Quantization and Compressive Sensing
Quantization is an essential step in digitizing signals, and, therefore, an
indispensable component of any modern acquisition system. This book chapter
explores the interaction of quantization and compressive sensing and examines
practical quantization strategies for compressive acquisition systems.
Specifically, we first provide a brief overview of quantization and examine
fundamental performance bounds applicable to any quantization approach. Next,
we consider several forms of scalar quantizers, namely uniform, non-uniform,
and 1-bit. We provide performance bounds and fundamental analysis, as well as
practical quantizer designs and reconstruction algorithms that account for
quantization. Furthermore, we provide an overview of Sigma-Delta
() quantization in the compressed sensing context, and also
discuss implementation issues, recovery algorithms and performance bounds. As
we demonstrate, proper accounting for quantization and careful quantizer design
has significant impact in the performance of a compressive acquisition system.Comment: 35 pages, 20 figures, to appear in Springer book "Compressed Sensing

Balanced Quantization: An Effective and Efficient Approach to Quantized Neural Networks
Quantized Neural Networks (QNNs), which use low bitwidth numbers for
representing parameters and performing computations, have been proposed to
reduce the computation complexity, storage size and memory usage. In QNNs,
parameters and activations are uniformly quantized, such that the
multiplications and additions can be accelerated by bitwise operations.
However, distributions of parameters in Neural Networks are often imbalanced,
such that the uniform quantization determined from extremal values may under
utilize available bitwidth. In this paper, we propose a novel quantization
method that can ensure the balance of distributions of quantized values. Our
method first recursively partitions the parameters by percentiles into balanced
bins, and then applies uniform quantization. We also introduce computationally
cheaper approximations of percentiles to reduce the computation overhead
introduced. Overall, our method improves the prediction accuracies of QNNs
without introducing extra computation during inference, has negligible impact
on training speed, and is applicable to both Convolutional Neural Networks and
Recurrent Neural Networks. Experiments on standard datasets including ImageNet
and Penn Treebank confirm the effectiveness of our method. On ImageNet, the
top-5 error rate of our 4-bit quantized GoogLeNet model is 12.7\%, which is
superior to the state-of-the-arts of QNNs
Depth map compression via 3D region-based representation
In 3D video, view synthesis is used to create new virtual views between
encoded camera views. Errors in the coding of the depth maps introduce
geometry inconsistencies in synthesized views. In this paper, a new 3D plane
representation of the scene is presented which improves the performance of
current standard video codecs in the view synthesis domain. Two image segmentation
algorithms are proposed for generating a color and depth segmentation.
Using both partitions, depth maps are segmented into regions without
sharp discontinuities without having to explicitly signal all depth edges. The
resulting regions are represented using a planar model in the 3D world scene.
This 3D representation allows an efficient encoding while preserving the 3D
characteristics of the scene. The 3D planes open up the possibility to code
multiview images with a unique representation.Postprint (author's final draft
