    RFID-Based Media Usage Panels in Real-World Settings

    Traditional paper-based longitudinal or cross section panel surveys, used for market research are time and cost consuming and can suffer from contaminating effects like social desirability bias or respondent conditioning. Electronic data capture methods can improve the time and cost efficiency of market research panels. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology allows a seamless and non-intrusive integration of information systems into everyday life environments. This enables the automated electronic acquisition of media usage data, without direct interference with the media consumption and thus without the contaminating effects of traditional panel surveys. Consequently, we introduce an RFID-based prototype system called MUSE (Media Usage in Supportive Environments) that supports automatic measurements of print media usage in public environments. MUSE was tested in an initial field study over the course of six weeks in the waiting room of a German medical practice. The study showed that MUSE could monitor the usage of print media, laid out for waiting patients, autonomously and with minimal errors. Furthermore, the RFID technology was perceived as nonintrusive. This study is the first to show how RFID enhanced real world settings can be used for nonintrusive media usage analysis in real life. Based on the findings we derive recommendations for future research for RFID supported media usage analysis

    The increasing number of mobile vendors releas- ing NFC-enabled devices to the market and their prominent adoption has moved this technology from a niche product to a product with a large market-share. NFC facilitates natural interactions between digital world and physical learning environments. The scaffolding of learning ecologies is a key aspect for lifelong learners in their challenge to integrate learning activities into busy daily life. The contribution of this manuscript is twofold: first, a review of scientific litera- ture in which NFC has been used with a direct or indirect purpose to learn is presented, and potential uses for learners are classified according to their type of interaction; based on these findings the NFC MediaPlayer is presented as an instantiation of an ecology of resources (EoR) in a lifelong learning context. Finally, shortcomings and best practices are highlighted in the conclusions, and future work is discussed

    Patterns currently play an important role in modern information systems (IS) development and their use has mainly been restricted to the design and implementation phases of the development lifecycle. Given the increasing significance of business modelling in IS development, patterns have the potential of providing a viable solution for promoting reusability of recurrent generalized models in the very early stages of development. As a statement of research-in-progress this paper focuses on business process patterns and proposes an initial methodological framework for the discovery and reuse of business process patterns within the IS development lifecycle. The framework borrows ideas from the domain engineering literature and proposes the use of semantics to drive both the discovery of patterns as well as their reuse

    The Economics of the Internet of Things in the Global South

    While the Internet of Things (IoT) is not new, its key components are becoming increasingly affordable now, which makes the technology extremely attractive for the Global South. By collecting data from various IoT sources, combining them with data from other sources and using big data analytics, decisions can be made and actions can be taken that can have important economic, social, ecological and environmental implications in these countries. The most visible impacts of the IoT in these countries include improvements in agricultural and food systems, enhancement of environmental security and resource conservation, achievement of better healthcare, public health and medicine, and enhancement of the efficiency of key industries. This paper provides an overview of how the IoT is currently being used in the Global South. It also discusses the opportunities and challenges that IoT initiatives present there. The analysis indicates that the IoT may address some of the institutional bottlenecks, technological challenges and key sources of high transaction costs. On the other hand, various sources of underdevelopment may act as barriers to full utilisation of the IoT

    SiMoNa: A Proof-of-concept Domain-Specific Modeling Language for IoT Infographics

    The Internet of Things (IoT)is a prominent concept in academic and technology business discourse in recent times reflecting a wider trend to connect physical objects to the Internet and to each other. This idea of connect things started in the beginning of the 2008 through RFID. But after the open hardware initiatives (as Arduino), it gained more visibility and access to experiments with sensors in the environment. The IoT is already generating an unprecedented volume of data in greater varieties and higher velocities. Making sense of such data is an emerging and significant challenge. Infographics are visual representations that provide a visual space for end users to compare and analyze data, information, and knowledge in a more efficient form than traditional forms. The nature of IoT requires a continuum modification in how end users see information to achieve such efficiency gains. Conceptualizing and implementing infographics in an IoT system can thus require significant planning and development for both data scientists, graphic designers and developers resulting in both costs in terms of time and effort. To address this problem, this paper presents SiMoNa, a domain-specific modeling language (DSML) to create, connect, interact, and build interactive infographic presentations for IoT systems efficiently based on the model-driven development (MDD) paradigm.     In recent years, the number of network-enabled smartphones everywhere has been increasing fast. With the rapid expansion of the Internet, people have been trying to reduce manual intervention as much as possible. A variety of sensors are embedded in today’s smartphones which make interfacing with the outside world, easy. The majority of the smartphone users have Android as the operating system. So in the world of smartphone Android has the largest platform as compared to other operating systems. So in this project work Android is used to automate some of the simple day to day manual activities. The thesis represents the design and development of simple android applications which are used to automate simple tasks. All the applications are compatible with Android 2.1 onwards. The designs of the proposed applications are on top of a Web interface which uses RESTful API as the communication protocol between client applications and web service. The applications take much advantage of sensors and techniques pre-installed in Android smartphones. The proposed applications follow optimizations according to the best practices recommended by Google, to increase user experience and reduce power consumption. The first one is PVSys, an Android application which gives the details of equipment required for solar pump installation at user’s backyard or a full solar panel installation at user’s house. The second one is BizCard, which automates the task of storing user’s business cards in digital form and retrieving the contacts when required. The third application, Auto Attendance Manager, automates the task of taking attendance for the teachers and lecturers without the aid of any external device. The Auto Attendance Manager can be integrated easily with the present application of the Institute.Automation of simple things with Android becomes easy. Moreover, a layman can work on Android interface since it is easy to implement and design the layouts.
