    Dense point sets have sparse Delaunay triangulations

    The spread of a finite set of points is the ratio between the longest and shortest pairwise distances. We prove that the Delaunay triangulation of any set of n points in R^3 with spread D has complexity O(D^3). This bound is tight in the worst case for all D = O(sqrt{n}). In particular, the Delaunay triangulation of any dense point set has linear complexity. We also generalize this upper bound to regular triangulations of k-ply systems of balls, unions of several dense point sets, and uniform samples of smooth surfaces. On the other hand, for any n and D=O(n), we construct a regular triangulation of complexity Omega(nD) whose n vertices have spread D.Comment: 31 pages, 11 figures. Full version of SODA 2002 paper.     3D Delaunay triangulation of non-uniform point distributions

    In view of the simplicity and the linearity of regular grid insertion, a multi-grid insertion scheme is proposed for the three-dimensional Delaunay triangulation of non-uniform point distributions by recursive application of the regular grid insertion to an arbitrary subset of the original point set. The fundamentals and difficulties of three-dimensional Delaunay triangulation of highly non-uniformly distributed points by the insertion method are reviewed. Current strategies and methods of point insertions for non-uniformly distributed spatial points are discussed. An enhanced kd-tree insertion algorithm with a specified number of points in a cell and its natural sequence derived from a sandwich insertion scheme is also presented. The regular grid insertion, the enhanced kd-tree insertion and the multi-grid insertion have been rigorously studied with benchmark non-uniform distributions of 0.4–20 million points. It is found that the kd-tree insertion is more efficient in locating the base tetrahedron, but it is also more sensitive to the triangulation of non-uniform point distributions with a large amount of conflicting elongated tetrahedra.     Computing Delaunay-Triangulations in Manhatten and Maximum Metric

    Delaunay-Triangulations (the duals of Voronoi Diagrams) are well known to be structures that contain a lot of neighborhood-information about a given (finite) set of points in the plane. Many algorithms rely on efficient procedures to compute them in practical applications, yet the textbook descriptions usually only treat the case of Euclidean metric. We modify one of the algorithms known for the Euclidean case (the incremental algorithm of Ohya, Iri, and Murota) to become suitable for a more general class of ''Delaunay Triangulations'' including those for the Manhattan and Maximum metrics. We give a detailed description of this algorithm that makes it (rather) easy to write a computer program for the calculation of Delaunay Triangulations for these metrics.     Preprocessing Imprecise Points for Delaunay Triangulation: Simplified and Extended

    Suppose we want to compute the Delaunay triangulation of a set P whose points are restricted to a collection R of input regions known in advance. Building on recent work by Löffler and Snoeyink, we show how to leverage our knowledge of R for faster Delaunay computation. Our approach needs no fancy machinery and optimally handles a wide variety of inputs, e.g., overlapping disks of different sizes and fat regions.     International audienceWe propose a new data structure to compute the Delaunay triangulation of a set of points in the plane. It combines good worst case complexity, fast behavior on real data, small memory occupation and the possibility of fully dynamic insertions and deletions. The location structure is organized into several levels. The lowest level just consists of the triangulation, then each level contains the triangulation of a small sample of the level below. Point location is done by walking in a triangulation to determine the nearest neighbor of the query at that level, then the walk restarts from that neighbor at the level below. Using a small subset (3%) to sample a level allows a small memory occupation; the walk and the use of the nearest neighbor to change levels quickly locate the query

    Computations of Delaunay and Higher Order Triangulations, with Applications to Splines

    Digital data that consist of discrete points are frequently captured and processed by scientific and engineering applications. Due to the rapid advance of new data gathering technologies, data set sizes are increasing, and the data distributions are becoming more irregular. These trends call for new computational tools that are both efficient enough to handle large data sets and flexible enough to accommodate irregularity. A mathematical foundation that is well-suited for developing such tools is triangulation, which can be defined for discrete point sets with little assumption about their distribution. The potential benefits from using triangulation are not fully exploited. The challenges fundamentally stem from the complexity of the triangulation structure, which generally takes more space to represent than the input points. This complexity makes developing a triangulation program a delicate task, particularly when it is important that the program runs fast and robustly over large data. This thesis addresses these challenges in two parts. The first part concentrates on techniques designed for efficiently and robustly computing Delaunay triangulations of three kinds of practical data: the terrain data from LIDAR sensors commonly found in GIS, the atom coordinate data used for biological applications, and the time varying volume data generated from from scientific simulations. The second part addresses the problem of defining spline spaces over triangulations in two dimensions. It does so by generalizing Delaunay configurations, defined as follows. For a given point set P in two dimensions, a Delaunay configuration is a pair of subsets (T, I) from P, where T, called the boundary set, is a triplet and I, called the interior set, is the set of points that fall in the circumcircle through T. The size of the interior set is the degree of the configuration. As recently discovered by Neamtu (2004), for a chosen point set, the set of all degree k Delaunay configurations can be associated with a set of degree k plus 1 splines that form the basis of a spline space. In particular, for the trivial case of k equals 0, the spline space coincides with the PL interpolation functions over the Delaunay triangulation. Neamtu’s definition of the spline space relies only on a few structural properties of the Delaunay configurations. This raises the question whether there exist other sets of configurations with identical structural properties. If there are, then these sets of configurations—let us call them generalized configurations from hereon—can be substituted for Delaunay configurations in Neamtu’s definition of spline space thereby yielding a family of splines over the same point set

    Curved Voronoi diagrams

    Voronoi diagrams are fundamental data structures that have been extensively studied in Computational Geometry. A Voronoi diagram can be defined as the minimization diagram of a finite set of continuous functions. Usually, each of those functions is interpreted as the distance function to an object. The as- sociated Voronoi diagram subdivides the embedding space into regions, each region consisting of the points that are closer to a given object than to the others. We may define many variants of Voronoi diagrams depending on the class of objects, the distance functions and the embedding space. Affine di- agrams, i.e. diagrams whose cells are convex polytopes, are well understood. Their properties can be deduced from the properties of polytopes and they can be constructed efficiently. The situation is very different for Voronoi dia- grams with curved regions. Curved Voronoi diagrams arise in various contexts where the objects are not punctual or the distance is not the Euclidean dis- tance. We survey the main results on curved Voronoi diagrams. We describe in some detail two general mechanisms to obtain effective algorithms for some classes of curved Voronoi diagrams. The first one consists in linearizing the diagram and applies, in particular, to diagrams whose bisectors are algebraic hypersurfaces. The second one is a randomized incremental paradigm that can construct affine and several planar non-affine diagrams. We finally introduce the concept of Medial Axis which generalizes the concept of Voronoi diagram to infinite sets. Interestingly, it is possible to efficiently construct a certified approximation of the medial axis of a bounded set from the Voronoi diagram of a sample of points on the boundary of the set

    Robust and Efficient Delaunay Triangulations of Points on Or Close to a Sphere

    International audienceWe propose two ways to compute the Delaunay triangulation of points on a sphere, or of rounded points close to a sphere, both based on the classic incremental algorithm initially designed for the plane. We use the so-called space of circles as mathematical background for this work. We present a fully robust implementation built upon existing generic algorithms provided by the Cgal library. The efficiency of the implementation is established by benchmarks
