A Taxonomy of Workflow Management Systems for Grid Computing
With the advent of Grid and application technologies, scientists and
engineers are building more and more complex applications to manage and process
large data sets, and execute scientific experiments on distributed resources.
Such application scenarios require means for composing and executing complex
workflows. Therefore, many efforts have been made towards the development of
workflow management systems for Grid computing. In this paper, we propose a
taxonomy that characterizes and classifies various approaches for building and
executing workflows on Grids. We also survey several representative Grid
workflow systems developed by various projects world-wide to demonstrate the
comprehensiveness of the taxonomy. The taxonomy not only highlights the design
and engineering similarities and differences of state-of-the-art in Grid
workflow systems, but also identifies the areas that need further research.Comment: 29 pages, 15 figure
Optimal advertising campaign generation for multiple brands using MOGA
The paper proposes a new modified multiobjective
genetic algorithm (MOGA) for the problem of optimal television (TV) advertising campaign generation for multiple brands. This NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem with numerous constraints is one of the key issues for an advertising agency when producing the optimal TV mediaplan. The classical approach to the solution of this problem is the greedy heuristic, which relies on the strength of the preceding commercial breaks when selecting
the next break to add to the campaign. While the greedy heuristic is capable of generating only a group of solutions that are closely related in the objective space, the proposed modified MOGA produces a Pareto-optimal set of chromosomes that: 1) outperform the greedy heuristic and 2) let the mediaplanner choose from a variety of uniformly distributed tradeoff solutions. To achieve these
results, the special problem-specific solution encoding, genetic operators, and original local optimization routine were developed for the algorithm. These techniques allow the algorithm to manipulate with only feasible individuals, thus, significantly improving its performance that is complicated by the problem constraints. The efficiency of the developed optimization method is verified using
the real data sets from the Canadian advertising industry
Hierarchical Dynamic Loop Self-Scheduling on Distributed-Memory Systems Using an MPI+MPI Approach
Computationally-intensive loops are the primary source of parallelism in
scientific applications. Such loops are often irregular and a balanced
execution of their loop iterations is critical for achieving high performance.
However, several factors may lead to an imbalanced load execution, such as
problem characteristics, algorithmic, and systemic variations. Dynamic loop
self-scheduling (DLS) techniques are devised to mitigate these factors, and
consequently, improve application performance. On distributed-memory systems,
DLS techniques can be implemented using a hierarchical master-worker execution
model and are, therefore, called hierarchical DLS techniques. These techniques
self-schedule loop iterations at two levels of hardware parallelism: across and
within compute nodes. Hybrid programming approaches that combine the message
passing interface (MPI) with open multi-processing (OpenMP) dominate the
implementation of hierarchical DLS techniques. The MPI-3 standard includes the
feature of sharing memory regions among MPI processes. This feature introduced
the MPI+MPI approach that simplifies the implementation of parallel scientific
applications. The present work designs and implements hierarchical DLS
techniques by exploiting the MPI+MPI approach. Four well-known DLS techniques
are considered in the evaluation proposed herein. The results indicate certain
performance advantages of the proposed approach compared to the hybrid
MPI+OpenMP approach
Population extremal optimisation for discrete multi-objective optimisation problems
The power to solve intractable optimisation problems is often found through population based evolutionary methods. These include, but are not limited to, genetic algorithms, particle swarm optimisation, differential evolution and ant colony optimisation. While showing much promise as an effective optimiser, extremal optimisation uses only a single solution in its canonical form – and there are no standard population mechanics. In this paper, two population models for extremal optimisation are proposed and applied to a multi-objective version of the generalised assignment problem. These models use novel intervention/interaction strategies as well as collective memory in order to allow individual population members to work together. Additionally, a general non-dominated local search algorithm is developed and tested. Overall, the results show that improved attainment surfaces can be produced using population based interactions over not using them. The new EO approach is also shown to be highly competitive with an implementation of NSGA-II.No Full Tex
