    Integrating IoT technologies for an "intelligent" safety management in the process industry

    Abstract IoT (Internet of Things) technologies are wide spreading in several industrial sector due to a combination of increasing technical performance together with decreasing purchase prices: thus, new tools are been evaluated for adoption in new fields of application, like safety at work. In recent years, several projects and prototypes as well as industrial solutions have been developed using IOT technologies especially to dynamically managing safety levels at complex workplaces. The aim of this study is to describe a prototype system where the so called Smart Objects (SOs) - integrating different IoT technologies- interact in a working environment through a digital platform for managing different type of hazards ā€“ e.g. involving safety of plants as well as workers - usually influencing safety levels especially in process industry. The fields of application of the proposed system vary from tracking periodic mandatory maintenance and analyzing aging of equipment, processing or containing hazardous materials, to remote tracking of hazardous conditions of workers

    An integrated information management model for proactive prevention of struck-by-falling-object accidents on construction sites

    The construction industry is one of the most hazardous industries in many countries. Struck-by-falling-object accidents are not given adequate attention even though they are of great importance on construction sites. The objective of this paper is to analyze the proactively preventive information requirement of struck-by-falling-object accidents and propose an integrated information management model using a ZigBee RFID sensor network to fulfill these requirements. First, the frequency of particular type of objects is analyzed based on vast historical accident cases. Next, this paper analyzes the proactively preventive information requirement of struck-by-falling-object accidents and brought forth an integrated information management model. Furthermore, considering the crucial and controllable objects, an integrated information management model is proposed. This study would provide a possible approach for tracking struck-by-falling-object accidents based on real-time information for proactive prevention and could serve as a foundation for further study.     Disaster management is a complex practice that relies on access to and the usability of critical information to develop strategies for effective decision-making. The emergence of wearable internet of things (IoT) technology has attracted the interests of several major industries, making it one of the fastest-growing technologies to date. This thesis asks, How can disaster management incorporate wearable IoT technology in operations and decision-making practices in disaster response? How IoT is applied in other prominent industries, including construction, manufacturing and distribution, the Department of Defense, and public safety, provides a basis for furthering its application to challenges affecting agency coordination. The critical needs of disaster intelligence in the context of hurricanes, structural collapses, and wildfires are scrutinized to identify gaps that wearable technology could address in terms of information-sharing in multi-agency coordination and the decision-making practices that routinely occur in disaster response. Last, the specifics of wearable technology from the perspective of the private consumer and commercial industry illustrate its potential to improve disaster response but also acknowledge certain limitations including technical capabilities and information privacy and security.Civilian, Virginia Beach Fire Department / FEMA - USAR VATF-2Approved for public release.     The role of Industry 4.0 enabling technologies for safety management: A systematic literature review

    Abstract Innovations introduced during the Industry 4.0 era consist in the integration of the so called "nine pillars of technologies" in manufacturing, transforming the conventional factory in a smart factory. The aim of this study is to investigate enabling technologies of Industry 4.0, focusing on technologies that have a greater impact on safety management. Main characteristics of such technologies will be identified and described according to their use in an industrial environment. In order to do this, we chose a systematic literature review (SLR) to answer the research question in a comprehensively way. Results show that articles can be grouped according to different criteria. Moreover, we found that Industry 4.0 can increase safety levels in warehouse and logistic, as well as several solutions are available for building sector
