Asymptotic optimality of maximum pressure policies in stochastic processing networks

We consider a class of stochastic processing networks. Assume that the networks satisfy a complete resource pooling condition. We prove that each maximum pressure policy asymptotically minimizes the workload process in a stochastic processing network in heavy traffic. We also show that, under each quadratic holding cost structure, there is a maximum pressure policy that asymptotically minimizes the holding cost. A key to the optimality proofs is to prove a state space collapse result and a heavy traffic limit theorem for the network processes under a maximum pressure policy. We extend a framework of Bramson [Queueing Systems Theory Appl. 30 (1998) 89--148] and Williams [Queueing Systems Theory Appl. 30 (1998b) 5--25] from the multiclass queueing network setting to the stochastic processing network setting to prove the state space collapse result and the heavy traffic limit theorem. The extension can be adapted to other studies of stochastic processing networks.Comment: Published in at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/08-AAP522 the Annals of Applied Probability (http://www.imstat.org/aap/) by the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (http://www.imstat.org

Performance analysis of a dynamic query processing scheme

Traditional query optimizers produce a fixed query evaluation plan based on assumptions about data distribution and processor workloads. However, these assumptions may not hold at query execution time. In this paper, we propose a dynamic query processing scheme and we present the performance results obtained by simulation of a queueing network model of the proposed software architecture

Analytical tools, methods and techniques for assessing the design and performance of the space shuttle orbiter data processing system (DPS) are provided. The computer data processing network is evaluated in the key areas of queueing behavior synchronization and network reliability. The structure of the data processing network is described as well as the system operation principles and the network configuration. The characteristics of the computer systems are indicated. System reliability measures are defined and studied. System and network invulnerability measures are computed. Communication path and network failure analysis techniques are included

During the pasttwo decades queueing network models have proven to be a versatile tool for computer system and computer communication system performance evaluation. This chapter provides a survey of th field with a particular emphasis on applications. We start with a brief historical retrospective which also servesto introduce the majr issues and application areas. Formal results for product form queuenig networks are reviewed with particular emphasis on the implications for computer systems modeling. Computation algorithms, sensitivity analysis and optimization techniques are among the topics covered. Many of the important applicationsof queueing networks are not amenableto exact analysis and an (often confusing) array of approximation methods have been developed over the years. A taxonomy of approximation methods is given and used as the basis for for surveing the major approximation methods that have been studied. The application of queueing network to a number of areas is surveyed, including computer system cpacity planning, packet switching networks, parallel processing, database systems and availability modeling.

A PC-based data acquisition system for sub-atomic physics measurements

Modern particle physics measurements are heavily dependent upon automated data acquisition systems (DAQ) to collect and process experiment-generated information. One research group from the University of Saskatchewan utilizes a DAQ known as the Lucid data acquisition and analysis system. This thesis examines the project undertaken to upgrade the hardware and software components of Lucid. To establish the effectiveness of the system upgrades, several performance metrics were obtained including the system's dead time and input/output bandwidth.Hardware upgrades to Lucid consisted of replacing its aging digitization equipment with modern, faster-converting Versa-Module Eurobus (VME) technology and replacing the instrumentation processing platform with common, PC hardware. The new processor platform is coupled to the instrumentation modules via a fiber-optic bridging-device, the sis1100/3100 from Struck Innovative Systems. The software systems of Lucid were also modified to follow suit with the new hardware. Originally constructed to utilize a proprietary real-time operating system, the data acquisition application was ported to run under the freely available Real-Time Executive for Multiprocessor Systems (RTEMS). The device driver software provided with sis1100/3100 interface also had to be ported for use under the RTEMS-based system. Performance measurements of the upgraded DAQ indicate that the dead time has been reduced from being on the order of milliseconds to being on the order of several tens of microseconds. This increased capability means that Lucid's users may acquire significantly more data in a shorter period of time, thereby decreasing both the statistical uncertainties and data collection duration associated with a given experiment

Modeling and analysis to improve the quality of healthcare services

For many healthcare services or medical procedures, patients have extensive risk of complication or face death when treatment is delayed. When a queue is formed in such a situation, it is very important to assess the suffering and risk faced by patients in queue and plan sufficient medical capabilities in advance to address the concerns. As the diversity of care settings increases, congestion in facilities causes many patients to unnecessarily spend extra days in intensive care facilities. Performance evaluation of current healthcare service systems using queueing theory gains more and more importance because of patient flows and systems complexity. Queueing models have been used in handsome number of healthcare studies, but the incorporation of blocking is still limited. In this research work, we study an efficient two-stage multi-class queueing network system with blocking and phase-type service time distribution to analyze such congestion processes. We also consider parallel servers at each station and first-come-first-serve non-preemptive service discipline are used to improve the performance of healthcare service systems

Disengaged Scheduling for Fair, Protected Access to Fast Computational Accelerators

Today’s operating systems treat GPUs and other computational accelerators as if they were simple devices, with bounded and predictable response times. With accelerators assuming an increasing share of the workload on modern machines, this strategy is already problematic, and likely to become untenable soon. If the operating system is to enforce fair sharing of the machine, it must assume responsibility for accelerator scheduling and resource management. Fair, safe scheduling is a particular challenge on fast accelerators, which allow applications to avoid kernel-crossing overhead by interacting directly with the device. We propose a disengaged scheduling strategy in which the kernel intercedes between applications and the accelerator on an infrequent basis, to monitor their use of accelerator cycles and to determine which applications should be granted access over the next time interval. Our strategy assumes a well defined, narrow interface exported by the accelerator. We build upon such an interface, systematically inferred for the latest Nvidia GPUs. We construct several example schedulers, including Disengaged Timeslice with overuse control that guarantees fairness and Disengaged Fair Queueing that is effective in limiting resource idleness, but probabilistic. Both schedulers ensure fair sharing of the GPU, even among uncooperative or adversarial applications; Disengaged Fair Queueing incurs a 4 % overhead on average (max 18%) compared to direct devic
