Restricted Mobility Improves Delay-Throughput Trade-offs in Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks
In this paper we revisit two classes of mobility models which are widely used to repre-sent users ’ mobility in wireless networks: Random Waypoint (RWP) and Random Direction (RD). For both models we obtain systems of partial differential equations which describe the evolution of the users ’ distribution. For the RD model, we show how the equations can be solved analytically both in the stationary and transient regime adopting standard mathematical techniques. Our main contributions are i) simple expressions which relate the transient dura-tion to the model parameters; ii) the definition of a generalized random direction model whose stationary distribution of mobiles in the physical space corresponds to an assigned distribution
Towards a Queueing-Based Framework for In-Network Function Computation
We seek to develop network algorithms for function computation in sensor
networks. Specifically, we want dynamic joint aggregation, routing, and
scheduling algorithms that have analytically provable performance benefits due
to in-network computation as compared to simple data forwarding. To this end,
we define a class of functions, the Fully-Multiplexible functions, which
includes several functions such as parity, MAX, and k th -order statistics. For
such functions we exactly characterize the maximum achievable refresh rate of
the network in terms of an underlying graph primitive, the min-mincut. In
acyclic wireline networks, we show that the maximum refresh rate is achievable
by a simple algorithm that is dynamic, distributed, and only dependent on local
information. In the case of wireless networks, we provide a MaxWeight-like
algorithm with dynamic flow splitting, which is shown to be throughput-optimal
Delay-aware Backpressure Routing Using Graph Neural Networks
We propose a throughput-optimal biased backpressure (BP) algorithm for
routing, where the bias is learned through a graph neural network that seeks to
minimize end-to-end delay. Classical BP routing provides a simple yet powerful
distributed solution for resource allocation in wireless multi-hop networks but
has poor delay performance. A low-cost approach to improve this delay
performance is to favor shorter paths by incorporating pre-defined biases in
the BP computation, such as a bias based on the shortest path (hop) distance to
the destination. In this work, we improve upon the widely-used metric of hop
distance (and its variants) for the shortest path bias by introducing a bias
based on the link duty cycle, which we predict using a graph convolutional
neural network. Numerical results show that our approach can improve the delay
performance compared to classical BP and existing BP alternatives based on
pre-defined bias while being adaptive to interference density. In terms of
complexity, our distributed implementation only introduces a one-time overhead
(linear in the number of devices in the network) compared to classical BP, and
a constant overhead compared to the lowest-complexity existing bias-based BP

Opportunistic Networks: Present Scenario- A Mirror Review
Opportunistic Network is form of Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) and regarded as extension to Mobile Ad Hoc Network. OPPNETS are designed to operate especially in those environments which are surrounded by various issues like- High Error Rate, Intermittent Connectivity, High Delay and no defined route between source to destination node. OPPNETS works on the principle of “Store-and-Forward” mechanism as intermediate nodes perform the task of routing from node to node. The intermediate nodes store the messages in their memory until the suitable node is not located in communication range to transfer the message to the destination. OPPNETs suffer from various issues like High Delay, Energy Efficiency of Nodes, Security, High Error Rate and High Latency. The aim of this research paper is to overview various routing protocols available till date for OPPNETs and classify the protocols in terms of their performance. The paper also gives quick review of various Mobility Models and Simulation tools available for OPPNETs simulation
Integrating wireless technologies into intra-vehicular communication
With the emergence of connected and autonomous vehicles, sensors are increasingly deployed within car. Traffic generated by these sensors congest traditional intra-vehicular networks, such as CAN buses. Furthermore, the large amount of wires needed to connect sensors makes it hard to design cars in a modular way. These limitations have created impetus to use wireless technologies to support intra-vehicular communication. In this dissertation, we tackle the challenge of designing and evaluating data collection protocols for intra-car networks that can operate reliably and efficiently under dynamic channel conditions.
First, we evaluate the feasibility of deploying an intra-car wireless network based on the Backpressure Collection Protocol (BCP), which is theoretically proven to be throughput-optimal.
We uncover a surprising behavior in which, under certain dynamic channel conditions, the average packet delay of BCP decreases with the traffic load. We propose and analyze a queueing-theoretic model to shed light into the observed phenomenon. As a solution, we propose a new protocol, called replication-based LIFO-backpressure (RBL). Analytical and simulation results indicate that RBL dramatically reduces the delay of BCP at low load, while maintaining its high throughput performance.
Next, we propose and implement a hybrid wired/wireless architecture, in which each node is connected to either a wired interface or a wireless interface or both. We propose a new protocol, called Hybrid-Backpressure Collection Protocol (Hybrid-BCP), for the intra-car hybrid networks. Our testbed implementation, based on CAN and ZigBee transceivers, demonstrates the load balancing and routing functionalities of Hybrid-BCP and its resilience to DoS attacks. We further provide simulation results, obtained based on real intra-car RSSI traces, showing that Hybrid-BCP can achieve the same performance as a tree-based protocol while reducing the radio transmission power by a factor of 10.
Finally, we present TeaCP, a prototype Toolkit for the evaluation and analysis of Collection Protocols in both simulation and experimental environments. TeaCP evaluates a wide range of standard performance metrics, such as reliability, throughput, and latency. TeaCP further allows visualization of routes and network topology evolution. Through simulation of an intra-car WSN and real lab experiments, we demonstrate the functionality of TeaCP for comparing different collection protocols
Cross-layer signalling and middleware: a survey for inelastic soft real-time applications in MANETs
This paper provides a review of the different cross-layer design and protocol tuning approaches that may be used to meet a growing need to support inelastic soft real-time streams in MANETs. These streams are characterised by critical timing and throughput requirements and low packet loss tolerance levels. Many cross-layer approaches exist either for provision of QoS to soft real-time streams in static wireless networks or to improve the performance of real and non-real-time transmissions in MANETs. The common ground and lessons learned from these approaches, with a view to the potential provision of much needed support to real-time applications in MANETs, is therefore discussed
Socio-economic aware data forwarding in mobile sensing networks and systems
The vision for smart sustainable cities is one whereby urban sensing is core to optimising city
operation which in turn improves citizen contentment. Wireless Sensor Networks are envisioned
to become pervasive form of data collection and analysis for smart cities but deployment of
millions of inter-connected sensors in a city can be cost-prohibitive. Given the ubiquity and
ever-increasing capabilities of sensor-rich mobile devices, Wireless Sensor Networks with Mobile
Phones (WSN-MP) provide a highly flexible and ready-made wireless infrastructure for future
smart cities. In a WSN-MP, mobile phones not only generate the sensing data but also relay the
data using cellular communication or short range opportunistic communication. The largest
challenge here is the efficient transmission of potentially huge volumes of sensor data over
sometimes meagre or faulty communications networks in a cost-effective way.
This thesis investigates distributed data forwarding schemes in three types of WSN-MP: WSN
with mobile sinks (WSN-MS), WSN with mobile relays (WSN-HR) and Mobile Phone Sensing
Systems (MPSS). For these dynamic WSN-MP, realistic models are established and distributed
algorithms are developed for efficient network performance including data routing and forwarding,
sensing rate control and and pricing. This thesis also considered realistic urban sensing
issues such as economic incentivisation and demonstrates how social network and mobility
awareness improves data transmission. Through simulations and real testbed experiments, it
is shown that proposed algorithms perform better than state-of-the-art schemes.Open Acces
Resource-efficient strategies for mobile ad-hoc networking
The ubiquity and widespread availability of wireless mobile devices with ever increasing
inter-connectivity (e. g. by means of Bluetooth, WiFi or UWB) have led to new and emerging
next generation mobile communication paradigms, such as the Mobile Ad-hoc NETworks
(MANETs). MANETs are differentiated from traditional mobile systems by their unique properties,
e. g. unpredictable nodal location, unstable topology and multi-hop packet relay. The
success of on-going research in communications involving MANETs has encouraged their applications
in areas with stringent performance requirements such as the e-healthcare, e. g. to
connect them with existing systems to deliver e-healthcare services anytime anywhere. However,
given that the capacity of mobile devices is restricted by their resource constraints (e. g.
computing power, energy supply and bandwidth), a fundamental challenge in MANETs is how
to realize the crucial performance/Quality of Service (QoS) expectations of communications in
a network of high dynamism without overusing the limited resources.
A variety of networking technologies (e. g. routing, mobility estimation and connectivity
prediction) have been developed to overcome the topological instability and unpredictability
and to enable communications in MANETs with satisfactory performance or QoS. However,
these technologies often feature a high consumption of power and/or bandwidth, which makes
them unsuitable for resource constrained handheld or embedded mobile devices. In particular,
existing strategies of routing and mobility characterization are shown to achieve fairly
good performance but at the expense of excessive traffic overhead or energy consumption. For
instance, existing hybrid routing protocols in dense MANETs are based in two-dimensional organizations
that produce heavy proactive traffic. In sparse MANETs, existing packet delivery
strategy often replicates too many copies of a packet for a QoS target. In addition, existing
tools for measuring nodal mobility are based on either the GPS or GPS-free positioning systems,
which incur intensive communications/computations that are costly for battery-powered
terminals. There is a need to develop economical networking strategies (in terms of resource
utilization) in delivering the desired performance/soft QoS targets.
The main goal of this project is to develop new networking strategies (in particular, for
routing and mobility characterization) that are efficient in terms of resource consumptions while
being effective in realizing performance expectations for communication services (e. g. in the
scenario of e-healthcare emergency) with critical QoS requirements in resource-constrained
MANETs.
The main contributions of the thesis are threefold:
(1) In order to tackle the inefficient bandwidth utilization of hybrid service/routing discovery
in dense MANETs, a novel "track-based" scheme is developed. The scheme deploys
a one-dimensional track-like structure for hybrid routing and service discovery. In comparison
with existing hybrid routing/service discovery protocols that are based on two-dimensional
structures, the track-based scheme is more efficient in terms of traffic overhead (e. g. about 60%
less in low mobility scenarios as shown in Fig. 3.4). Due to the way "provocative tracks" are
established, the scheme has also the capability to adapt to the network traffic and mobility for
a better performance.
(2) To minimize the resource utilization of packet delivery in sparse MANETs where wireless
links are intermittently connected, a store-and-forward based scheme, "adaptive multicopy
routing", was developed for packet delivery in sparse mobile ad-hoc networks. Instead
of relying on the source to control the delivery overhead as in the conventional multi-copy
protocols, the scheme allows each intermediate node to independently decide whether to forward
a packet according to the soft QoS target and local network conditions. Therefore, the
scheme can adapt to varying networking situations that cannot be anticipated in conventional
source-defined strategies and deliver packets for a specific QoS targets using minimum traffic
overhead.

(3) The important issue of mobility measurement that imposes heavy communication/computation
burdens on a mobile is addressed with a set of resource-efficient "GPS-free" soluti ons,
which provide mobility characterization with minimal resource utilization for ranging and signalling
by making use of the information of the time-varying ranges between neighbouring
mobile nodes (or groups of mobile nodes). The range-based solutions for mobility characterization
consist of a new mobility metric for network-wide performance measurement, two
velocity estimators for approximating the inter-node relative speeds, and a new scheme for
characterizing the nodal mobility. The new metric and its variants are capable of capturing the
mobility of a network as well as predicting the performance. The velocity estimators are used to
measure the speed and orientation of a mobile relative to its neighbours, given the presence of a
departing node. Based on the velocity estimators, the new scheme for mobility characterization
is capable of characterizing the mobility of a node that are associated with topological stability,
i. e. the node's speeds, orientations relative to its neighbouring nodes and its past epoch time.
