    The Effects of JIT on the Development of Productivity Norms

    Low inventory, or just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing systems, enjoy increasing application worldwide, yet the behavioral effects of such systems remain largely unexplored. Operations Research (OR) models of low inventory systems typically make a simplifying assumption that individual worker processing times are independent random variables. This leads to predictions that low-inventory systems will exhibit production interruptions. Yet empirical results suggest that low-inventory systems do not exhibit the predicted productivity losses. This paper develops a model integrating feedback, goal-setting, group cohesiveness, task norms, and peer pressure to predict how individual behavior may adjust to alleviate production interruptions in low-inventory systems. In doing so we integrate previous research on the development of task norms. Findings suggest that low-inventory systems induce individual and group responses that cause behavioral changes that mitigate production interruptions

    Hierarchical location-allocation models for congested systems

    In this paper we address the issue of locating hierarchical facilities in the presence of congestion. Two hierarchical models are presented, where lower level servers attend requests first, and then, some of the served customers are referred to higher level servers. In the first model, the objective is to find the minimum number of servers and their locations that will cover a given region with a distance or time standard. The second model is cast as a Maximal Covering Location formulation. A heuristic procedure is then presented together with computational experience.     A methodology for the decomposition of discrete event models for parallel simulation

    Parallel simulation has presented the possibility of performing high-speed simulation. However, when attempting to make a link between the requirements of parallel simulation and discrete event simulation used in commercial areas such as manufacturing, a major problem arises. This lies in the decomposition of the simulation into a series of concurrently executing objects. Using the activity cycle diagram simulation technique as an illustrative example, this paper suggests a solution to this decomposition problem. This is discussed within the context of providing a conceptually seamless methodology for translating simulation models into a form which can exploit the benefits of parallel computing

    Taylorism, targets and the pursuit of quantity and quality by call centre management

    The paper locates the rise of the call centre within the context of the development of Taylorist methods and technological change in office work in general. Managerial utilisation of targets to impose and measure employees' quantitative and qualitative performance is analysed in four case-study organisations. The paper concludes that call centre work reflects a pardigmic re-configuration of customer servicing operations, and that the continuing application of Taylorist methods appears likely
