    QoS aware radio access technology selection framework in heterogeneous networks using SDN

    This paper addresses the problem of radio access technology (RAT) selection in heterogeneous networks (HetNets). Current approaches rely on signal related metrics such as signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) for selection of the best network for the wireless user. However, such approaches do not take into account the quality of service (QoS) requirements of wireless users and therefore often do not connect them to the most suitable network. We propose a QoS aware RAT selection framework for HetNets based on software-defined networking (SDN). The proposed framework implements a RAT selection strategy that reflects QoS requirements of downlink flows using a metric called fittingness factor (FF). The framework relies on the flexibility and centralised nature of SDN to implement monitoring and RAT capacity assessment mechanisms that help in the realisation of the selection strategy. The simulation campaign illustrates the important gains achieved by our RAT selection framework in terms of data rates assigned to the wireless users, their satisfaction, and their quality of experience (QoE) compared against other state of the art RAT selection solutions

    Heterogeneous wireless networks is a term referring to networks combining different radio access technologies with the aim of establishing the best connection possible. In this case, users with multi-mode terminals can connect via different wireless technologies, such as 802.16, 802.11, UMTS, HSPA and LTE, all at the same time. The problem consists in the selection of the most suitable from all radio access technologies available. The decision process is called network selection, and depends on several parameters, such as quality of service, mobility, cost, energy, battery life, etc. Several methods and approaches have been proposed in this context, with their objective being to offer the best QoS to the users, and/or to maximize re-usability of the networks. This paper represents a survey of the network selection methods used. Multiple attribute-dependent decision-making methods are presented. Furthermore, the game theory concept is illustrated, the use of the fuzzy logic is presented, and the utility functions defining the network selection process are discussed

    Distributed Relay Selection for Heterogeneous UAV Communication Networks Using A Many-to-Many Matching Game Without Substitutability

    This paper proposes a distributed multiple relay selection scheme to maximize the satisfaction experiences of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) communication networks. The multi-radio and multi-channel (MRMC) UAV communication system is considered in this paper. One source UAV can select one or more relay radios, and each relay radio can be shared by multiple source UAVs equally. Without the center controller, source UAVs with heterogeneous requirements compete for channels dominated by relay radios. In order to optimize the global satisfaction performance, we model the UAV communication network as a many-to-many matching market without substitutability. We design a potential matching approach to address the optimization problem, in which the optimizing of local matching process will lead to the improvement of global matching results. Simulation results show that the proposed distributed matching approach yields good matching performance of satisfaction, which is close to the global optimum result. Moreover, the many-to-many potential matching approach outperforms existing schemes sufficiently in terms of global satisfaction within a reasonable convergence time.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, conferenc
