IMPROVING SMART GRID SECURITY USING MERKLE TREES
Abstract—Presently nations worldwide are starting to convert their aging electrical power infrastructures into modern, dynamic power grids. Smart Grid offers much in the way of efficiencies and robustness to the electrical power grid, however its heavy reliance on communication networks will leave it more vulnerable to attack than present day grids. This paper looks at the threat to public key cryptography systems from a fully realized quantum computer and how this could impact the Smart Grid. We argue for the use of Merkle Trees in place of public key cryptography for authentication of devices in wireless mesh networks that are used in Smart Grid applications

Graphene-Based Acousto-Optic Sensors with Vibrating Resonance Energy Transfer and Applications
Graphene as a two-dimensional planar material has numerous advantages for realizing high-performance nano-electromechanical systems (NEMS) such as nanoscale sensors including strain sensors, optical modulators or energy harvesters. Large Young’s modulus (1 TPa for single layer graphene), ultra-low weight, low residual stress and large breaking strength properties are important properties as two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin resonators. Graphene resonators are recently utilized for low complexity design of nanoscale acousto-optic sensors based on a novel theoretical model describing vibrating Förster resonance energy transfer (VFRET) mechanism. Proposed system combines the advantages of graphene with quantum dots (QDs) as donor and acceptor pairs with broad absorption spectrum, large cross-sections, tunable emission spectra, size-dependent emission wavelength, high photochemical stability and improved quantum yield. Device structure supporting wide-band resonance frequencies including acoustic and ultrasound ranges promises high-performance applications for challenging environments. Remote sensors and acousto-optic communication channels are formed for in-body applications, wireless body area sensor networks (WBASNs), space and interplanetary systems, microfluidics and visible light communication (VLC)-based architectures
Modeling Maintenance Productivity Measurement of Engineering Production Systems: Discrete Event Simulation Approach
Modeling and simulation of industrial information communication systems and networks is one of the
major concerns of productivity engineers for the establishment of productivity standards in virtually
all functional areas of an industrial organization. Maintenance function is one of such areas that have
always engaged the attention of engineering productivity practitioners. However, one of the basic prob-
lems is the difficulty in setting up integrated but easy and practical measurement schemes. Even where
the measures are set up, the approaches to measurement sometimes are conflicting. Therefore the need
for an integrated approach to optimize the basket of parameters measured remains.
In this chapter the author attempts to identify approaches in integrated and systematic maintenance
productivity measurement and create models for optimising total productivity in maintenance systems.
Visual yardstick, utility, queuing systems and simulations approaches for measurement of maintenance
productivity are all discussed with a particular focus on markov chain approach for stochastic break-
downs in repairable systems.. The chapter also shows how understanding the impact of plant failure and
repair/service distributions assists in providing measures for maintenance productivity using discrete
event system simulation
