    Analysis of an M/M/1 Queue With Working Vacation and Vacation Interruption

    In this paper, an M/M/1 queue with working vacation and vacation interruption is investigated. The server is supposed to interrupt the vacation and return back to the normal working period, if there are at least N customers waiting in the system at a service completion instant during the working vacation period. Otherwise, the server continues the vacation until the system is nonempty after a vacation ends or there are at least N customers after a service ends. In terms of the quasi birth and death process and matrix-geometric solution method, we obtain the distributions for the stationary queue length. Moreover, we demonstrate stochastic decomposition structures of the queue length and waiting time, and obtain the distributions of the additional queue length and additional delay for the case N = 2 . Finally, numerical examples are presented

    Stationary Analysis of a Multiserver queue with multiple working vacation and impatient customers

    We consider an M/M/c queue with multiple working vacation and impatient customers. The server serves the customers at a lower rate rather than completely halts the service during this working vacation period. The impatience of the customer’s arises when they arrive during the working vacation period, where the service rate of the customer’s is lower than the normal busy period. The queue is analyzed for multiple working vacation policies. The policy of a MWV demands the server to keep taking vacation until it finds at least a single customer waiting in the system at an instant vacation completion. On returning of the server from his vacation along with finding at least one customer in the system, the server changes its service rate, thereby giving rise to a non-vacation period; otherwise the server immediately goes for another WV. We formulate the probability generating function for the number of customers present when the server is both in a service period as well as in a working vacation period. We further derive a closed-form solution for various performance measures such as the mean queue length and the mean waiting time. The stochastic decomposition properties are verified for the model

    On M/G/1 system under NT policies with breakdowns, startup and closedown

    AbstractThis paper studies the vacation policies of an M/G/1 queueing system with server breakdowns, startup and closedown times, in which the length of the vacation period is controlled either by the number of arrivals during the vacation period, or by a timer. After all the customers are served in the queue exhaustively, the server is shutdown (deactivates) by a closedown time. At the end of the shutdown time, the server immediately takes a vacation and operates two different policies: (i) The server reactivates as soon as the number of arrivals in the queue reaches to a predetermined threshold N or the waiting time of the leading customer reaches T units; and (ii) The server reactivates as soon as the number of arrivals in the queue reaches to a predetermined threshold N or T time units have elapsed since the end of the closedown time. If the timer expires or the number of arrivals exceeds the threshold N, then the server reactivates and requires a startup time before providing the service until the system is empty. If some customers arrive during this closedown time, the service is immediately started without leaving for a vacation and without a startup time. We analyze the system characteristics for each scheme

    This paper analyzes an unreliable MX/G(M/H)/1MX/G(M/H)/1 retrial system with vacation. We present closed-form expressions for the important performance indicators of the system, and derive the optimal vacation policies for minimizing the average waiting time of orbiting customers. The performance metrics relevant for helpline services are developed. Numerical experiments are conducted to examine the effect of vacation policy on the queue length and busy period of the system

    Analysis of a polling system modeling QoS differentiation in WLANs

    This paper investigates a polling system with a random polling scheme, a 1-limited service discipline and deterministic service requirement modeling WLANs with QoS differentation capability. The system contains high and low priority queues that are distinguished via the probability of being served next. We propose a new iteration algorithm to approximate the waiting time of customers in the high and low priority queues. As shown by simulation results, our approximation is accurate for light to moderately loaded networks

    Queueing models for appointment-driven systems.

    Many service systems are appointment-driven. In such systems, customers make an appointment and join an external queue(also referred to as the “waiting list”). At the appointed date, the customer arrives at the service facility, joins an internal queue and receives service during a service session. After service, the customer leaves the system. Important measures of interest include the size of the waiting list, the waiting time at the service facility and server overtime. These performance measures may support strategic decisionmaking concerning server capacity (e.g. how often, when and for how long should a server be online). We develop an ew model to assess these performance measures.
