    Error management in ATLAS TDAQ : an intelligent systems approach

    This thesis is concerned with the use of intelligent system techniques (IST) within a large distributed software system, specifically the ATLAS TDAQ system which has been developed and is currently in use at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics(CERN). The overall aim is to investigate and evaluate a range of ITS techniques in order to improve the error management system (EMS) currently used within the TDAQ system via error detection and classification. The thesis work will provide a reference for future research and development of such methods in the TDAQ system. The thesis begins by describing the TDAQ system and the existing EMS, with a focus on the underlying expert system approach, in order to identify areas where improvements can be made using IST techniques. It then discusses measures of evaluating error detection and classification techniques and the factors specific to the TDAQ system. Error conditions are then simulated in a controlled manner using an experimental setup and datasets were gathered from two different sources. Analysis and processing of the datasets using statistical and ITS techniques shows that clusters exists in the data corresponding to the different simulated errors. Different ITS techniques are applied to the gathered datasets in order to realise an error detection model. These techniques include Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), Support Vector Machines (SVMs) and Cartesian Genetic Programming (CGP) and a comparison of the respective advantages and disadvantages is made. The principle conclusions from this work are that IST can be successfully used to detect errors in the ATLAS TDAQ system and thus can provide a tool to improve the overall error management system. It is of particular importance that the IST can be used without having a detailed knowledge of the system, as the ATLAS TDAQ is too complex for a single person to have complete understanding of. The results of this research will benefit researchers developing and evaluating IST techniques in similar large scale distributed systems

    Aneesah: a novel methodology and algorithms for sustained dialogues and query refinement in natural language interfaces to databases

    This thesis presents the research undertaken to develop a novel approach towards the development of a text-based Conversational Natural Language Interface to Databases, known as ANEESAH. Natural Language Interfaces to Databases (NLIDBs) are computer applications, which replace the requirement for an end user to commission a skilled programmer to query a database by using natural language. The aim of the proposed research is to investigate the use of a Natural Language Interface to Database (NLIDB) capable of conversing with users to automate the query formulation process for database information retrieval. Historical challenges and limitations have prevented the wider use of NLIDB applications in real-life environments. The challenges relevant to the scope of proposed research include the absence of flexible conversation between NLIDB applications and users, automated database query building from multiple dialogues and flexibility to sustain dialogues for information refinement. The areas of research explored include; NLIDBs, conversational agents (CAs), natural language processing (NLP) techniques, artificial intelligence (AI), knowledge engineering, and relational databases. Current NLIDBs do not have conversational abilities to sustain dialogues, especially with regards to information required for dynamic query formulation. A novel approach, ANEESAH is introduced to deal with these challenges. ANEESAH was developed to allow users to communicate using natural language to retrieve information from a relational database. ANEESAH can interact with the users conversationally and sustain dialogues to automate the query formulation and information refinement process. The research and development of ANEESAH steered the engineering of several novel NLIDB components such as a CA implemented NLIDB framework, a rule-based CA that combines pattern matching and sentence similarity techniques, algorithms to engage users in conversation and support sustained dialogues for information refinement. Additional components of the proposed framework include a novel SQL query engine for the dynamic formulation of queries to extract database information and perform querying the query operations to support the information refinement. Furthermore, a generic evaluation methodology combining subjective and objective measures was introduced to evaluate the implemented conversational NLIDB framework. Empirical end user evaluation was also used to validate the components of the implemented framework. The evaluation results demonstrated ANEESAH produced the desired database information for users over a set of test scenarios. The evaluation results also revealed that the proposed framework components can overcome the challenges of sustaining dialogues, information refinement and querying the query operations

    Grifon: a graphical interface to an object oriented database

    The aim of the research outlined in this thesis is to establish what type of interface would be most suitable for object oriented databases. In particular it examines how graphical interface technologies might be used to present the database in a clearer form. In support of the research, a prototype interface system has also been developed to a commercial database to illustrate the practicality of the development of such an interface, and the increased effectiveness of the resultant system. The thesis outlines the features provided by the interface, the benefits accrued from such a system, and the problems associated with its development. Finally, it examines how such a system fits into the current work being carried out in the area of user interaction with databases

    NASA Langley Research Center sponsored a Workshop on NASA Research in Software Reuse on November 17-18, 1988 in Melbourne, Florida, hosted by Software Productivity Solutions, Inc. Participants came from four NASA centers and headquarters, eight NASA contractor companies, and three research institutes. Presentations were made on software reuse research at the four NASA centers; on Eli, the reusable software synthesis system designed and currently under development by SPS; on Space Station Freedom plans for reuse; and on other reuse research projects. Wind power is one of the most promising renewable energy technologies. In particular, the development of offshore wind power is increasing rapidly due to large areas of wind resources. However, offshore wind is encountering big challenges such as effective use of wind power plants, reduced cost of installation as well as operation and maintenance (O&M). Improved O&M is likely to reduce the hazard exposure of the employees, increase income, and support offshore activities more efficiently. In order to optimize the O&M, the importance of data exchange and knowledge sharing within the offshore wind industry must be realized. With more data available and accessible, it is possible to make better decisions, and thereby improve the recovery rates and reduce the operational costs. This dissertation proposes a holistic way of improving remote operations for offshore wind farms by using data integration. Particularly, semantics and integration aspects of data integration are investigated. The research looks at both theoretical foundations and practical implementations. As the outcome of the research, a framework for data integration of offshore wind farms has been developed. The framework consists of three main components: the semantic model, the data source handling, and the information provisioning. In particular, an offshore wind ontology has been proposed to explore the semantics of wind data and enable knowledge sharing and data exchange. The ontology is aligned with semantic sensor network ontology to support management of metadata in smart grids. That is to say, the ontology-based approach has been proven to be useful in managing data and metadata in the offshore wind and in smart grids. A quality-based approach is proposed to manage, select, and provide the most suitable data source for users based upon their quality requirements and an approach to formally describing derived data in ontologies is investigated

    Conflict Detection and Resolution for Future Air Transportation Management

    With a Free Flight policy, the emphasis for air traffic control is shifting from active control to passive air traffic management with a policy of intervention by exception. Aircraft will be allowed to fly user preferred routes, as long as safety Alert Zones are not violated. If there is a potential conflict, two (or more) aircraft must be able to arrive at a solution for conflict resolution without controller intervention. Thus, decision aid tools are needed in Free Flight to detect and resolve conflicts, and several problems must be solved to develop such tools. In this report, we analyze and solve problems of proximity management, conflict detection, and conflict resolution under a Free Flight policy. For proximity management, we establish a system based on Delaunay Triangulations of aircraft at constant flight levels. Such a system provides a means for analyzing the neighbor relationships between aircraft and the nearby free space around air traffic which can be utilized later in conflict resolution. For conflict detection, we perform both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional analyses based on the penetration of the Protected Airspace Zone. Both deterministic and non-deterministic analyses are performed. We investigate several types of conflict warnings including tactical warnings prior to penetrating the Protected Airspace Zone, methods based on the reachability overlap of both aircraft, and conflict probability maps to establish strategic Alert Zones around aircraft
