Adaptive interference suppression for DS-CDMA systems based on interpolated FIR filters with adaptive interpolators in multipath channels
In this work we propose an adaptive linear receiver structure based on interpolated finite impulse response (FIR) filters with adaptive interpolators for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems in multipath channels. The interpolated minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) and the interpolated constrained minimum variance (CMV) solutions are described for a novel scheme where the interpolator is rendered time-varying in order to mitigate multiple access interference (MAI) and multiple-path propagation effects. Based upon the interpolated MMSE and CMV solutions we present computationally efficient stochastic gradient (SG) and exponentially weighted recursive least squares type (RLS) algorithms for both receiver and interpolator filters in the supervised and blind modes of operation. A convergence analysis of the algorithms and a discussion of the convergence properties of the method are carried out for both modes of operation. Simulation experiments for a downlink scenario show that the proposed structures achieve a superior BER convergence and steady-state performance to previously reported reduced-rank receivers at lower complexity
Cyclic Prefix-Free MC-CDMA Arrayed MIMO Communication Systems
The objective of this thesis is to investigate MC-CDMA MIMO systems where
the antenna array geometry is taken into consideration. In most MC-CDMA
systems, cyclic pre xes, which reduce the spectral e¢ ciency, are used. In order
to improve the spectral efficiency, this research study is focused on cyclic pre x-
free MC-CDMA MIMO architectures.
Initially, space-time wireless channel models are developed by considering the
spatio-temporal mechanisms of the radio channel, such as multipath propaga-
tion. The spatio-temporal channel models are based on the concept of the array
manifold vector, which enables the parametric modelling of the channel.
The array manifold vector is extended to the multi-carrier space-time array
(MC-STAR) manifold matrix which enables the use of spatio-temporal signal
processing techniques. Based on the modelling, a new cyclic pre x-free MC-
CDMA arrayed MIMO communication system is proposed and its performance
is compared with a representative existing system. Furthermore, a MUSIC-type
algorithm is then developed for the estimation of the channel parameters of the
received signal.
This proposed cyclic pre x-free MC-CDMA arrayed MIMO system is then
extended to consider the effects of spatial diffusion in the wireless channel. Spatial
diffusion is an important channel impairment which is often ignored and the
failure to consider such effects leads to less than satisfactory performance. A
subspace-based approach is proposed for the estimation of the channel parameters
and spatial spread and reception of the desired signal.
Finally, the problem of joint optimization of the transmit and receive beam-
forming weights in the downlink of a cyclic pre x-free MC-CDMA arrayed MIMO
communication system is investigated. A subcarrier-cooperative approach is used
for the transmit beamforming so that there is greater flexibility in the allocation
of channel symbols. The resulting optimization problem, with a per-antenna
transmit power constraint, is solved by the Lagrange multiplier method and an
iterative algorithm is proposed

Spatio-Temporal processing for Optimum Uplink-Downlink WCDMA Systems
The capacity of a cellular system is limited by two different phenomena, namely
multipath fading and multiple access interference (MAl). A Two Dimensional (2-D)
receiver combats both of these by processing the signal both in the spatial and temporal
domain. An ideal 2-D receiver would perform joint space-time processing, but at the
price of high computational complexity. In this research we investigate computationally
simpler technique termed as a Beamfom1er-Rake. In a Beamformer-Rake, the output of a
beamfom1er is fed into a succeeding temporal processor to take advantage of both the
beamformer and Rake receiver. Wireless service providers throughout the world are
working to introduce the third generation (3G) and beyond (3G) cellular service that will
provide higher data rates and better spectral efficiency. Wideband COMA (WCDMA)
has been widely accepted as one of the air interfaces for 3G. A Beamformer-Rake
receiver can be an effective solution to provide the receivers enhanced capabilities
needed to achieve the required performance of a WCDMA system.
We consider three different Pilot Symbol Assisted (PSA) beamforming techniques,
Direct Matrix Inversion (DMI), Least-Mean Square (LMS) and Recursive Least Square
(RLS) adaptive algorithms. Geometrically Based Single Bounce (GBSB) statistical
Circular channel model is considered, which is more suitable for array processing, and
conductive to RAKE combining. The performances of the Beam former-Rake receiver are
evaluated in this channel model as a function of the number of antenna elements and
RAKE fingers, in which are evaluated for the uplink WCDMA system. It is shown that,
the Beamformer-Rake receiver outperforms the conventional RAKE receiver and the
conventional beamformer by a significant margin. Also, we optimize and develop a
mathematical formulation for the output Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR)
of a Beam former-Rake receiver.
In this research, also, we develop, simulate and evaluate the SINR and Signal to Noise
Ratio (Et!Nol performances of an adaptive beamforming technique in the WCDMA
system for downlink. The performance is then compared with an omnidirectional antenna
system. Simulation shows that the best perfom1ance can be achieved when all the mobiles
with same Angle-of-Arrival (AOA) and different distance from base station are formed in
one beam
Interference Suppression in WCDMA with Adaptive Thresholding based Decision Feedback Equaliser
WCDMA is considered as one of the 3G wireless standards by 3GPP. Capacity calculation shows that WCDMA systems have more capacity compared to any other multiple access technique such as time division multiple access (TDMA) or frequency division multiple access (FDMA). So it is widely used. Rake receivers are used for the detection of transmitted data in case of WCDMA communication systems due to its resistance to multipath fading. But rake receiver treat multiuser interference (MUI) as AWGN and have limitation in overcoming the effect of multiple access interference (MAI) when the SNR is high. A de-correlating matched filter has been used in this thesis, which eliminates and improves system performance. But the given receiver works well only in the noise free environment. A DFE, compared to linear equaliser, gives better performance at severe ISI condition. The only problem in this equalisation technique is to select the number of symbols that are to be fed back. This thesis gives an idea on multiple symbol selection, based on sparity where an adaptive thresholding algorithm is used that computes the number of symbols to feedback. Simulated results show a significant performance improvement for Regularised Rake receiver along with thresholding in terms of BER compared to a rake receiver, de-correlating rake receiver and regularised rake receiver. The performance of the receiver in different channels is also analysed
Uplink beamforming for the FDD mode of UTRA
This paper presents some link level simulation results for the evaluation of adaptive antennas in the uplink of the FDD mode of UTRA (UMTS terrestrial radio access). Two families of algorithms were initially considered, the basic difference between them being their ability/disability to suppress the contribution from W-CDMA directional interfering sources. Two distinct schemes were established as representatives for each family and their performance was evaluated in presence of some illustrative interfering scenarios. In the light of the results it is shown that time-reference beamforming algorithms suffer from severe beam pattern distortion effects when applied as such. This in turn causes harsh performance degradation in terms of raw BER, especially at high SINR levels. It is shown that these shortcomings are essentially caused by the uplink multiplexing of the traffic channel, which is seen by the base station as a powerful interfering source coming from the direction of arrival of the desired user.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Enhanced Receivers for Interference Cancellation in 3G Systems
Interference cancellation and multiuser detection in CDMA systems are still actual research topics. These techniques enable us to deal with interference and to increase system capacity. In this paper, a so-called Generalized RAKE receiver, an Uplink generalized multiuser detection and a Blind adaptive multiuser detection are described. These algorithms are compared with conventional receivers and their properties are verified via simulations. The results imply that some of these algorithms are able to overcome the performance of the conventional receivers
