IVOA Recommendation: Universal Worker Service Pattern Version 1.0
The Universal Worker Service (UWS) pattern defines how to manage asynchronous
execution of jobs on a service. Any application of the pattern defines a family
of related services with a common service contract. Possible uses of the
pattern are also described
Hypermedia-based discovery for source selection using low-cost linked data interfaces
Evaluating federated Linked Data queries requires consulting multiple sources on the Web. Before a client can execute queries, it must discover data sources, and determine which ones are relevant. Federated query execution research focuses on the actual execution, while data source discovery is often marginally discussed-even though it has a strong impact on selecting sources that contribute to the query results. Therefore, the authors introduce a discovery approach for Linked Data interfaces based on hypermedia links and controls, and apply it to federated query execution with Triple Pattern Fragments. In addition, the authors identify quantitative metrics to evaluate this discovery approach. This article describes generic evaluation measures and results for their concrete approach. With low-cost data summaries as seed, interfaces to eight large real-world datasets can discover each other within 7 minutes. Hypermedia-based client-side querying shows a promising gain of up to 50% in execution time, but demands algorithms that visit a higher number of interfaces to improve result completeness
Platforms and Protocols for the Internet of Things
Building a general architecture for the Internet of Things (IoT) is a very complex task, exacerbated by the extremely large variety of devices, link layer technologies, and services that may be involved in such a system. In this paper, we identify the main blocks of a generic IoT architecture, describing their features and requirements, and analyze the most common approaches proposed in the literature for each block. In particular, we compare three of the most important communication technologies for IoT purposes, i.e., REST, MQTT, and AMQP, and we also analyze three IoT platforms: openHAB, Sentilo, and Parse. The analysis will prove the importance of adopting an integrated approach that jointly addresses several issues and is able to flexibly accommodate the requirements of the various elements of the system. We also discuss a use case which illustrates the design challenges and the choices to make when selecting which protocols and technologies to use
Introduction to Microservice API Patterns (MAP)
The Microservice API Patterns (MAP) language and supporting website premiered under this name at Microservices 2019. MAP distills proven, platform- and technology-independent solutions to recurring (micro-)service design and interface specification problems such as finding well-fitting service granularities, rightsizing message representations, and managing the evolution of APIs and their implementations. In this paper, we motivate the need for such a pattern language, outline the language organization and present two exemplary patterns describing alternative options for representing nested data. We also identify future research and development directions
Application Protocols enabling Internet of Remote Things via Random Access Satellite Channels
Nowadays, Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) traffic rate
is increasing at a fast pace. The use of satellites is expected to play a large
role in delivering such a traffic. In this work, we investigate the use of two
of the most common M2M/IoT protocols stacks on a satellite Random Access (RA)
channel, based on DVB-RCS2 standard. The metric under consideration is the
completion time, in order to identify the protocol stack that can provide the
best performance level
Improving Runtime Overheads for detectEr
We design monitor optimisations for detectEr, a runtime-verification tool
synthesising systems of concurrent monitors from correctness properties for
Erlang programs. We implement these optimisations as part of the existing tool
and show that they yield considerably lower runtime overheads when compared to
