    Assurance Benefits of ISO 26262 compliant Microcontrollers for safety-critical Avionics

    The usage of complex Microcontroller Units (MCUs) in avionic systems constitutes a challenge in assuring their safety. They are not developed according to the development requirements accepted by the aerospace industry. These Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware components usually target other domains like the telecommunication branch. In the last years MCUs developed in compliance to the ISO 26262 have been released on the market for safety-related automotive applications. The avionic assurance process could profit from these safety MCUs.     Applying Model Based Techniques for Early Safety Evaluation of an Automotive Architecture in Compliance with the ISO 26262 Standard

    International audienceIn 2011, the automotive industry introduced the application of a standardized process for functional safety-related development of automotive electronic products. The related international standard, ISO 26262 functional safety for road vehicles, has high demands on process documentation and analysis. Within an engineering context this challenges the tremendous increase of complexity for modern automotive systems and high productivity demands for industrial competiveness purpose. Model based development techniques based on an Architecture Description Language (ADL) has been identified as the best candidate to manage the system complexity and the related safety analysis with the benefit of formal description and capabilities for test automation. The proposed concept relies on the definition of a compositional error modeling approach tightly coupled with the system architecture model, capable to analyze the software and hardware architectures and implementations. This paper explains the results of the language extension based on the EAST-ADL and AUTOSAR domain model in terms of early safety evaluation of an automotive architecture, automating the qualitative and quantitative assessment of road vehicle products as claimed by the application of the ISO 26262

    Formal verification of automotive embedded UML designs

    Software applications are increasingly dominating safety critical domains. Safety critical domains are domains where the failure of any application could impact human lives. Software application safety has been overlooked for quite some time but more focus and attention is currently directed to this area due to the exponential growth of software embedded applications. Software systems have continuously faced challenges in managing complexity associated with functional growth, flexibility of systems so that they can be easily modified, scalability of solutions across several product lines, quality and reliability of systems, and finally the ability to detect defects early in design phases. AUTOSAR was established to develop open standards to address these challenges. ISO-26262, automotive functional safety standard, aims to ensure functional safety of automotive systems by providing requirements and processes to govern software lifecycle to ensure safety. Each functional system needs to be classified in terms of safety goals, risks and Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL: A, B, C and D) with ASIL D denoting the most stringent safety level. As risk of the system increases, ASIL level increases and the standard mandates more stringent methods to ensure safety. ISO-26262 mandates that ASILs C and D classified systems utilize walkthrough, semi-formal verification, inspection, control flow analysis, data flow analysis, static code analysis and semantic code analysis techniques to verify software unit design and implementation. Ensuring software specification compliance via formal methods has remained an academic endeavor for quite some time. Several factors discourage formal methods adoption in the industry. One major factor is the complexity of using formal methods. Software specification compliance in automotive remains in the bulk heavily dependent on traceability matrix, human based reviews, and testing activities conducted on either actual production software level or simulation level. ISO26262 automotive safety standard recommends, although not strongly, using formal notations in automotive systems that exhibit high risk in case of failure yet the industry still heavily relies on semi-formal notations such as UML. The use of semi-formal notations makes specification compliance still heavily dependent on manual processes and testing efforts. In this research, we propose a framework where UML finite state machines are compiled into formal notations, specification requirements are mapped into formal model theorems and SAT/SMT solvers are utilized to validate implementation compliance to specification. The framework will allow semi-formal verification of AUTOSAR UML designs via an automated formal framework backbone. This semi-formal verification framework will allow automotive software to comply with ISO-26262 ASIL C and D unit design and implementation formal verification guideline. Semi-formal UML finite state machines are automatically compiled into formal notations based on Symbolic Analysis Laboratory formal notation. Requirements are captured in the UML design and compiled automatically into theorems. Model Checkers are run against the compiled formal model and theorems to detect counterexamples that violate the requirements in the UML model. Semi-formal verification of the design allows us to uncover issues that were previously detected in testing and production stages. The methodology is applied on several automotive systems to show how the framework automates the verification of UML based designs, the de-facto standard for automotive systems design, based on an implicit formal methodology while hiding the cons that discouraged the industry from using it. Additionally, the framework automates ISO-26262 system design verification guideline which would otherwise be verified via human error prone approaches

    Automotive Mechatronic Safety Argument Framework

    A modern vehicle uses mechanical components under software control, referred to as mechatronic systems, to deliver its features. The software for these, and its supporting hardware, are typically developed according to the functional safety standard ISO 26262:2011. This standard requires that a safety argument is created that demonstrates that the safety requirements for an item are complete and satisfied by evidence. However, this argument only addresses the software and electronic hardware aspects of the mechatronic system, although safety requirements derived for these can also be allocated to the mechanical part of the mechatronic system. The safety requirements allocated to hardware and software also have a value of integrity assigned to them based on an assessment of the unmitigated risk. The concept of risk and integrity is expressed differently in the development of the mechanical components. In this thesis, we address the challenge of extending the safety argument required by ISO 26262 to include the mechanical components being controlled, so creating a safety argument pattern that encompasses the complete mechatronic system. The approach is based on a generic model for engineering which can be applied to the development of the hardware, software and mechanical components. From this, a safety argument pattern has been derived which consequently can be applied to all three engineering disciplines of the mechatronic system. The harmonisation of the concept of integrity is addressed through the use of special characteristics. The result is a model-based assurance approach which allows an argument to be constructed for the mitigation of risk associated with a mechatronic system that encompasses the three engineering disciplines of the system. This approach is evaluated through interview-based case studies and the retrospective application of the approach to an existing four corner air suspension system

    Scalable allocation of safety integrity levels in automotive systems

    The allocation of safety integrity requirements is an important problem in modern safety engineering. It is necessary to find an allocation that meets system level safety integrity targets and that is simultaneously cost-effective. As safety-critical systems grow in size and complexity, the problem becomes too difficult to be solved in the context of a manual process. Although this thesis addresses the generic problem of safety integrity requirements allocation, the automotive industry is taken as an application example.Recently, the problem has been partially addressed with the use of model-based safety analysis techniques and exact optimisation methods. However, usually, allocation cost impacts are either not directly taken into account or simple, linear cost models are considered; furthermore, given the combinatorial nature of the problem, applicability of the exact techniques to large problems is not a given. This thesis argues that it is possible to effectively and relatively efficiently solve the allocation problem using a mixture of model-based safety analysis and metaheuristic optimisation techniques. Since suitable model-based safety analysis techniques were already known at the start of this project (e.g. HiP-HOPS), the research focuses on the optimisation task.The thesis reviews the process of safety integrity requirements allocation and presents relevant related work. Then, the state-of-the-art of metaheuristic optimisation is analysed and a series of techniques, based on Genetic Algorithms, the Particle Swarm Optimiser and Tabu Search are developed. These techniques are applied to a set of problems based on complex engineering systems considering the use of different cost functions. The most promising method is selected for investigation of performance improvements and usability enhancements. Overall, the results show the feasibility of the approach and suggest good scalability whilst also pointing towards areas for improvement

    Quantification of plausibility cross-checks in safety related control system architecture design for automotive applications

    When designing safety critical systems for automotive applications it is imperative that the chosen architecture can fulfil the designated safety goals. One significant aspect of this is proving architectural metrics are satisfied. The method developed in this thesis demonstrates, very early in the design process, that a system architecture can be systematically described and analysed to show that the final architectural metric targets for functional safety will be met. The system architecture model proposed can be used to explain a very complex system to other engineers / managers in an easily understood concept diagram, specifically tailored to examine the achievable diagnostic coverage of potential failures in the electrical /electronic system. Once the first architectural model is established, the method analyses architectural metrics in a quantified way, identifies potential weak areas and guides the designer towards additional Plausibility Cross-checks, or, in some cases, completely different architectures to improve the architectural metrics. The metrics can be calculated very quickly in comparison to the level of detail required for the final design. This permits quantified analysis of each candidate architecture allowing an informed decision to be made on which architecture to take through to the final design process. Often, multiple solutions will meet functional requirements, however, only a subset will meet functional safety requirements. The necessity to build safety into products has always been an important aspect of overall system design. This method allows decisions based on justifiable data, early in a project timeline to influence design decisions and ensure that concepts are correct. As demonstrated through examples this is achieved with a high level of confidence
