An efficient query optimization strategy for spatio-temporal queries in video databases
Cataloged from PDF version of article. The interest for multimedia database management systems has grown rapidly due to the need for the storage of huge volumes of multimedia data in computer systems. An important building block of a multimedia database system is the query processor, and a query optimizer embedded to the query processor is needed to answer user queries efficiently. Query optimization problem has been widely studied for conventional database systems; however it is a new research area for multimedia database systems. Due to the differences in query processing strategies, query optimization techniques used in multimedia database systems are different from those used in traditional databases. In this paper, a query optimization strategy is proposed for processing spatio-temporal queries in video database systems. The proposed strategy includes reordering algorithms to be applied on query execution tree. The performance results obtained by testing the reordering algorithms on different query sets are also presented. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved
Evolutionary Algorithms for Query Op-timization in Distributed Database Sys-tems: A review
Evolutionary Algorithms are bio-inspired optimization problem-solving approaches that exploit principles of biological evolution. , such as natural selection and genetic inheritance. This review paper provides the application of evolutionary and swarms intelligence based query optimization strategies in Distributed Database Systems. The query optimization in a distributed environment is challenging task and hard problem. However, Evolutionary approaches are promising for the optimization problems. The problem of query optimization in a distributed database environment is one of the complex problems. There are several techniques which exist and are being used for query optimization in a distributed database. The intention of this research is to focus on how bio-inspired computational algorithms are used in a distributed database environment for query optimization. This paper provides working of bio-inspired computational algorithms in distributed database query optimization which includes genetic algorithms, ant colony algorithm, particle swarm optimization and Memetic Algorithms
Algebraic optimization of recursive queries
Over the past few years, much attention has been paid to deductive databases. They offer a logic-based interface, and allow formulation of complex recursive queries. However, they do not offer appropriate update facilities, and do not support existing applications. To overcome these problems an SQL-like interface is required besides a logic-based interface.\ud

In the PRISMA project we have developed a tightly-coupled distributed database, on a multiprocessor machine, with two user interfaces: SQL and PRISMAlog. Query optimization is localized in one component: the relational query optimizer. Therefore, we have defined an eXtended Relational Algebra that allows recursive query formulation and can also be used for expressing executable schedules, and we have developed algebraic optimization strategies for recursive queries. In this paper we describe an optimization strategy that rewrites regular (in the context of formal grammars) mutually recursive queries into standard Relational Algebra and transitive closure operations. We also describe how to push selections into the resulting transitive closure operations.\ud

The reason we focus on algebraic optimization is that, in our opinion, the new generation of advanced database systems will be built starting from existing state-of-the-art relational technology, instead of building a completely new class of systems
Neo: A Learned Query Optimizer
Query optimization is one of the most challenging problems in database
systems. Despite the progress made over the past decades, query optimizers
remain extremely complex components that require a great deal of hand-tuning
for specific workloads and datasets. Motivated by this shortcoming and inspired
by recent advances in applying machine learning to data management challenges,
we introduce Neo (Neural Optimizer), a novel learning-based query optimizer
that relies on deep neural networks to generate query executions plans. Neo
bootstraps its query optimization model from existing optimizers and continues
to learn from incoming queries, building upon its successes and learning from
its failures. Furthermore, Neo naturally adapts to underlying data patterns and
is robust to estimation errors. Experimental results demonstrate that Neo, even
when bootstrapped from a simple optimizer like PostgreSQL, can learn a model
that offers similar performance to state-of-the-art commercial optimizers, and
in some cases even surpass them
Improving SQL Server Perform
With the development of client server technology and multilayer architectures the systems ef-ficiency issue has been increasingly discussed. Lacking knowledge in optimization methods and tools offered by DBMS's, database administrators and developers of applications based on Microsoft technologies cannot optimally design and service performing systems. In this article we review the objectives that should be considered (in order) to improve performance of SQL Server instances and we describe the techniques used to optimize queries. Also, we explain and illustrate the new optimization features offered by SQL Server 2008.Query, Optimization, SQL Server
Open issues in semantic query optimization in relational DBMS
After two decades of research into Semantic Query Optimization (SQO) there is clear agreement as to the efficacy of SQO. However, although there are some experimental implementations there are still no commercial implementations. We
first present a thorough analysis of research into SQO. We identify three problems which inhibit the effective use of SQO in Relational Database Management Systems(RDBMS). We then propose solutions to these problems and describe first steps towards the implementation of an effective semantic query optimizer for relational databases
