OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) suffers from destruction of orthogonility if a channel betweenthe mobile user and a base station is rapidly time varying. This channel between the mobile user and a base station is called an Uplink-OFDMA. The OFDMA uplink resource allocation undergoes from Inter carrier interference (ICI), multiuser interference (MUI) if a nearby subcarrier is assigned to different user, high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) and high bit error rate (BER).This results in performance degradation. In order to provide a significant improvement in performance, a practical OFDMA system detection is required. The proposed system consists of a new sub-carrier allocation method using a successive interfer ence cancelation (SIC) detector at the receiver side. The proposed system is designed and simulated using MATLAB tool. Simulation results show that the proposed subcarrier allocation and ―Interleaved Aǁ allocation method has an average Bit errorprobability of 10 -0.5 and 10-0.2 respectively. Thus Average Bit error probability of around 32% is reduced compared to the ―Interleaved Aǁallocation method. Further, simulations also demonstrate a gradual decrease in MUI power from -15db to -20db for interleaved al location and subcarrier allocation method respectively

The demand for high speed reliable wireless services has been rapidly growing. Wireless networks have limited resources while wireless channels suffer from fading, interference and time variations. Furthermore, wireless applications have diverse end to end quality of service (QoS) requirements. The aforementioned challenges require the design of spectrally efficient transmission systems coupled with the collaboration of the different OSI layers i.e. cross layer design. To this end, we propose a code division multiple access (CDMA)-space frequency block coded (SFBC) systems for both uplink and downlink transmissions. The proposed systems exploit code, frequency and spatial diversities to improve reception. Furthermore, we derive closed form expressions for the average bit error rate of the proposed systems. In this thesis, we also propose a cross layer resource allocation algorithm for star CDMA-SFBC wireless networks. The proposed resource allocation algorithm assigns base transceiver stations (BTS), antenna arrays and frequency bands to users based on their locations such that their pair wise channel cross correlation is minimized while each user is assigned channels with maximum coherence time. The cooperation between the medium access control (MAC) and physical layers as applied by the optimized resource allocation algorithm improves the bit error rate of the users and the spectral efficiency of the network. A joint cross layer routing and resource allocation algorithm for multi radio CDMA-SFBC wireless mesh networks is also proposed in this thesis. The proposed cross layer algorithm assigns frequency bands to links to minimize the interference and channel estimation errors experienced by those links. Channel estimation errors are minimized by selecting channels with maximum coherence time. On top, the optimization algorithm routes network traffic such that the average end to end packet delay is minimized while avoiding links with high interference and short coherence time. The cooperation between physical, MAC and network layers as applied by the optimization algorithm provides noticeable improvements in average end to end packet delay and success rat

Cooperative schemes are promising solutions for cellular wireless networks aiming to improve system fairness, extend coverage and increase capacity. Measurements of these system performances are made in terms of BER and capacity for different configurations, by varying the number of relays and of antennas equipping each node. In this work we propose and evaluate distributed space-frequency codes applied to cooperative systems in a distributed way, with application in OFDM systems and considering realistic scenarios. Moreover, the use of relays is of significant interest to allow radio access in situations where a direct path is not available or has poor quality. Thus, a data precoded relay-assisted scheme is also proposed for a system cooperating with multiple relays, each equipped with either a single antenna or two-antenna array. Mathematical formulation of the proposed algorithms is derived as well as the pairwise error probability. We further present the performances of the proposed algorithms apllied in relay-assisted schemes, and compare them with equivalent cooperative and non-cooperative schemes, for several channel quality scenarios, through which important conclusions are achieved.FCT/FS

4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile system is the fourth generation communication system adopted worldwide to provide high-speed data connections and high-quality voice calls. Given the recent deployment by mobile service providers, unlike GSM and UMTS, LTE can be still considered to be in its early stages and therefore many topics still raise great interest among the international scientific research community: network performance assessment, network optimization, selective scheduling, interference management and coexistence with other communication systems in the unlicensed band, methods to evaluate human exposure to electromagnetic radiation are, as a matter of fact, still open issues. In this work techniques adopted to increase LTE radio performances are investigated. One of the most wide-spread solutions proposed by the standard is to implement MIMO techniques and within a few years, to overcome the scarcity of spectrum, LTE network operators will offload data traffic by accessing the unlicensed 5 GHz frequency. Our Research deals with an evaluation of 3GPP standard in a real test best scenario to evaluate network behavior and performance

Radio resource allocation algorithms for multicast OFDM systems

Mención Internacional en el título de doctorVideo services have become highly demanded in mobile networks leading to an unprecedented traffic growth. It is expected that traffic from wireless and mobile devices will account for nearly 70 percent of total IP traffic by the year 2020, and the video services will account for nearly 75 percent of mobile data traffic by 2022. Multicast transmission is one of the key enablers towards a more spectral and energy efficient distribution of multimedia content in current and envisaged mobile networks. It is worth noting that multicast is a mechanism that efficiently delivers the same content to many users, not only focusing on video broadcasting, but also distributing many other media, such as software updates, weather forecast or breaking news. Although multicast services are available in Long Term Evolution (LTE) and LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) networks, new improvements are needed in some areas to handle the demands expected in the near future. Resource allocation techniques for multicast services are one of the main challenging issues, since it is required the development of novel schemes to meet the demands of their evolution towards the next generation. Most multicast techniques adopt rather conservative strategies that select a very robust modulation and coding scheme (MCS), whose characteristics are determined by the propagation conditions experienced by the worst user in the group in order to ensure that all users in a multicast group are able to correctly decode the received data. Obviously, this robustness comes at the prize of a low spectral efficiency. This thesis presents an exhaustive study of broadcast/multicast technology for current mobile networks, especially focusing on the scheduling and resource allocation (SRA) strategies to maximize the potential benefits that multicast transmissions imply on the spectral efficiency. Based on that issue, some contributions have been made to the state of the art in the radio resource management (RRM) for current and beyond mobile multicast services. • In the frame of LTE/LTE-A, the evolved multimedia broadcast and multicast service (eMBMS) shares the physical layer resources with the unicast transmission mode (at least up to Release 12). Consequently, the time allocation to multicast transmission is limited to a maximum of a 60 percent, and the remaining subframes (at least 40 percent) are reserved for unicast transmissions. With the aim of achieving the maximum aggregated data rate (ADR) among the multicast users, we have implemented several innovative SRA schemes that combine the allocation of multicast and unicast resources in the LTE/LTE-A frame, guaranteeing the prescribed quality of service (QoS) requirements for every user. • In the specific context of wideband communication systems, the selection of the multicast MCS has often relied on the use of wideband channel quality indicators (CQIs), providing rather imprecise information regarding the potential capacity of the multicast channel. Only recently has the per-subband CQI been used to improve the spectral efficiency of the system without compromising the link robustness. We have proposed novel subband CQI-based multicast SRA strategies that, relying on the selection of more spectrally efficient transmission modes, lead to increased data rates while still being able to fulfill prescribed QoS metrics. • Mobile broadcast/multicast video services require effective and low complexity SRA strategies. We have proposed an SRA strategy based on multicast subgrouping and the scalable video coding (SVC) technique for multicast video delivery. This scheme focuses on reducing the search space of solutions and optimizes the ADR. The results in terms of ADR, spectral efficiency, and fairness among multicast users, along with the low complexity of the algorithm, show that this new scheme is adequate for real systems. These contributions are intended to serve as a reference that motivate ongoing and future investigation in the challenging field of RRM for broadcast/ multicast services in next generation mobile networks.

In wireless broadband communications, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been adopted as a promising technique to mitigate multi-path fading and provide high spectral efficiency. In addition, cooperative communication can explore spatial diversity where several users or nodes share their resources and cooperate through distributed transmission. The concatenation of the OFDM technique with relaying systems can enhance the overall performance in terms of spectral efficiency and improve robustness against the detrimental effects of fading. Hybrid relay selection is proposed to overcome the drawbacks of conventional forwarding schemes. However, exciting hybrid relay protocols may suffer some limitations when used for transmission over frequency-selective channels. The combination of cooperative protocols with OFDM systems has been extensively utilized in current wireless networks, and have become a promising solution for future high data rate broadband communication systems including 3D video transmission. This thesis covers two areas of high data rate networks. In the first part, several techniques using cooperative OFDM systems are presented including relay selection, space time block codes, resource allocation and adaptive bit and power allocation to introduce diversity. Four (4) selective OFDM relaying schemes are studied over wireless networks; selective OFDM; selective OFDMA; selective block OFDM and selective unequal block OFDM. The closed-form expression of these schemes is derived. By exploiting the broadcast nature, it is demonstrated that spatial diversity can be improved. The upper bound of outage probability for the protocols is derived. A new strategy for hybrid relay selection is proposed to improve the system performance by removing the sub-carriers that experience deep fading. The per subcarrier basis selection is considered with respect to the predefined threshold signal-to-noise ratio. The closed-form expressions of the proposed protocol in terms of bit error probability and outage probability are derived and compared with conventional hybrid relay selection. Adaptive bit and power allocation is also discussed to improve the system performance. Distributed space frequency coding applied to hybrid relay selection to obtain full spatial and full data rate transmission is explored. Two strategies, single cluster and multiple clusters, are considered for the Alamouti code at the destination by using a hybrid relay protocol. The power allocation with and without sub-carrier pairing is also investigated to mitigate the effect of multipath error propagation in frequency-selective channels. The second part of this thesis investigates the application of cooperative OFDM systems to high data rate transmission. Recently, there has been growing attention paid to 3D video transmission over broadband wireless channels. Two strategies for relay selection hybrid relay selection and first best second best are proposed to implement unequal error protection in the physical layer over error prone channels. The closed-form expressions of bit error probability and outage probability for both strategies are examined. The peak signal-to-noise ratio is presented to show the quality of reconstruction of the left and right views
