ABC-CNN: An Attention Based Convolutional Neural Network for Visual Question Answering
We propose a novel attention based deep learning architecture for visual
question answering task (VQA). Given an image and an image related natural
language question, VQA generates the natural language answer for the question.
Generating the correct answers requires the model's attention to focus on the
regions corresponding to the question, because different questions inquire
about the attributes of different image regions. We introduce an attention
based configurable convolutional neural network (ABC-CNN) to learn such
question-guided attention. ABC-CNN determines an attention map for an
image-question pair by convolving the image feature map with configurable
convolutional kernels derived from the question's semantics. We evaluate the
ABC-CNN architecture on three benchmark VQA datasets: Toronto COCO-QA, DAQUAR,
and VQA dataset. ABC-CNN model achieves significant improvements over
state-of-the-art methods on these datasets. The question-guided attention
generated by ABC-CNN is also shown to reflect the regions that are highly
relevant to the questions
LiveSketch: Query Perturbations for Guided Sketch-based Visual Search
LiveSketch is a novel algorithm for searching large image collections using
hand-sketched queries. LiveSketch tackles the inherent ambiguity of sketch
search by creating visual suggestions that augment the query as it is drawn,
making query specification an iterative rather than one-shot process that helps
disambiguate users' search intent. Our technical contributions are: a triplet
convnet architecture that incorporates an RNN based variational autoencoder to
search for images using vector (stroke-based) queries; real-time clustering to
identify likely search intents (and so, targets within the search embedding);
and the use of backpropagation from those targets to perturb the input stroke
sequence, so suggesting alterations to the query in order to guide the search.
We show improvements in accuracy and time-to-task over contemporary baselines

Multimedia Semantic Integrity Assessment Using Joint Embedding Of Images And Text
Real world multimedia data is often composed of multiple modalities such as
an image or a video with associated text (e.g. captions, user comments, etc.)
and metadata. Such multimodal data packages are prone to manipulations, where a
subset of these modalities can be altered to misrepresent or repurpose data
packages, with possible malicious intent. It is, therefore, important to
develop methods to assess or verify the integrity of these multimedia packages.
Using computer vision and natural language processing methods to directly
compare the image (or video) and the associated caption to verify the integrity
of a media package is only possible for a limited set of objects and scenes. In
this paper, we present a novel deep learning-based approach for assessing the
semantic integrity of multimedia packages containing images and captions, using
a reference set of multimedia packages. We construct a joint embedding of
images and captions with deep multimodal representation learning on the
reference dataset in a framework that also provides image-caption consistency
scores (ICCSs). The integrity of query media packages is assessed as the
inlierness of the query ICCSs with respect to the reference dataset. We present
the MultimodAl Information Manipulation dataset (MAIM), a new dataset of media
packages from Flickr, which we make available to the research community. We use
both the newly created dataset as well as Flickr30K and MS COCO datasets to
quantitatively evaluate our proposed approach. The reference dataset does not
contain unmanipulated versions of tampered query packages. Our method is able
to achieve F1 scores of 0.75, 0.89 and 0.94 on MAIM, Flickr30K and MS COCO,
