    Localisation in wireless sensor networks for disaster recovery and rescuing in built environments

    A thesis submitted to the University of Bedfordshire in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of PhilosophyProgress in micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) and radio frequency (RF) technology has fostered the development of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Different from traditional networks, WSNs are data-centric, self-configuring and self-healing. Although WSNs have been successfully applied in built environments (e.g. security and services in smart homes), their applications and benefits have not been fully explored in areas such as disaster recovery and rescuing. There are issues related to self-localisation as well as practical constraints to be taken into account. The current state-of-the art communication technologies used in disaster scenarios are challenged by various limitations (e.g. the uncertainty of RSS). Localisation in WSNs (location sensing) is a challenging problem, especially in disaster environments and there is a need for technological developments in order to cater to disaster conditions. This research seeks to design and develop novel localisation algorithms using WSNs to overcome the limitations in existing techniques. A novel probabilistic fuzzy logic based range-free localisation algorithm (PFRL) is devised to solve localisation problems for WSNs. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm performs better than other range free localisation algorithms (namely DVhop localisation, Centroid localisation and Amorphous localisation) in terms of localisation accuracy by 15-30% with various numbers of anchors and degrees of radio propagation irregularity. In disaster scenarios, for example, if WSNs are applied to sense fire hazards in building, wireless sensor nodes will be equipped on different floors. To this end, PFRL has been extended to solve sensor localisation problems in 3D space. Computational results show that the 3D localisation algorithm provides better localisation accuracy when varying the system parameters with different communication/deployment models. PFRL is further developed by applying dynamic distance measurement updates among the moving sensors in a disaster environment. Simulation results indicate that the new method scales very well

    Dead Reckoning Localization Technique for Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks

    Localization in wireless sensor networks not only provides a node with its geographical location but also a basic requirement for other applications such as geographical routing. Although a rich literature is available for localization in static WSN, not enough work is done for mobile WSNs, owing to the complexity due to node mobility. Most of the existing techniques for localization in mobile WSNs uses Monte-Carlo localization, which is not only time-consuming but also memory intensive. They, consider either the unknown nodes or anchor nodes to be static. In this paper, we propose a technique called Dead Reckoning Localization for mobile WSNs. In the proposed technique all nodes (unknown nodes as well as anchor nodes) are mobile. Localization in DRLMSN is done at discrete time intervals called checkpoints. Unknown nodes are localized for the first time using three anchor nodes. For their subsequent localizations, only two anchor nodes are used. The proposed technique estimates two possible locations of a node Using Bezouts theorem. A dead reckoning approach is used to select one of the two estimated locations.     Device-free Localization using Received Signal Strength Measurements in Radio Frequency Network

    Device-free localization (DFL) based on the received signal strength (RSS) measurements of radio frequency (RF)links is the method using RSS variation due to the presence of the target to localize the target without attaching any device. The majority of DFL methods utilize the fact the link will experience great attenuation when obstructed. Thus that localization accuracy depends on the model which describes the relationship between RSS loss caused by obstruction and the position of the target. The existing models is too rough to explain some phenomenon observed in the experiment measurements. In this paper, we propose a new model based on diffraction theory in which the target is modeled as a cylinder instead of a point mass. The proposed model can will greatly fits the experiment measurements and well explain the cases like link crossing and walking along the link line. Because the measurement model is nonlinear, particle filtering tracing is used to recursively give the approximate Bayesian estimation of the position. The posterior Cramer-Rao lower bound (PCRLB) of proposed tracking method is also derived. The results of field experiments with 8 radio sensors and a monitored area of 3.5m 3.5m show that the tracking error of proposed model is improved by at least 36 percent in the single target case and 25 percent in the two targets case compared to other models.Comment: This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to some mistake

    Monte Carlo localization algorithm based on particle swarm optimization

    In wireless sensor networks, Monte Carlo localization for mobile nodes has a large positioning error and slow convergence speed. To address the challenges of low sampling efficiency and particle impoverishment, a time sequence Monte Carlo localization algorithm based on particle swarm optimization (TSMCL-BPSO) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the sampling region is constructed according to the overlap of the initial sampling region and the Monte Carlo sampling region. Then, particle swarm optimization (PSO) strategy is adopted to search the optimum position of the target node. The velocity of particle swarm is updated by adaptive step size and the particle impoverishment is improved by distributed estimation and particle replication, which avoids the local optimum caused by the premature convergence of particles. Experiment results indicate that the proposed algorithm improves the particle fitness, increases the particle searching efficiency, and meanwhile the lower positioning error can be obtained at the node\u27s maximum speed of 70 m/s

    Localisation of wireless sensor network with mobile beacon by dynamic path

Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology.Small size and low-cost sensors are practicable because of evolution of the semiconductor field, which is led by increasing miniaturisation. They are still limited in processor capacity, memory size and energy resources; however, ubiquitous wireless is added to extend their communication capacity. Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are formed by large numbers of such sensors and can be used to monitor a field of interest in military and civilian areas. The resulting data are only meaningful when combined with geographical position information of the sensors. Both the Global Positioning System (GPS) and the Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) are hungry for energy and expensive, and are not suitable to be used extensively in every sensor. But localisation is essential in WSN, which should be implemented with help of some beacons that are equipped with GPS or GSM. A mobile beacon (MB) is the replacement of many static beacons; it is movable and flexible and can be powerful so that some heavy computational mathematical methods (such as probability and graph theory) could be applied in an algorithm of localisation. The walking path of a MB will determine the rate of coverage and accuracy of localisation. The static path is planned before action and is suitable for regular terrain; whereas, the dynamic path is decided in real-time action depending on the demand of unknown sensors, and is more efficient than the static path. Concentrating on the algorithm of dynamic path to reach a better result in terms of accuracy, coverage, and trajectory of localisation in WSN, a framework of dynamic path of mobile beacon (DPMB) is proposed first, and then reinforcement learning (RL) is fit to the DPMB as the inner controller to improve the performance. Finally, direction is employed to assist the MB to find a better next position instead of distance in the DPMB. Simulations demonstrate that the performance is improved gradually

    Localisation of sensor nodes with hybrid measurements in wireless sensor networks

    Localisation in wireless networks faces challenges such as high levels of signal attenuation and unknown path-loss exponents, especially in urban environments. In response to these challenges, this paper proposes solutions to localisation problems in noisy environments. A new observation model for localisation of static nodes is developed based on hybrid measurements, namely angle of arrival and received signal strength data. An approach for localisation of sensor nodes is proposed as a weighted linear least squares algorithm. The unknown path-loss exponent associated with the received signal strength is estimated jointly with the coordinates of the sensor nodes via the generalised pattern search method. The algorithm’s performance validation is conducted both theoretically and by simulation. A theoretical mean square error expression is derived, followed by the derivation of the linear Cramer-Rao bound which serves as a benchmark for the proposed location estimators. Accurate results are demonstrated with 25%–30% improvement in estimation accuracy with a weighted linear least squares algorithm as compared to linear least squares solution

    Increasing the Efficiency of 6-DoF Visual Localization Using Multi-Modal Sensory Data

    Localization is a key requirement for mobile robot autonomy and human-robot interaction. Vision-based localization is accurate and flexible, however, it incurs a high computational burden which limits its application on many resource-constrained platforms. In this paper, we address the problem of performing real-time localization in large-scale 3D point cloud maps of ever-growing size. While most systems using multi-modal information reduce localization time by employing side-channel information in a coarse manner (eg. WiFi for a rough prior position estimate), we propose to inter-weave the map with rich sensory data. This multi-modal approach achieves two key goals simultaneously. First, it enables us to harness additional sensory data to localise against a map covering a vast area in real-time; and secondly, it also allows us to roughly localise devices which are not equipped with a camera. The key to our approach is a localization policy based on a sequential Monte Carlo estimator. The localiser uses this policy to attempt point-matching only in nodes where it is likely to succeed, significantly increasing the efficiency of the localization process. The proposed multi-modal localization system is evaluated extensively in a large museum building.     Cooperative Vehicle Tracking in Large Environments

    Vehicle position tracking and prediction over large areas is of significant importance in many industrial applications, such as mining operations. In a small area, this can be easily achieved by providing vehicles with a constant communication link to a control centre and having the vehicles broadcast their position. The problem changes dramatically when vehicles operate within a large environment of potentially hundreds of square kilometres and in difficult terrain. This thesis presents algorithms for cooperative tracking of vehicles based on a vehicle motion model that incorporates the properties of the working area, and information collected by infrastructure collection points and other mobile agents. The probabilistic motion prediction approach provides long-term estimates of vehicle positions using motion profiles built for the particular environment and considering the vehicle stopping probability. A limited number of data collection points distributed around the field are used to update the position estimates, with negative information also used to improve the estimation. The thesis introduces the concept of observation harvesting, a process in which peer-to-peer communication between vehicles allows egocentric position updates and inter-vehicle measurements to be relayed among vehicles and finally conveyed to the collection points for an improved position estimate. It uses a store-and-synchronise concept to deal with intermittent communication and aims to disseminate data in an opportunistic manner. A nonparametric filtering algorithm for cooperative tracking is proposed to incorporate the information harvested, including the negative, relative, and time delayed observations. An important contribution of this thesis is to enable the optimisation of fleet scheduling when full coverage networks are not available or feasible. The proposed approaches were validated with comprehensive experimental results using data collected from a large-scale mining operation
