5 to
phi_+, based upon extrapolation of low and medium energy Regge phenomenological
results to high energies, models based on a hybrid of perturbative QCD and
non-relativistic quark models, and models based on eikonalization techniques.
We also apply the model-independent methods of analyticity and unitarity. The
preponderence of evidence at available energy indicates that r_5 is small,
probably less than 10%. The best available experimental limit comes from
Fermilab E704:those data indicate that |r_5|<15%. These bounds are important
because rigorous methods allow much larger values. In contradiction to a
widely-held prejudice that r_5 decreases with energy, general principles allow
it to grow as fast as ln(s) asymptotically, and some models show an even faster
growth in the RHIC range. One needs a more precise measurement of r_5 or to
bound it to be smaller than 5% in order to use the classical Coulomb-nuclear
interference technique for RHIC polarimetry. As part of this study, we
demonstrate the surprising result that proton-proton elastic scattering is
self-analysing, in the sense that all the helicity amplitudes can, in
principle, be determined experimentally at small momentum transfer without a
knowledge of the magnitude of the beam and target polarization
Interaction quench dynamics in the Kondo model in presence of a local magnetic field
In this work we investigate the quench dynamics in the Kondo model on the
Toulouse line in presence of a local magnetic field. It is shown that this
setup can be realized by either applying the local magnetic field directly or
by preparing the system in a macroscopically spin-polarized initial state. In
the latter case, the magnetic field results from a subtlety in applying the
bosonization technique where terms that are usually referred to as finite-size
corrections become important in the present non-equilibrium setting. The
transient dynamics is studied by analyzing exact analytical results for the
local spin dynamics. The time scale for the relaxation of the local dynamical
quantities turns out to be exclusively determined by the Kondo scale. In the
transient regime, one observes damped oscillations in the local correlation
functions with a frequency set by the magnetic field.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures; minor changes, version as publishe
Real and Virtual Compton Scattering off the Nucleon
A review is given of the very recent developments in the fields of real and
virtual Compton scattering off the nucleon. Both real and virtual Compton
scattering reactions are discussed at low outgoing photon energy where one
accesses polarizabilities of the nucleon. The real Compton scattering at large
momentum transfer is discussed which is asymptotically a tool to obtain
information on the valence quark wave function of the nucleon. The rapid
developments in deeply virtual Compton scattering and associated meson
electroproduction reactions at high energy, high photon virtuality and small
momentum transfer to the nucleon are discussed. A unified theoretical
description of those processes has emerged over the last few years, which gives
access to new, generalized parton distributions. The experimental status and
perspectives in these fields are also discussed.Comment: 25 pages, 17 figure
