Flexi-WVSNP-DASH: A Wireless Video Sensor Network Platform for the Internet of Things
abstract: Video capture, storage, and distribution in wireless video sensor networks
(WVSNs) critically depends on the resources of the nodes forming the sensor
networks. In the era of big data, Internet of Things (IoT), and distributed
demand and solutions, there is a need for multi-dimensional data to be part of
the Sensor Network data that is easily accessible and consumable by humanity as
well as machinery. Images and video are expected to become as ubiquitous as is
the scalar data in traditional sensor networks. The inception of video-streaming
over the Internet, heralded a relentless research for effective ways of
distributing video in a scalable and cost effective way. There has been novel
implementation attempts across several network layers. Due to the inherent
complications of backward compatibility and need for standardization across
network layers, there has been a refocused attention to address most of the
video distribution over the application layer. As a result, a few video
streaming solutions over the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) have been
proposed. Most notable are Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) and the Motion
Picture Experts Groups Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (MPEG-DASH). These
frameworks, do not address the typical and future WVSN use cases. A highly
flexible Wireless Video Sensor Network Platform and compatible DASH (WVSNP-DASH)
are introduced. The platform's goal is to usher video as a data element that
can be integrated into traditional and non-Internet networks. A low cost,
scalable node is built from the ground up to be fully compatible with the
Internet of Things Machine to Machine (M2M) concept, as well as the ability to
be easily re-targeted to new applications in a short time. Flexi-WVSNP design
includes a multi-radio node, a middle-ware for sensor operation and
communication, a cross platform client facing data retriever/player framework,
scalable security as well as a cohesive but decoupled hardware and software

Time-sensitive autonomous architectures
Autonomous and software-defined vehicles (ASDVs) feature highly complex systems, coupling safety-critical and non-critical components such as infotainment. These systems require the highest connectivity, both inside the vehicle and with the outside world. An effective solution for network communication lies in Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) which enables high-bandwidth and low-latency communications in a mixed-criticality environment. In this work, we present Time-Sensitive Autonomous Architectures (TSAA) to enable TSN in ASDVs. The software architecture is based on a hypervisor providing strong isolation and virtual access to TSN for virtual machines (VMs). TSAA latest iteration includes an autonomous car controlled by two Xilinx accelerators and a multiport TSN switch. We discuss the engineering challenges and the performance evaluation of the project demonstrator. In addition, we propose a Proof-of-Concept design of virtualized TSN to enable multiple VMs executing on a single board taking advantage of the inherent guarantees offered by TSN
Securing Real-Time Internet-of-Things
Modern embedded and cyber-physical systems are ubiquitous. A large number of
critical cyber-physical systems have real-time requirements (e.g., avionics,
automobiles, power grids, manufacturing systems, industrial control systems,
etc.). Recent developments and new functionality requires real-time embedded
devices to be connected to the Internet. This gives rise to the real-time
Internet-of-things (RT-IoT) that promises a better user experience through
stronger connectivity and efficient use of next-generation embedded devices.
However RT- IoT are also increasingly becoming targets for cyber-attacks which
is exacerbated by this increased connectivity. This paper gives an introduction
to RT-IoT systems, an outlook of current approaches and possible research
challenges towards secure RT- IoT frameworks
Simulating Real-Time Aspects of Wireless Sensor Networks
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) technology has been mainly used in the applications with low-frequency sampling and little computational complexity. Recently, new classes of WSN-based applications with different characteristics are being considered, including process control, industrial automation and visual surveillance. Such new applications usually involve relatively heavy computations and also present real-time requirements as bounded end-to- end delay and guaranteed Quality of Service. It becomes then necessary to employ proper resource management policies, not only for communication resources but also jointly for computing resources, in the design and development of such WSN-based applications. In this context, simulation can play a critical role, together with analytical models, for validating a system design against the parameters of Quality of Service demanded for. In this paper, we present RTNS, a publicly available free simulation tool which includes Operating System aspects in wireless distributed applications. RTNS extends the well-known NS-2 simulator with models of the CPU, the Real-Time Operating System and the application tasks, to take into account delays due to the computation in addition to the communication. We demonstrate the benefits of RTNS by presenting our simulation study for a complex WSN-based multi-view vision system for real-time event detection
Low-power Wearable Healthcare Sensors
Advances in technology have produced a range of on-body sensors and smartwatches that can be used to monitor a wearer’s health with the objective to keep the user healthy. However, the real potential of such devices not only lies in monitoring but also in interactive communication with expert-system-based cloud services to offer personalized and real-time healthcare advice that will enable the user to manage their health and, over time, to reduce expensive hospital admissions. To meet this goal, the research challenges for the next generation of wearable healthcare devices include the need to offer a wide range of sensing, computing, communication, and human–computer interaction methods, all within a tiny device with limited resources and electrical power. This Special Issue presents a collection of six papers on a wide range of research developments that highlight the specific challenges in creating the next generation of low-power wearable healthcare sensors
Trailer Reverse Assist. Optical Follow Me
Backing-up a trailer is a difficult task even for experienced users, and thus, solutions exist for assisting the steering of a vehicle-trailer system by just requiring the input of the desired trailer’s trajectory. Nevertheless, the problem is not entirely solved as the selected trajectory clearance while reversing a trailer is not completely available due to visibility obstructions, making reversing a trailer an unsafe maneuver. The objective of this work is to perform a proof-of-concept of a system which aids the user in the process of backing up a trailer through the desired trajectory where limited visibility is present. This was accomplished by developing an add-on feature capable of tracking a helping person. The new feature provides the required information so that existing compatible trailer reversing solutions can steer and accelerate the vehicle to follow the tracked person while also keeping a safe distance. Moreover, potential collisions are prevented by the addition of a close proximity object detection functionality. For this, a scaled prototype of the proposed system was developed by applying the “Vee Model” methodology where the requirements, architecture, solution design, implementation, and validation steps were followed. A successful proof-of-concept was accomplished after validating the capacity of the prototype to both identify and follow a person, while maintaining a safe distance, and to detect objects in the vehicle’s path. In addition, the documentation of the system’s design, development, and validation was achieved rendering the feature ready for full scale development. In conclusion, the “Trailer Reverse Assist - Optical Follow Me” system add-on can further assist in the process of backing-up a trailer safely in environments where the visibility is limited while also preventing collisions with nearby objects.ITESO, A. A Distributed Computing Architecture for Small Satellite and Multi-Spacecraft Missions
Distributed computing architectures offer numerous advantages in the development of complex devices and systems. This paper describes the design, implementation and testing of a distributed computing architecture for low-cost small satellite and multi-spacecraft missions. This system is composed of a network of PICmicro® microcontrollers linked together by an I2C serial data communication bus. The system also supports sensor and component integration via Dallas 1-wire and RS232 standards. A configuration control processor serves as the external gateway for communication to the ground and other satellites in the network; this processor runs a multitasking real-time operating system and an advanced production rule system for on-board autonomy. The data handling system allows for direct command and data routing between distinct hardware components and software tasks. This capability naturally extends to distributed control between spacecraft subsystems, between constellation satellites, and between the space and ground segments. This paper describes the technical design of the aforementioned features. It also reviews the use of this system as part of the two-satellite Emerald and QUEST university small satellite missions
FireFly Mosaic: A Vision-Enabled Wireless Sensor Networking System
Abstract — With the advent of CMOS cameras, it is now possible to make compact, cheap and low-power image sensors capable of on-board image processing. These embedded vision sensors provide a rich new sensing modality enabling new classes of wireless sensor networking applications. In order to build these applications, system designers need to overcome challanges associated with limited bandwith, limited power, group coordination and fusing of multiple camera views with various other sensory inputs. Real-time properties must be upheld if multiple vision sensors are to process data, com-municate with each other and make a group decision before the measured environmental feature changes. In this paper, we present FireFly Mosaic, a wireless sensor network image processing framework with operating system, networking and image processing primitives that assist in the development of distributed vision-sensing tasks. Each FireFly Mosaic wireless camera consists of a FireFly [1] node coupled with a CMUcam3 [2] embedded vision processor. The FireFly nodes run the Nano-RK [3] real-time operating system and communicate using the RT-Link [4] collision-free TDMA link protocol. Using FireFly Mosaic, we demonstrate an assisted living application capable of fusing multiple cameras with overlapping views to discover and monitor daily activities in a home. Using this application, we show how an integrated platform with support for time synchronization, a collision-free TDMA link layer, an underlying RTOS and an interface to an embedded vision sensor provides a stable framework for distributed real-time vision processing.
