    Autonomous 3D Exploration of Large Structures Using an UAV Equipped with a 2D LIDAR

    This paper addressed the challenge of exploring large, unknown, and unstructured industrial environments with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The resulting system combined well-known components and techniques with a new manoeuvre to use a low-cost 2D laser to measure a 3D structure. Our approach combined frontier-based exploration, the Lazy Theta* path planner, and a flyby sampling manoeuvre to create a 3D map of large scenarios. One of the novelties of our system is that all the algorithms relied on the multi-resolution of the octomap for the world representation. We used a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HitL) simulation environment to collect accurate measurements of the capability of the open-source system to run online and on-board the UAV in real-time. Our approach is compared to different reference heuristics under this simulation environment showing better performance in regards to the amount of explored space.     A Survey on Passing-through Control of Multi-Robot Systems in Cluttered Environments

    This survey presents a comprehensive review of various methods and algorithms related to passing-through control of multi-robot systems in cluttered environments. Numerous studies have investigated this area, and we identify several avenues for enhancing existing methods. This survey describes some models of robots and commonly considered control objectives, followed by an in-depth analysis of four types of algorithms that can be employed for passing-through control: leader-follower formation control, multi-robot trajectory planning, control-based methods, and virtual tube planning and control. Furthermore, we conduct a comparative analysis of these techniques and provide some subjective and general evaluations.Comment: 18 pages, 19 figure

    Smooth 3D Path Planning by Means of Multiobjective Optimization for Fixed-Wing UAVs

    [EN] Demand for 3D planning and guidance algorithms is increasing due, in part, to the increase in unmanned vehicle-based applications. Traditionally, two-dimensional (2D) trajectory planning algorithms address the problem by using the approach of maintaining a constant altitude. Addressing the problem of path planning in a three-dimensional (3D) space implies more complex scenarios where maintaining altitude is not a valid approach. The work presented here implements an architecture for the generation of 3D flight paths for fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The aim is to determine the feasible flight path by minimizing the turning effort, starting from a set of control points in 3D space, including the initial and final point. The trajectory generated takes into account the rotation and elevation constraints of the UAV. From the defined control points and the movement constraints of the UAV, a path is generated that combines the union of the control points by means of a set of rectilinear segments and spherical curves. However, this design methodology means that the problem does not have a single solution; in other words, there are infinite solutions for the generation of the final path. For this reason, a multiobjective optimization problem (MOP) is proposed with the aim of independently maximizing each of the turning radii of the path.     Optimisation-based verification process of obstacle avoidance systems for unmanned vehicles

    This thesis deals with safety verification analysis of collision avoidance systems for unmanned vehicles. The safety of the vehicle is dependent on collision avoidance algorithms and associated control laws, and it must be proven that the collision avoidance algorithms and controllers are functioning correctly in all nominal conditions, various failure conditions and in the presence of possible variations in the vehicle and operational environment. The current widely used exhaustive search based approaches are not suitable for safety analysis of autonomous vehicles due to the large number of possible variations and the complexity of algorithms and the systems. To address this topic, a new optimisation-based verification method is developed to verify the safety of collision avoidance systems. The proposed verification method formulates the worst case analysis problem arising the verification of collision avoidance systems into an optimisation problem and employs optimisation algorithms to automatically search the worst cases. Minimum distance to the obstacle during the collision avoidance manoeuvre is defined as the objective function of the optimisation problem, and realistic simulation consisting of the detailed vehicle dynamics, the operational environment, the collision avoidance algorithm and low level control laws is embedded in the optimisation process. This enables the verification process to take into account the parameters variations in the vehicle, the change of the environment, the uncertainties in sensors, and in particular the mismatching between model used for developing the collision avoidance algorithms and the real vehicle. It is shown that the resultant simulation based optimisation problem is non-convex and there might be many local optima. To illustrate and investigate the proposed optimisation based verification process, the potential field method and decision making collision avoidance method are chosen as an obstacle avoidance candidate technique for verification study. Five benchmark case studies are investigated in this thesis: static obstacle avoidance system of a simple unicycle robot, moving obstacle avoidance system for a Pioneer 3DX robot, and a 6 Degrees of Freedom fixed wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle with static and moving collision avoidance algorithms. It is proven that although a local optimisation method for nonlinear optimisation is quite efficient, it is not able to find the most dangerous situation. Results in this thesis show that, among all the global optimisation methods that have been investigated, the DIviding RECTangle method provides most promising performance for verification of collision avoidance functions in terms of guaranteed capability in searching worst scenarios

    A Novel Vector-Field-Based Motion Planning Algorithm for 3D Nonholonomic Robots

    This paper focuses on the motion planning for mobile robots in 3D, which are modelled by 6-DOF rigid body systems with nonholonomic kinematics constraints. We not only specify the target position, but also bring in the requirement of the heading direction at the terminal time, which gives rise to a new and more challenging 3D motion planning problem. The proposed planning algorithm involves a novel velocity vector field (VF) over the workspace, and by following the VF, the robot can be navigated to the destination with the specified heading direction. In order to circumvent potential collisions with obstacles and other robots, a composite VF is designed by composing the navigation VF and an additional VF tangential to the boundary of the dangerous area. Moreover, we propose a priority-based algorithm to deal with the motion coupling issue among multiple robots. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to verify the theoretical results

    Recursive Rewarding Modified Adaptive Cell Decomposition (RR-MACD): A Dynamic Path Planning Algorithm for UAVs

    [EN] A relevant task in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) flight is path planning in 3D environments. This task must be completed using the least possible computing time. The aim of this article is to combine methodologies to optimise the task in time and offer a complete 3D trajectory. The flight environment will be considered as a 3D adaptive discrete mesh, where grids are created with minimal refinement in the search for collision-free spaces. The proposed path planning algorithm for UAV saves computational time and memory resources compared with classical techniques. With the construction of the discrete meshing, a cost response methodology is applied as a discrete deterministic finite automaton (DDFA).     Cooperation of unmanned systems for agricultural applications: A case study in a vineyard

    Fully-autonomous vehicles, both aerial and ground, could provide great benefits in the Agriculture 4.0 framework when operating within cooperative architectures, thanks to their ability to tackle difficult tasks, particularly within complex irregular and unstructured scenarios such as vineyards on sloped terrains. A decentralised multi-phase approach has been proposed as an alternative to more common cooperative schemes. When perennial crops are considered, it is advantageous to build a simplified geometrical (and georeferenced) crops model, which can be identified by using 3D point clouds acquired during apriori explorative missions by unmanned aerial vehicles. This model can be used to plan the tasks to be performed within the crops by the in-field aerial and ground drones. In this companion paper, the proposed strategy is applied to a specific case study involving a vineyard on a sloped terrain, located in the Barolo region in Piedmont, Italy. Ad-hoc technologies and guidance, navigation and control algorithms were designed and implemented. The main objectives were to improve the autonomous driving capabilities of the drones involved and to automate the process of retrieving low-complexity maps from the data collected with preliminary remote sensing missions to make them available for the autonomous navigation by a quadrotor and an unmanned 4-wheel steering ground vehicle within the vine rows. Preliminary results highlight the benefits achievable by exploiting the tailored technologies selected and applied to improve each of the analysed mission phases

    Path Planning Based on Parametric Curves

    Parametric curves are extensively used in engineering. The most commonly used parametric curves are, Bézier, B-splines, (NURBSs), and rational Bézier. Each and every one of them has special features, being the main difference between them the complexity of their mathematical definition. While Bézier curves are the simplest ones, B-splines or NURBSs are more complex. In mobile robotics, two main problems have been addressed with parametric curves. The first one is the definition of an initial trajectory for a mobile robot from a start location to a goal. The path has to be a continuous curve, smooth and easy to manipulate, and the properties of the parametric curves meet these requirements. The second one is the modification of the initial trajectory in real time attending to the dynamic properties of the environment. Parametric curves are capable of enhancing the trajectories produced by path planning algorithms adapting them to the kinematic properties of the robot. In order to avoid obstacles, the shape modification of parametric curves is required. In this chapter, an algorithm is proposed for computing an initial Bézier trajectory of a mobile robot and subsequently modifies it in real time in order to avoid obstacles in a dynamic environment

    Motion Planning in Artificial and Natural Vector Fields

    This dissertation advances the field of autonomous vehicle motion planning in various challenging environments, ranging from flows and planetary atmospheres to cluttered real-world scenarios. By addressing the challenge of navigating environmental flows, this work introduces the Flow-Aware Fast Marching Tree algorithm (FlowFMT*). This algorithm optimizes motion planning for unmanned vehicles, such as UAVs and AUVs, navigating in tridimensional static flows. By considering reachability constraints caused by vehicle and flow dynamics, flow-aware neighborhood sets are found and used to reduce the number of calls to the cost function. The method computes feasible and optimal trajectories from start to goal in challenging environments that may contain obstacles or prohibited regions (e.g., no-fly zones). The method is extended to generate a vector field-based policy that optimally guides the vehicle to a given goal. Numerical comparisons with state-of-the-art control solvers demonstrate the method\u27s simplicity and accuracy. In this dissertation, the proposed sampling-based approach is used to compute trajectories for an autonomous semi-buoyant solar-powered airship in the challenging Venusian atmosphere, which is characterized by super-rotation winds. A cost function that incorporates the energetic balance of the airship is proposed to find energy-efficient trajectories. This cost function combines the main forces acting on the vehicle: weight, buoyancy, aerodynamic lift and drag, and thrust. The FlowFMT* method is also extended to consider the possibility of battery depletion due to thrust or battery charging due to solar energy and tested in this Venus atmosphere scenario. Simulations showcase how the airship selects high-altitude paths to minimize energy consumption and maximize battery recharge. They also show the airship sinking down and drifting with the wind at the altitudes where it is fully buoyant. For terrestrial applications, this dissertation finally introduces the Sensor-Space Lattice (SSLAT) motion planner, a real-time obstacle avoidance algorithm for autonomous vehicles and mobile robots equipped with planar range finders. This planner uses a lattice to tessellate the area covered by the sensor and to rapidly compute collision-free paths in the robot surroundings by optimizing a cost function. The cost function guides the vehicle to follow an artificial vector field that encodes the desired vehicle path. This planner is evaluated in challenging, cluttered static environments, such as warehouses and forests, and in the presence of moving obstacles, both in simulations and real experiments. Our results show that our algorithm performs collision checking and path planning faster than baseline methods. Since the method can have sequential or parallel implementations, we also compare the two versions of SSLAT and show that the run-time for its parallel implementation, which is independent of the number and shape of the obstacles found in the environment, provides a significant speedup due to the independent collision checks
