Implementation of Rank Based Sleep Scheduling (RBSS) Protocol for WSNs in a Fixed Grid Topology
AbstractOne of the most significant challenges in wide-scale Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is to achieve energy efficiency in order to increase their lifetime and ensuring responsiveness. A very widely applied approach in this regard is to overload the region with numerous low-cost sensing devices that can communicate with each other wirelessly and coordinate amongst themselves in developing schedules for being asleep or active. The literature has numerous research works in this regard which aim to develop efficient sleep scheduling schemes. In this paper, we present an implementation of a grid-topology based cooperative Rank Based Sleep Scheduling (RBSS) protocol in which the nodes of every cell coordinate in a distributive manner, the decision making process of selecting the nodes that should stay active, while others sleep. The proposed protocol guarantees the WSN connectivity as well as the required coverage. Finally, we implement RBSS on a small scale grid using TelosB motes
Quantifying Potential Energy Efficiency Gain in Green Cellular Wireless Networks
Conventional cellular wireless networks were designed with the purpose of
providing high throughput for the user and high capacity for the service
provider, without any provisions of energy efficiency. As a result, these
networks have an enormous Carbon footprint. In this paper, we describe the
sources of the inefficiencies in such networks. First we present results of the
studies on how much Carbon footprint such networks generate. We also discuss
how much more mobile traffic is expected to increase so that this Carbon
footprint will even increase tremendously more. We then discuss specific
sources of inefficiency and potential sources of improvement at the physical
layer as well as at higher layers of the communication protocol hierarchy. In
particular, considering that most of the energy inefficiency in cellular
wireless networks is at the base stations, we discuss multi-tier networks and
point to the potential of exploiting mobility patterns in order to use base
station energy judiciously. We then investigate potential methods to reduce
this inefficiency and quantify their individual contributions. By a
consideration of the combination of all potential gains, we conclude that an
improvement in energy consumption in cellular wireless networks by two orders
of magnitude, or even more, is possible.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1210.843
Estimating distances via connectivity in wireless sensor networks
Distance estimation is vital for localization and many other applications in wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we develop a method that employs a maximum-likelihood estimator to estimate distances between a pair of neighboring nodes in a static wireless sensor network using their local connectivity information, namely the numbers of their common and non-common one-hop neighbors. We present the distance estimation method under a generic channel model, including the unit disk (communication) model and the more realistic log-normal (shadowing) model as special cases. Under the log-normal model, we investigate the impact of the log-normal model uncertainty; we numerically evaluate the bias and standard deviation associated with our method, which show that for long distances our method outperforms the method based on received signal strength; and we provide a Cramér-Rao lower bound analysis for the problem of estimating distances via connectivity and derive helpful guidelines for implementing our method. Finally, on implementing the proposed method on the basis of measurement data from a realistic environment and applying it in connectivity-based sensor localization, the advantages of the proposed method are confirmed. Energy-efficient query management scheme for a wireless sensor database system
Minimizing the communication overhead to reduce the energy consumption is an essential consideration in sensor network applications, and existing research has mostly concentrated on data aggregation and in-network processing. However, effective query management to optimize the query aggregation plan at the gateway side is also a significant approach to energy saving in practice. In this paper, we present a multiquery management framework to support historical and continuous queries, where the key idea is to reduce common tasks in a collection of queries through merging and aggregation, according to query region, attribute, time duration, and frequency, by executing the common subqueries only once. In this framework, we propose a query management scheme to support query partitioning, region aggregation and approximate processing, time partitioning and aggregation rules, multirate queries, and historical database. In order to validate the performance of our algorithm, a heuristic routing protocol is also described. The performance simulation results show that the overall energy consumption for forwarding and answering a collection of queries can be significantly reduced by applying our query management scheme. The advantages and disadvantages of the proposed scheme are discussed, together with open research issues
Spectral and Energy Efficiency in Cellular Mobile Radio Access Networks
Driven by the widespread use of smartphones and the release of a wide range of online packet data services, an unprecedented growth in the mobile data usage has been observed over the last decade. Network operators recently realised that the traditional approach of deploying more macrocells could not cope with this continuous growth in mobile data traffic and if no actions are taken, the energy demand to run the networks, which are able to support such traffic volumes risks to become unmanageable.
In this context, comprehensive investigations of different cellular network deployments, and various algorithms have been evaluated and compared against each other in this thesis, to determine the best deployment options which are able to deliver the required capacity at a minimum level of energy consumption. A new scalable base station power consumption model was proposed and a joint evaluation framework for the relative improvements in throughput, energy consumption, and energy efficiency is adopted to avoid the inherent ambiguity of using only the bit/J energy efficiency metric.
This framework was applied to many cellular network cases studies including macro only, small cell only and heterogeneous networks to show that pure small cell deployments outperform the macro and heterogeneous networks in terms of the energy consumption even if the backhaul power consumption is included in the analysis. Interestingly, picocell only deployments can attain up to 3 times increase in the throughput and 2.27 times reduction in the energy consumed when compared with macro only RANs at high target capacities, while it offers 2 times more throughput and reduces the energy consumption by 12% when compared with the macro/pico HetNet deployments. Further investigations have focused on improving the macrocell RAN by adding more sectors and more antennas. Importantly, the results have shown that adding small cells to the macrocell RAN is more energy efficient than adding more sectors even if adaptive sectorisation techniques are employed. While dimensioning the network by using MIMO base stations results in less consumed energy than using SISO base stations.
The impact of traffic offloading to small cell, sleep mode, and inter-cell interference coordination techniques on the throughput and energy consumption in dense heterogeneous network deployments have been investigated. Significant improvements in the throughput and energy efficiency in bit/J were observed. However, a decrease in the energy consumption is obtained only in heterogeneous networks with small cells deployed to service clusters of users.
Finally, the same framework is used to evaluate the throughput and energy consumption of massive MIMO deployments to show the superiority of massive MIMOs versus macrocell RANs, small cell deployments and heterogeneous networks in terms of achieving the target capacity with a minimum level of energy consumption. 1.6 times reduction in the energy consumption is achieved by massive MIMOs when compared with picocell only RAN at the same target capacity and when the backhaul power consumption is included in the analysis
Design and control approaches for energy harvesting wireless sensor networks
Wireless Networks are monitoring infrastructures composed of sensing (measuring), computing, and communication devices used to observe, supervise and monitor environmental phenomena. Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks (EH-WSN) have the additional feature to save energy from the environment in order to ensure long life autonomy of the entire network, without ideally the human intervention over long periods of time. The present work is aimed to address some of the most significant limitations of the actual EH-WSN, making a step forward the perpetual operation of EH-WSN. In this dissertation, design methodology and management policies are proposed to improve EH-WSN in terms of application performances, traffic congestion and energy efficiency. The study explicitly targets to energy-efficient affordable ways to develop more reliable and trustworthy EH-WSN, capable to ensure long life and desired performances. The presentation is organized into two macro sections, or Parts: the first one is dedicated to design the main EH-WSN hardware and software parameters that affect the energy efficiency of a sensor node, while in the second part three dynamic control strategies are proposed to outperform the EH-WSN in terms of energy efficiency, traffic congestion and application requirements
Energy efficiency heterogeneous wireless communication network with QoS support
The overarching goal of this thesis is to investigate network architectures,
and find the trade-off between low overall energy use and maintaining the
level of quality of service (QoS), or even improve it. The ubiquitous wireless
communications environment supports the exploration of different network
architectures and techniques, the so-called heterogeneous network. Two
kinds of heterogeneous architectures are considered: a combined cellular
and femtocell network and a combined cellular, femtocell and Wireless Local
Area Network(WLAN) network.
This thesis concludes that the investigated heterogeneous networks can
significantly reduce the overall power consumption, depending on the uptake
of femtocells and WLANs. Also, QoS remains high when the power
consumption drops. The main energy saving is from reducing the macrocell
base station embodied and operational energy. When QoS is evaluated based
on the combined cellular and femtocell architecture, it is suggested that use
of resource scheduling for femtocells within the macrocell is crucial since
femtocell performance is affected significantly by interference when installed
in a co-channel system. Additionally, the femtocell transmission power mode
is investigated using either variable power level or a fixed power level. To
achieve both energy efficiency and QoS, the choice of system configurations
should change according to the density of the femtocell deployment. When
combining deployment of femtocells with WLANs, more users are able to
experience a higher QoS. Due to increasing of data traffic and smartphone
usage in the future, WLANs are more important for offloading data from the
macrocell, reducing power consumption and also increasing the bandwidth.
The localised heterogeneous network is a promising technique for achieving
power efficiency and a high QoS system
Improved planning and resource management in next generation green mobile communication networks
In upcoming years, mobile communication networks will experience a disruptive reinventing process through the deployment of post 5th Generation (5G) mobile networks. Profound impacts are expected on network planning processes, maintenance and operations, on mobile services, subscribers with major changes in their data consumption and generation behaviours, as well as on devices itself, with a myriad of different equipment communicating over such networks. Post 5G will be characterized by a profound transformation of several aspects: processes, technology, economic, social, but also environmental aspects, with energy efficiency and carbon neutrality playing an important role. It will represent a network of networks: where different types of access networks will coexist, an increasing diversity of devices of different nature, massive cloud computing utilization and subscribers with unprecedented data-consuming behaviours. All at greater throughput and quality of service, as unseen in previous generations.
The present research work uses 5G new radio (NR) latest release as baseline for developing the research activities, with future networks post 5G NR in focus. Two approaches were followed: i) method re-engineering, to propose new mechanisms and overcome existing or predictably existing limitations and ii) concept design and innovation, to propose and present innovative methods or mechanisms to enhance and improve the design, planning, operation, maintenance and optimization of 5G networks. Four main research areas were addressed, focusing on optimization and enhancement of 5G NR future networks, the usage of edge virtualized functions, subscriber’s behavior towards the generation of data and a carbon sequestering model aiming to achieve carbon neutrality. Several contributions have been made and demonstrated, either through models of methodologies that will, on each of the research areas, provide significant improvements and enhancements from the planning phase to the operational phase, always focusing on optimizing resource management. All the contributions are retro compatible with 5G NR and can also be applied to what starts being foreseen as future mobile networks. From the subscriber’s perspective and the ultimate goal of providing the best quality of experience possible, still considering the mobile network operator’s (MNO) perspective, the different proposed or developed approaches resulted in optimization methods for the numerous problems identified throughout the work. Overall, all of such contributed individually but aggregately as a whole to improve and enhance globally future mobile networks. Therefore, an answer to the main question was provided: how to further optimize a next-generation network - developed with optimization in mind - making it even more efficient while, simultaneously, becoming neutral concerning carbon emissions. The developed model for MNOs which aimed to achieve carbon neutrality through CO2 sequestration together with the subscriber’s behaviour model - topics still not deeply focused nowadays – are two of the main contributions of this thesis and of utmost importance for post-5G networks.
Best Environmental Management Practice in the Telecommunications and ICT Services sector: Learning from front runners
The steady growth over the past decades of the Telecommunications and ICT Services sector, and its uninterrupted progress with the constant provision of renewed and ever-faster services as well as new applications, has transformed many aspects of our society and lives but has also spurred the development of ever more power- and resource-hungry systems, contributing to the sector’s ever-growing environmental footprint.
On the basis of an in-depth analysis of the actions implemented by environmental front runners and of existing EU and industry initiatives addressing the environmental performance of the sector, this report describes a set of best practices with high potential for larger uptake. These are called Best Environmental Management Practices (BEMPs).
The BEMPs, identified in close cooperation with a technical working group comprising experts from the sector, cover improvement of environmental performance across all significant environmental aspects (energy consumption, resource consumption, etc.) at the different life cycle stages (planning and design, installation, operation, end-of-life management, etc.) and for different ICT assets (software, data centres, etc.).
Besides actions aimed at reducing the environmental impact of Telecommunications and ICT Services operations (with a special focus on data centres and telecommunications networks), the report also identifies best practices in the ICT sector that contribute towards reducing the environmental impact of other sectors of the economy ("greening by ICT" measures).
The report gives a wide range of information (environmental benefits, economics, indicators, benchmarks, references, etc.) for each of the proposed best practices in order to be a source of inspiration and guidance for any company in the sector wishing to improve its environmental performance. In addition, it will be the technical basis for a Sectoral Reference Document on Best Environmental Management Practice for the Telecommunications and ICT Services sector, to be produced by the European Commission according to Article 46 of Regulation (EC) No 1221/2009 (EMAS Regulation).JRC.B.5-Circular Economy and Industrial Leadershi
