Enhanced web-based summary generation for search.
After a user types in a search query on a major search engine, they are presented with a number of search results. Each search result is made up of a title, brief text summary and a URL. It is then the user\u27s job to select documents for further review. Our research aims to improve the accuracy of users selecting relevant documents by improving the way these web pages are summarized. Improvements in accuracy will lead to time improvements and user experience improvements. We propose ReClose, a system for generating web document summaries. ReClose generates summary content through combining summarization techniques from query-biased and query-independent summary generation. Query-biased summaries generally provide query terms in context. Query-independent summaries focus on summarizing documents as a whole. Combining these summary techniques led to a 10% improvement in user decision making over Google generated summaries. Color-coded ReClose summaries provide keyword usage depth at a glance and also alert users to topic departures. Color-coding further enhanced ReClose results and led to a 20% improvement in user decision making over Google generated summaries. Many online documents include structure and multimedia of various forms such as tables, lists, forms and images. We propose to include this structure in web page summaries. We found that the expert user was insignificantly slowed in decision making while the majority of average users made decisions more quickly using summaries including structure without any decrease in decision accuracy. We additionally extended ReClose for use in summarizing large numbers of tweets in tracking flu outbreaks in social media. The resulting summaries have variable length and are effective at summarizing flu related trends. Users of the system obtained an accuracy of 0.86 labeling multi-tweet summaries. This showed that the basis of ReClose is effective outside of web documents and that variable length summaries can be more effective than fixed length. Overall the ReClose system provides unique summaries that contain more informative content than current search engines produce, highlight the results in a more meaningful way, and add structure when meaningful. The applications of ReClose extend far beyond search and have been demonstrated in summarizing pools of tweets
L-Eval: Instituting Standardized Evaluation for Long Context Language Models
Recently, there has been growing interest in extending the context length of
instruction-following models in order to effectively process single-turn long
input (e.g. summarizing a paper) and conversations with more extensive
histories. While proprietary models such as GPT-4 and Claude have demonstrated
considerable advancements in handling tens of thousands of tokens of context,
open-sourced models are still in the early stages of experimentation. It also
remains unclear whether developing these long context models can offer
substantial gains on practical downstream tasks over retrieval-based methods or
models simply trained on chunked contexts. To address this challenge, we
propose to institute standardized evaluation for long context language models.
Concretely, we develop L-Eval which contains 411 long documents and over 2,000
query-response pairs manually annotated and checked by the authors encompassing
areas such as law, finance, school lectures, lengthy conversations, news,
long-form novels, and meetings. L-Eval also adopts diverse evaluation methods
and instruction styles, enabling a more reliable assessment of Long Context
Language Models (LCLMs). Our findings indicate that while open-source models
typically lag behind their commercial counterparts, they still exhibit
impressive performance. LLaMA2 achieves the best results (win 45\% vs
turbo-16k) on open-ended tasks with only 4k context length and ChatGLM2
achieves the best results on closed-ended tasks with 8k input tokens. We
release our new evaluation suite, code, and all generation results including
predictions from all open-sourced LCLMs, GPT4-32k, Cluade-100k at

Trade-off among timeliness, messages and accuracy for large-Ssale information management
The increasing amount of data and the number of nodes in large-scale environments
require new techniques for information management. Examples of such environments
are the decentralized infrastructures of Computational Grid and Computational
Cloud applications. These large-scale applications need different kinds
of aggregated information such as resource monitoring, resource discovery or economic
information. The challenge of providing timely and accurate information
in large scale environments arise from the distribution of the information. Reasons
for delays in distributed information system are a long information transmission
time due to the distribution, churn and failures.
A problem of large applications such as peer-to-peer (P2P) systems is the increasing
retrieval time of the information due to the decentralization of the data
and the failure proneness. However, many applications need a timely information
provision. Another problem is an increasing network consumption when the application
scales to millions of users and data. Using approximation techniques allows
reducing the retrieval time and the network consumption. However, the usage of
approximation techniques decreases the accuracy of the results. Thus, the remaining
problem is to offer a trade-off in order to solve the conflicting requirements of
fast information retrieval, accurate results and low messaging cost.
Our goal is to reach a self-adaptive decision mechanism to offer a trade-off
among the retrieval time, the network consumption and the accuracy of the result.
Self-adaption enables distributed software to modify its behavior based on
changes in the operating environment. In large-scale information systems that use
hierarchical data aggregation, we apply self-adaptation to control the approximation
used for the information retrieval and reduces the network consumption and
the retrieval time. The hypothesis of the thesis is that approximation techniquescan reduce the retrieval time and the network consumption while guaranteeing an
accuracy of the results, while considering user’s defined priorities.
First, this presented research addresses the problem of a trade-off among a
timely information retrieval, accurate results and low messaging cost by proposing
a summarization algorithm for resource discovery in P2P-content networks.
After identifying how summarization can improve the discovery process, we propose
an algorithm which uses a precision-recall metric to compare the accuracy
and to offer a user-driven trade-off. Second, we propose an algorithm that applies
a self-adaptive decision making on each node. The decision is about the pruning
of the query and returning the result instead of continuing the query. The pruning
reduces the retrieval time and the network consumption at the cost of a lower accuracy
in contrast to continuing the query. The algorithm uses an analytic hierarchy
process to assess the user’s priorities and to propose a trade-off in order to satisfy
the accuracy requirements with a low message cost and a short delay.
A quantitative analysis evaluates our presented algorithms with a simulator,
which is fed with real data of a network topology and the nodes’ attributes. The
usage of a simulator instead of the prototype allows the evaluation in a large scale
of several thousands of nodes. The algorithm for content summarization is evaluated
with half a million of resources and with different query types. The selfadaptive
algorithm is evaluated with a simulator of several thousands of nodes
that are created from real data. A qualitative analysis addresses the integration
of the simulator’s components in existing market frameworks for Computational
Grid and Cloud applications.
The proposed content summarization algorithm reduces the information retrieval
time from a logarithmic increase to a constant factor. Furthermore, the
message size is reduced significantly by applying the summarization technique.
For the user, a precision-recall metric allows defining the relation between the retrieval
time and the accuracy. The self-adaptive algorithm reduces the number of
messages needed from an exponential increase to a constant factor. At the same
time, the retrieval time is reduced to a constant factor under an increasing number
of nodes. Finally, the algorithm delivers the data with the required accuracy
adjusting the depth of the query according to the network conditions.

Answer Summarization for Technical Queries: Benchmark and New Approach
Prior studies have demonstrated that approaches to generate an answer summary
for a given technical query in Software Question and Answer (SQA) sites are
desired. We find that existing approaches are assessed solely through user
studies. There is a need for a benchmark with ground truth summaries to
complement assessment through user studies. Unfortunately, such a benchmark is
non-existent for answer summarization for technical queries from SQA sites. To
fill the gap, we manually construct a high-quality benchmark to enable
automatic evaluation of answer summarization for technical queries for SQA
sites. Using the benchmark, we comprehensively evaluate the performance of
existing approaches and find that there is still a big room for improvement.
Motivated by the results, we propose a new approach TechSumBot with three key
modules:1) Usefulness Ranking module, 2) Centrality Estimation module, and 3)
Redundancy Removal module. We evaluate TechSumBot in both automatic (i.e.,
using our benchmark) and manual (i.e., via a user study) manners. The results
from both evaluations consistently demonstrate that TechSumBot outperforms the
best performing baseline approaches from both SE and NLP domains by a large
margin, i.e., 10.83%-14.90%, 32.75%-36.59%, and 12.61%-17.54%, in terms of
ROUGE-1, ROUGE-2, and ROUGE-L on automatic evaluation, and 5.79%-9.23% and
17.03%-17.68%, in terms of average usefulness and diversity score on human
evaluation. This highlights that the automatic evaluation of our benchmark can
uncover findings similar to the ones found through user studies. More
importantly, automatic evaluation has a much lower cost, especially when it is
used to assess a new approach. Additionally, we also conducted an ablation
study, which demonstrates that each module in TechSumBot contributes to
boosting the overall performance of TechSumBot.Comment: Accepted by ASE 202
