    An Improvement of Load Flow Solution for Power System Networks using Evolutionary-Swarm Intelligence Optimizers

    Load flow report which reveals the existing state of the power system network under steady operating conditions, subject to certain constraints is being bedeviled by issues of accuracy and convergence. In this research, five AI-based load flow solutions classified under evolutionary-swarm intelligence optimizers are deployed for power flow studies in the 330kV, 34-bus, 38-branch section of the Nigerian transmission grid. The evolutionary-swarm optimizers used in this research consist of one evolutionary algorithm and four swarm intelligence algorithms namely; biogeography-based optimization (BBO), particle swarm optimization (PSO), spider monkey optimization (SMO), artificial bee colony optimization (ABCO) and ant colony optimization (ACO). BBO as a sole evolutionary algorithm is being configured alongside four swarm intelligence optimizers for an optimal power flow solution with the aim of performance evaluation through physical and statistical means. Assessment report upon application of these standalone algorithms on the 330kV Nigerian grid under two (accuracy and convergence) metrics produced PSO and ACO as the best-performed algorithms. Three test cases (scenarios) were adopted based on the number of iterations (100, 500, and 1000) for proper assessment of the algorithms and the results produced were validated using mean average percentage error (MAPE) with values of voltage profile created by each solution algorithm in line with the IEEE voltage regulatory standards. All algorithms proved to be good load flow solvers with distinct levels of precision and speed. While PSO and SMO produced the best and worst results for accuracy with MAPE values of 3.11% and 36.62%, ACO and PSO produced the best and worst results for convergence (computational speed) after 65 and 530 average number of iterations. Since accuracy supersedes speed from scientific considerations, PSO is the overall winner and should be cascaded with ACO for an automated hybrid swarm intelligence load flow model in future studies. Future research should consider hybridizing ACO and PSO for a more computationally efficient solution model

    Strategy Tripod Perspective on the Determinants of Airline Efficiency in A Global Context: An Application of DEA and Tobit Analysis

    The airline industry is vital to contemporary civilization since it is a key player in the globalization process: linking regions, fostering global commerce, promoting tourism and aiding economic and social progress. However, there has been little study on the link between the operational environment and airline efficiency. Investigating the amalgamation of institutions, organisations and strategic decisions is critical to understanding how airlines operate efficiently. This research aims to employ the strategy tripod perspective to investigate the efficiency of a global airline sample using a non-parametric linear programming method (data envelopment analysis [DEA]). Using a Tobit regression, the bootstrapped DEA efficiency change scores are further regressed to determine the drivers of efficiency. The strategy tripod is employed to assess the impact of institutions, industry and resources on airline efficiency. Institutions are measured by global indices of destination attractiveness; industry, including competition, jet fuel and business model; and finally, resources, such as the number of full-time employees, alliances, ownership and connectivity. The first part of the study uses panel data from 35 major airlines, collected from their annual reports for the period 2011 to 2018, and country attractiveness indices from global indicators. The second part of the research involves a qualitative data collection approach and semi-structured interviews with experts in the field to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on the first part’s significant findings. The main findings reveal that airlines operate at a highly competitive level regardless of their competition intensity or origin. Furthermore, the unpredictability of the environment complicates airline operations. The efficiency drivers of an airline are partially determined by its type of business model, its degree of cooperation and how fuel cost is managed. Trade openness has a negative influence on airline efficiency. COVID-19 has toppled the airline industry, forcing airlines to reconsider their business model and continuously increase cooperation. Human resources, sustainability and alternative fuel sources are critical to airline survival. Finally, this study provides some evidence for the practicality of the strategy tripod and hints at the need for a broader approach in the study of international strategies

    Analysis and monitoring of single HaCaT cells using volumetric Raman mapping and machine learning

    No explorer reached a pole without a map, no chef served a meal without tasting, and no surgeon implants untested devices. Higher accuracy maps, more sensitive taste buds, and more rigorous tests increase confidence in positive outcomes. Biomedical manufacturing necessitates rigour, whether developing drugs or creating bioengineered tissues [1]–[4]. By designing a dynamic environment that supports mammalian cells during experiments within a Raman spectroscope, this project provides a platform that more closely replicates in vivo conditions. The platform also adds the opportunity to automate the adaptation of the cell culture environment, alongside spectral monitoring of cells with machine learning and three-dimensional Raman mapping, called volumetric Raman mapping (VRM). Previous research highlighted key areas for refinement, like a structured approach for shading Raman maps [5], [6], and the collection of VRM [7]. Refining VRM shading and collection was the initial focus, k-means directed shading for vibrational spectroscopy map shading was developed in Chapter 3 and exploration of depth distortion and VRM calibration (Chapter 4). “Cage” scaffolds, designed using the findings from Chapter 4 were then utilised to influence cell behaviour by varying the number of cage beams to change the scaffold porosity. Altering the porosity facilitated spectroscopy investigation into previously observed changes in cell biology alteration in response to porous scaffolds [8]. VRM visualised changed single human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cell morphology, providing a complementary technique for machine learning classification. Increased technical rigour justified progression onto in-situ flow chamber for Raman spectroscopy development in Chapter 6, using a Psoriasis (dithranol-HaCaT) model on unfixed cells. K-means-directed shading and principal component analysis (PCA) revealed HaCaT cell adaptations aligning with previous publications [5] and earlier thesis sections. The k-means-directed Raman maps and PCA score plots verified the drug-supplying capacity of the flow chamber, justifying future investigation into VRM and machine learning for monitoring single cells within the flow chamber

    INTEGRATED COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN, EXPERIMENTATION, AND OPTIMIZATION APPROACH FOR PEROVSKITES AND PETROLEUM PACKAGING PROCESSES

    According to the World Economic Forum report, the U.S. currently has an energy efficiency of just 30%, thus illustrating the potential scope and need for efficiency enhancement and waste minimization. In the U.S. energy sector, petroleum and solar energy are the two key pillars that have the potential to create research opportunities for transition to a cleaner, greener, and sustainable future. In this research endeavor, the focus is on two pivotal areas: (i) Computer-aided perovskite solar cell synthesis; and (ii) Optimization of flow processes through multiproduct petroleum pipelines. In the area of perovskite synthesis, the emphasis is on the enhancement of structural stability, lower costs, and sustainability. Utilizing modeling and optimization methods for computer-aided molecular design (CAMD), efficient, sustainable, less toxic, and economically viable alternatives to conventional lead-based perovskites are obtained. In the second area of optimization of flow processes through multiproduct petroleum pipelines, an actual industrial-scale operation for packaging multiple lube-oil blends is studied. Through an integrated approach of experimental characterization, process design, procedural improvements, testing protocols, control mechanisms, mathematical modeling, and optimization, the limitations of traditional packaging operations are identified, and innovative operational paradigms and strategies are developed by incorporating methods from process systems engineering and data-driven approaches

    Prediction of high-performance concrete compressive strength through a comparison of machine learning techniques

    Dissertation presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Data Science and Advanced Analytics, specialization in Data ScienceHigh-performance concrete (HPC) is a highly complex composite material whose characteristics are extremely difficult to model. One of those characteristics is the concrete compressive strength, a nonlinear function of the same ingredients that compose HPC: cement, fly ash, blast furnace slag, water, superplasticizer, age, and coarse and fine aggregates. Research has shown time and time again that concrete strength is not determined just by the water-to-cement ratio, which was for years the go to metric. In addition, traditional methods that attempt to model HPC, such as regression analysis, do not provide sufficient prediction power due to nonlinear proprieties of the mixture. Therefore, this study attempts to optimize the prediction and modeling of the compressive strength of HPC by analyzing seven different machine learning (ML) algorithms: three regularization algorithms (Lasso, Ridge and Elastic Net), three ensemble algorithms (Random Forest, Gradient Boost and AdaBoost), and Artificial Neural Networks. All techniques were built and tested with a dataset composed of data from 17 different concrete strength test laboratories, under the same experimental conditions, which enabled a fair comparison amongst them and between different previous studies in the field. Feature importance analysis and outlier analysis were also performed, and all models were subject to a Wilcoxon Signed-Ranks Test to ensure statistically significant results. The final results show that the more complex ML algorithms provided greater accuracy than the regularization techniques, with Gradient Boost being the superior model amongst them, providing more accurate predictions than the sate-of-the-art. Better results were achieved using all variables and without removing outlier observations

    Contactless excitation for electric machines: high temperature superconducting flux pumps

    With the intensification of global warming and climate change, the pace of transformation to a neutral-emission society is accelerating. In various sectors, electrification has become the absolute tendency to promote such a movement, where electric machines play an important role in the current power generation system. It is widely convinced that electric machines with very high power density are essential for future applications, which, however, can be hardly achieved by conventional technologies. Owing to the maturation of the second generation (2G) high temperature superconducting (HTS) technologies, it has been recognized that superconducting machine could be a competitive candidate to realize the vision. One significant obstacle that hinders the implementation of superconducting machines is how to provide the required magnetic fields, or in other words, how to energise them appropriately. Conventional direct injection is not suitable for HTS machines, because the current leads would bridge ambident temperature to the cryogenic environment, which can impose considerable heat load on the system and increase the operational cost. Thus, an efficient energisation method is demanded by HTS machines. As an emerging technology that can accumulate substantial flux in a closed loop without any physical contact, HTS flux pumps have been proposed as a promising solution. Among the existing developed HTS flux pumps, rotary HTS flux pumps, or so-called HTS dynamo, can output non-zero time-averaged DC voltage and charge the rest of the circuit if a closed loop has been formed. This type of flux pump is often employed together with HTS coils, where the HTS coils can potentially work in the persistent current mode, and act like electromagnets with a considerable magnetic field, having a wide range of applications in industry. The output characteristics of rotary HTS flux pumps have been extensively explored through experiments and finite element method (FEM) simulations, yet the work on constructing statistical models as an alternative approach to capture key characteristics has not been studied. In this thesis, a 2D FEM program has been developed to model the operation of rotary HTS flux pumps and evaluate the effects of different factors on the output voltage through parameter sweeping and analysis of variance. Typical design considerations, including the operating frequency, air gap, HTS tape width, and remanent flux density have been investigated, in particular, the bilateral effect of HTS tape width has been discovered and explained by looking at the averaged integration of the electric field over the HTS tape. Based on the data obtained from various simulations, regression analysis has been conducted through a collection of machine learning methods. It has been demonstrated that the output voltage of a rotary HTS flux pump can be obtained promptly with satisfactory accuracy via Gaussian process regression, aiming to provide a novel approach for future research and a powerful design tool for industrial applications using rotary HTS flux pumps. To enhance the applicability of the proposed statistical models, an updated FEM program has been built to take more parameters into account. The newly added parameters, namely the rotor radius and the width of permanent magnet, together with formerly included ones, should have covered all the key design parameters for a rotary HTS flux pump. Based on data collected from the FEM model, a well-trained semi-deep neural network (DNN) model with a back-propagation algorithm has been put forward and validated. The proposed DNN model is capable of quantifying the output voltage of a rotary HTS flux pump instantly with an overall accuracy of 98% with respect to the simulated values with all design parameters explicitly specified. The model possesses a powerful ability to characterize the output behaviour of rotary HTS flux pumps by integrating all design parameters, and the output characteristics of rotary HTS flux pumps have been successfully demonstrated and visualized using this model. Compared to conventional time-consuming FEM-based numerical models, the proposed DNN model has the advantages of fast learning, accurate computation, as well as strong programmability. Therefore, the DNN model can greatly facilitate the design and optimization process for rotary HTS flux pumps. An executable application has been developed accordingly based on the DNN model, which is believed to provide a useful tool for learners and designers of rotary HTS flux pumps. A new variant inspired by the working principles of rotary HTS flux pumps has been proposed and termed as stationary wave HTS flux pumps. The superiority of this type is that it has a simple structure without any moving components, and it utilises a controllable current-driven electromagnet to provide the required magnetic field. It has been demonstrated that the origin of the output voltage is determined by the asymmetric distribution of the dynamic resistance in the HTS tape, for which the electromagnet must be placed at such a position that its central line is not aligned with that of the HTS tape. A numerical model has been built to simulate the operation of a stationary wave HTS flux pump, based on which the output characteristics and dynamic resistance against various parameters have been investigated. Besides, accurate and reliable statistical models have been proposed to predict the open circuit voltage and effective dynamic resistance by adapting the previously developed machine learning techniques. The work presented in this PhD thesis can bring more insight into HTS flux pumps as an emerging promising contactless energisation technology, and the proposed statistical models can be particularly useful for the design and optimization of such devices

    Optimal speed trajectory and energy management control for connected and automated vehicles

    Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) emerge as a promising solution to improve urban mobility, safety, energy efficiency, and passenger comfort with the development of communication technologies, such as vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I). This thesis proposes several control approaches for CAVs with electric powertrains, including hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs), with the main objective to improve energy efficiency by optimising vehicle speed trajectory and energy management system. By types of vehicle control, these methods can be categorised into three main scenarios, optimal energy management for a single CAV (single-vehicle), energy-optimal strategy for the vehicle following scenario (two-vehicle), and optimal autonomous intersection management for CAVs (multiple-vehicle). The first part of this thesis is devoted to the optimal energy management for a single automated series HEV with consideration of engine start-stop system (SSS) under battery charge sustaining operation. A heuristic hysteresis power threshold strategy (HPTS) is proposed to optimise the fuel economy of an HEV with SSS and extra penalty fuel for engine restarts. By a systematic tuning process, the overall control performance of HPTS can be fully optimised for different vehicle parameters and driving cycles. In the second part, two energy-optimal control strategies via a model predictive control (MPC) framework are proposed for the vehicle following problem. To forecast the behaviour of the preceding vehicle, a neural network predictor is utilised and incorporated into a nonlinear MPC method, of which the fuel and computational efficiencies are verified to be effective through comparisons of numerical examples between a practical adaptive cruise control strategy and an impractical optimal control method. A robust MPC (RMPC) via linear matrix inequality (LMI) is also utilised to deal with the uncertainties existing in V2V communication and modelling errors. By conservative relaxation and approximation, the RMPC problem is formulated as a convex semi-definite program, and the simulation results prove the robustness of the RMPC and the rapid computational efficiency resorting to the convex optimisation. The final part focuses on the centralised and decentralised control frameworks at signal-free intersections, where the energy consumption and the crossing time of a group of CAVs are minimised. Their crossing order and velocity trajectories are optimised by convex second-order cone programs in a hierarchical scheme subject to safety constraints. It is shown that the centralised strategy with consideration of turning manoeuvres is effective and outperforms a benchmark solution invoking the widely used first-in-first-out policy. On the other hand, the decentralised method is proposed to further improve computational efficiency and enhance the system robustness via a tube-based RMPC. The numerical examples of both frameworks highlight the importance of examining the trade-off between energy consumption and travel time, as small compromises in travel time could produce significant energy savings.Open Acces

    Using personalised cardiovascular models to identify new diagnostic predictors for pre-eclampsia

    Haemodynamic adaptations play a crucial role in uteroplacental perfusion during pregnancy. In particular, modifications of the utero-ovarian arterial network cause a significant increase in blood volume distributed to the placenta and foetus. Failure to make these cardiovascular modifications results in complicated pregnancies caused by different disorders such as hypertension, pre-eclampsia, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), and placental insufficiency. In pre-eclampsia, the modifications of the utero-ovarian arterial network are unsuccessful and cause less blood volume to be distributed to the placenta and foetus. Pre-eclampsia is a hypertensive disorder that is still not fully understood, and clinicians still fail at identifying pre-eclamptic women during controls, especially at differentiating between hypertensive women and pre-eclamptic women. One reason for this is that clinicians rely heavily on blood pressure when diagnosing pre-eclampsia, and this biomarker has similar readings for both pre-eclampsia and hypertension. As part of the diagnosis of pre-eclampsia, proteinuria is used. In order to improve the diagnosis of pre-eclampsia, other biomarkers are being researched. A dataset of 21 patients was used to find novel biomarkers that can classify pre-eclampsia. The dataset is divided into two groups: uncomplicated pregnancies with hypertensive women and complicated pregnancies with pre-eclampsia. A computational model of the cardiovascular system is used to simulate blood and pressure solutions based on patient-specific observations in order to develop a new biomarker. The model employs 1D modelling which incorporates a wave intensity analysis that models forward and backward waves to provide more precise predictions of wave propagation across the artery system, particularly in the utero-ovarian system. The proposed biomarkers will include dimensionless terms formed by global maternal parameters such as systolic blood pressure, stroke volume, pulse wave velocity, etc., or local uterine parameters such as pressure and velocity in specific vessels of the uterine system. Afterwards, their ability as a classifier of pre-eclampsia will be investigated. Besides this, a case study of the prone position in pregnancy and its effects on cardiovascular changes will be carried out. To do this, the computational model will be used to study what happens when a pregnant woman is positioned in the prone position and how vital metrics like blood pressure and cardiac output are altered. It was found that the biomarkers based on the radial and arcuate arteries have a better classification ability for pre-eclampsia, even higher than the Doppler-measured Resistance Index (RI) and Pulsatility Index (PI). The novelty of this work is the introduction of new biomarkers through the use of a computational model, as well as the demonstration of the dependability and use of 1D modelling in pregnancy. The model demonstrated how biomarkers that could not be measured clinically may be easily calculated using 1D modelling and provide critical information about the utero-ovarian circulation. Future work should concentrate on changing the existing solver into a much faster and simpler solver, as well as validating the biomarkers in a larger dataset
