    The Metaverse: Survey, Trends, Novel Pipeline Ecosystem & Future Directions

    The Metaverse offers a second world beyond reality, where boundaries are non-existent, and possibilities are endless through engagement and immersive experiences using the virtual reality (VR) technology. Many disciplines can benefit from the advancement of the Metaverse when accurately developed, including the fields of technology, gaming, education, art, and culture. Nevertheless, developing the Metaverse environment to its full potential is an ambiguous task that needs proper guidance and directions. Existing surveys on the Metaverse focus only on a specific aspect and discipline of the Metaverse and lack a holistic view of the entire process. To this end, a more holistic, multi-disciplinary, in-depth, and academic and industry-oriented review is required to provide a thorough study of the Metaverse development pipeline. To address these issues, we present in this survey a novel multi-layered pipeline ecosystem composed of (1) the Metaverse computing, networking, communications and hardware infrastructure, (2) environment digitization, and (3) user interactions. For every layer, we discuss the components that detail the steps of its development. Also, for each of these components, we examine the impact of a set of enabling technologies and empowering domains (e.g., Artificial Intelligence, Security & Privacy, Blockchain, Business, Ethics, and Social) on its advancement. In addition, we explain the importance of these technologies to support decentralization, interoperability, user experiences, interactions, and monetization. Our presented study highlights the existing challenges for each component, followed by research directions and potential solutions. To the best of our knowledge, this survey is the most comprehensive and allows users, scholars, and entrepreneurs to get an in-depth understanding of the Metaverse ecosystem to find their opportunities and potentials for contribution

    A Design Science Research Approach to Smart and Collaborative Urban Supply Networks

    Urban supply networks are facing increasing demands and challenges and thus constitute a relevant field for research and practical development. Supply chain management holds enormous potential and relevance for society and everyday life as the flow of goods and information are important economic functions. Being a heterogeneous field, the literature base of supply chain management research is difficult to manage and navigate. Disruptive digital technologies and the implementation of cross-network information analysis and sharing drive the need for new organisational and technological approaches. Practical issues are manifold and include mega trends such as digital transformation, urbanisation, and environmental awareness. A promising approach to solving these problems is the realisation of smart and collaborative supply networks. The growth of artificial intelligence applications in recent years has led to a wide range of applications in a variety of domains. However, the potential of artificial intelligence utilisation in supply chain management has not yet been fully exploited. Similarly, value creation increasingly takes place in networked value creation cycles that have become continuously more collaborative, complex, and dynamic as interactions in business processes involving information technologies have become more intense. Following a design science research approach this cumulative thesis comprises the development and discussion of four artefacts for the analysis and advancement of smart and collaborative urban supply networks. This thesis aims to highlight the potential of artificial intelligence-based supply networks, to advance data-driven inter-organisational collaboration, and to improve last mile supply network sustainability. Based on thorough machine learning and systematic literature reviews, reference and system dynamics modelling, simulation, and qualitative empirical research, the artefacts provide a valuable contribution to research and practice

    Corporate Social Responsibility: the institutionalization of ESG

    Understanding the impact of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on firm performance as it relates to industries reliant on technological innovation is a complex and perpetually evolving challenge. To thoroughly investigate this topic, this dissertation will adopt an economics-based structure to address three primary hypotheses. This structure allows for each hypothesis to essentially be a standalone empirical paper, unified by an overall analysis of the nature of impact that ESG has on firm performance. The first hypothesis explores the evolution of CSR to the modern quantified iteration of ESG has led to the institutionalization and standardization of the CSR concept. The second hypothesis fills gaps in existing literature testing the relationship between firm performance and ESG by finding that the relationship is significantly positive in long-term, strategic metrics (ROA and ROIC) and that there is no correlation in short-term metrics (ROE and ROS). Finally, the third hypothesis states that if a firm has a long-term strategic ESG plan, as proxied by the publication of CSR reports, then it is more resilience to damage from controversies. This is supported by the finding that pro-ESG firms consistently fared better than their counterparts in both financial and ESG performance, even in the event of a controversy. However, firms with consistent reporting are also held to a higher standard than their nonreporting peers, suggesting a higher risk and higher reward dynamic. These findings support the theory of good management, in that long-term strategic planning is both immediately economically beneficial and serves as a means of risk management and social impact mitigation. Overall, this contributes to the literature by fillings gaps in the nature of impact that ESG has on firm performance, particularly from a management perspective

    Subsidiary Entrepreneurial Alertness: Antecedents and Outcomes

    This thesis brings together concepts from both international business and entrepreneurship to develop a framework of the facilitators of subsidiary innovation and performance. This study proposes that Subsidiary Entrepreneurial Alertness (SEA) facilitates the recognition of opportunities (the origin of subsidiary initiatives). First introduced by Kirzner (1979) in the context of the individual, entrepreneurial alertness (EA) is the ability to notice an opportunity without actively searching. Similarly, to entrepreneurial alertness at the individual level, this study argues that SEA enables the subsidiary to best select opportunities based on resources available. The research further develops our conceptualisation of SEA by drawing on work by Tang et al. (2012) identifying three distinct activities of EA: scanning and search (identifying opportunities unseen by others due to their awareness gaps), association and connection of information, and evaluation and judgement to interpret or anticipate future viability of opportunities. This study then hypothesises that SEA leads to opportunity recognition at the subsidiary level and further hypothesises innovation and performance as outcomes of opportunity recognition. This research brings these arguments together to develop and test a comprehensive theoretical model. The theoretical model is tested through a mail survey of the CEOs/MDs of foreign subsidiaries within the Republic of Ireland (an innovative hub for foreign subsidiaries). This method was selected as the best method to reach the targeted respondent, and due to the depth of knowledge the target respondent holds, the survey can answer the desired question more substantially. The results were examined using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). The study’s findings confirm two critical aspects of subsidiary context, subsidiary brokerage and subsidiary credibility are positively related to SEA. The study establishes a positive link between SEA and both the generation of innovation and the subsidiary’s performance. This thesis makes three significant contributions to the subsidiary literature as it 1) introduces and develops the concept of SEA, 2) identifies the antecedents of SEA, and 3) demonstrates the impact of SEA on subsidiary opportunity recognition. Implications for subsidiaries, headquarters and policy makers are discussed along with the limitations of the study

    Educating Sub-Saharan Africa:Assessing Mobile Application Use in a Higher Learning Engineering Programme

    In the institution where I teach, insufficient laboratory equipment for engineering education pushed students to learn via mobile phones or devices. Using mobile technologies to learn and practice is not the issue, but the more important question lies in finding out where and how they use mobile tools for learning. Through the lens of Kearney et al.’s (2012) pedagogical model, using authenticity, personalisation, and collaboration as constructs, this case study adopts a mixed-method approach to investigate the mobile learning activities of students and find out their experiences of what works and what does not work. Four questions are borne out of the over-arching research question, ‘How do students studying at a University in Nigeria perceive mobile learning in electrical and electronic engineering education?’ The first three questions are answered from qualitative, interview data analysed using thematic analysis. The fourth question investigates their collaborations on two mobile social networks using social network and message analysis. The study found how students’ mobile learning relates to the real-world practice of engineering and explained ways of adapting and overcoming the mobile tools’ limitations, and the nature of the collaborations that the students adopted, naturally, when they learn in mobile social networks. It found that mobile engineering learning can be possibly located in an offline mobile zone. It also demonstrates that investigating the effectiveness of mobile learning in the mobile social environment is possible by examining users’ interactions. The study shows how mobile learning personalisation that leads to impactful engineering learning can be achieved. The study shows how to manage most interface and technical challenges associated with mobile engineering learning and provides a new guide for educators on where and how mobile learning can be harnessed. And it revealed how engineering education can be successfully implemented through mobile tools

    From wallet to mobile: exploring how mobile payments create customer value in the service experience

    This study explores how mobile proximity payments (MPP) (e.g., Apple Pay) create customer value in the service experience compared to traditional payment methods (e.g. cash and card). The main objectives were firstly to understand how customer value manifests as an outcome in the MPP service experience, and secondly to understand how the customer activities in the process of using MPP create customer value. To achieve these objectives a conceptual framework is built upon the Grönroos-Voima Value Model (Grönroos and Voima, 2013), and uses the Theory of Consumption Value (Sheth et al., 1991) to determine the customer value constructs for MPP, which is complimented with Script theory (Abelson, 1981) to determine the value creating activities the consumer does in the process of paying with MPP. The study uses a sequential exploratory mixed methods design, wherein the first qualitative stage uses two methods, self-observations (n=200) and semi-structured interviews (n=18). The subsequent second quantitative stage uses an online survey (n=441) and Structural Equation Modelling analysis to further examine the relationships and effect between the value creating activities and customer value constructs identified in stage one. The academic contributions include the development of a model of mobile payment services value creation in the service experience, introducing the concept of in-use barriers which occur after adoption and constrains the consumers existing use of MPP, and revealing the importance of the mobile in-hand momentary condition as an antecedent state. Additionally, the customer value perspective of this thesis demonstrates an alternative to the dominant Information Technology approaches to researching mobile payments and broadens the view of technology from purely an object a user interacts with to an object that is immersed in consumers’ daily life

    OberflĂ€chenemittierende Laser mit vertikaler KavitĂ€t (VCSELs) und VCSEL-Arrays fĂŒr Kommunikation und Sensorik

    Future generations of optical wireless communication and sensing systems require compact, low-cost, reliable, and highly efficient light sources capable of transmitting modulated beams across free space at gigabit per second (Gbps) data rates and pulsed beams with sub-nanosecond rise and fall times. The infrared vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) is exactly one such light source. Fifth generation (5G) systems promise to connect billions of people and trillions of Internet of Things gadgets and sensors at 1 to beyond 20 Gbps via newly auctioned millimeter wave (30 GHz to 300 GHz) spectral bands. By circa 2030 sixth generation (6G) systems envision vast broadband capacity with zero latency – enabling real-time virtual and mixed realities, human-machine interfaces, autonomous vehicles, and much more. The 6G technology adds terahertz wave emitters including infrared VCSELs and VCSEL arrays to vastly increase data rates, boost energy and spectral efficiency, and take advantage of available and unregulated spectral bands. I design, fabricate, and test new experimental VCSEL diodes and novel two-dimensional (2D) VCSEL diode arrays. I study the physics and performance trade-offs of VCSEL light emitters aimed at 5G and 6G optical wireless communication and sensing applications. Via in-house computer modeling and simulation programs, I design VCSEL epitaxial structures – composed of nanometer-thick aluminum-gallium-arsenide, indium-gallium arsenide, and gallium-arsenide-phosphide layers – with peak target emission wavelengths of 940 and 980 nanometers. A commercial foundry grows my experimental VCSEL epitaxial wafers by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy on 3-inch diameter gallium-arsenide substrates. In my university cleanroom, I fabricate my VCSELs as quarter wafer test pieces using a new VCSEL Array 2018 mask set which contains single VCSELs, and several variations of novel 2D electrically parallel triple (3-element), septuple (7-element), and novemdecuple (19-element) geometric device designs. My fabricated devices feature high frequency, coplanar ground-signal-ground metal contact pads, and top-epitaxial-surface emission. I perform all device tests in my university laser diode laboratory via direct, on-wafer electrical probing under computer control, starting with continuous wave light output power-current-voltage sweeps via a calibrated photodiode-integrating sphere and variable current source. For emission spectra and small-signal frequency response measurements, I collect the emitted VCSEL light with a standard OM1 multiple mode optical fiber (MMF) – connected to either an optical spectrum analyzer or a photoreceiver. For on-wafer data transmission tests across OM1 MMF patch cords, I modulate my VCSELs with nonreturn to zero, pseudorandom bit patterns in the form of 2-level pulse amplitude modulation. I achieve record combinations of optical output power, bandwidth, and efficiency for my large oxide aperture diameter (larger than 20 micrometers) VCSELs and for my VCSEL arrays. For example, I demonstrate 200 milliwatts of optical output power, a bandwidth of 18 GHz, and a wall plug efficiency of 35 percent with a 19-element VCSEL array. I set several records for error free data transmission, for example, 40 Gbps for my triple and septuple VCSEL arrays and 25 Gbps for my novemdecuple VCSEL arrays, well beyond the previous record of 10 Gbps. Über hauseigene Computermodellierungs- und Simulationsprogramme wurden epitaktische VCSEL-Strukturen – bestehend aus nanometerdicken Aluminium-Gallium-Arsenid-, Indium-Gallium-Arsenid- und Gallium-Arsenid-Phosphid-Schichten – mit Peak-ZielemissionswellenlĂ€ngen von 940 und 980 Nanometern entworfen. Ein kommerzieller Hersteller hat die experimentellen VCSEL-Epitaxiewafer durch metallorganische Gasphasenepitaxie auf Gallium-Arsenid-Substraten mit einem Durchmesser von 3 Zoll gewachsen. In einem Reinraum an der UniversitĂ€t wurden die VCSELs als Viertelwafer-TeststĂŒcke mit einem neuen VCSEL Array 2018-Maskensatz gefertigt, der einzelne VCSELs und mehrere Variationen von neuartigen elektrisch parallelen 2D-Tripel- (3-Element), Septuple- (7-Element) und Novemdecuple- (19-Elemente) Strukturdesigns enthĂ€lt. Bei den prozessierten Strukturen handelt es sich um Top-Emitter mit hochfrequenzkompatiblen koplanare Masse-Signal-Masse-Metallkontaktpads. Alle Device-Tests wurden computergesteuert in einem universitĂ€ren Laserdiodenlabor durch direktes elektrisches On-Wafer Probing durchgefĂŒhrt, beginnend mit Dauerstrich-Lichtausgangsleistung-Strom-Spannungs-Sweeps ĂŒber eine kalibrierte Photodioden-Integrationskugel und eine variable Stromquelle. FĂŒr Emissionsspektren und Kleinsignal-Frequenzgangmessungen wurde das emittierte VCSEL-Licht mit einer standardmĂ€ĂŸigen OM1-Multimode-Glasfaser (MMF) eingesammelt – verbunden mit einem optischen Spektrumanalysator oder einem FotoempfĂ€nger. In dieser Arbeit werden bisher unerreichte Kombinationen von optischer Ausgangsleistung, Bandbreite und Effizienz fĂŒr VCSEL und VCSEL-Arrays mit großer Oxid-Apertur (grĂ¶ĂŸer als 20 Mikrometer) demonstriert. Beispielsweise werden 200 Milliwatt optische Ausgangsleistung, eine Bandbreite von 18 GHz und eine Konversionseffizienz elektrischer zu optischer Leistung von 35 Prozent mit einem 19-Element-VCSEL-Array erreicht. Zudem werden mehrere Rekorde fĂŒr fehlerfreie DatenĂŒbertragung aufgestellt, zum Beispiel 40 Gbps fĂŒr Triple- und Septuple-VCSEL-Arrays und 25 Gbps fĂŒr Novemdecuple-VCSEL-Arrays, weit ĂŒber den bisherigen Stand der Technik von 10 Gbps hinaus.     The theme for the events was "The Future of Work and Digital Skills". The 4IR caused a hollowing out of middle-income jobs (Frey & Osborne, 2017) but COVID-19 exposed the digital gap as survival depended mainly on digital infrastructure and connectivity. Almost overnight, organizations that had not invested in a digital strategy suddenly realized the need for such a strategy and the associated digital skills. The effects have been profound for those who struggled to adapt, while those who stepped up have reaped quite the reward.Therefore, there are no longer certainties about what the world will look like in a few years from now. However, there are certain ways to anticipate the changes that are occurring and plan on how to continually adapt to an increasingly changing world. Certain jobs will soon be lost and will not come back; other new jobs will however be created. Using data science and other predictive sciences, it is possible to anticipate, to the extent possible, the rate at which certain jobs will be replaced and new jobs created in different industries.
