Regular Cost Functions, Part I: Logic and Algebra over Words
The theory of regular cost functions is a quantitative extension to the
classical notion of regularity. A cost function associates to each input a
non-negative integer value (or infinity), as opposed to languages which only
associate to each input the two values "inside" and "outside". This theory is a
continuation of the works on distance automata and similar models. These models
of automata have been successfully used for solving the star-height problem,
the finite power property, the finite substitution problem, the relative
inclusion star-height problem and the boundedness problem for monadic-second
order logic over words. Our notion of regularity can be -- as in the classical
theory of regular languages -- equivalently defined in terms of automata,
expressions, algebraic recognisability, and by a variant of the monadic
second-order logic. These equivalences are strict extensions of the
corresponding classical results. The present paper introduces the cost monadic
logic, the quantitative extension to the notion of monadic second-order logic
we use, and show that some problems of existence of bounds are decidable for
this logic. This is achieved by introducing the corresponding algebraic
formalism: stabilisation monoids.Comment: 47 page
Advances and applications of automata on words and trees : abstracts collection
From 12.12.2010 to 17.12.2010, the Dagstuhl Seminar 10501 "Advances and Applications of Automata on Words and Trees" was held in Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz Center for Informatics. During the seminar, several participants presented their current research, and ongoing work and open problems were discussed. Abstracts of the presentations given during the seminar as well as abstracts of seminar results and ideas are put together in this paper. The first section describes the seminar topics and goals in general. Links to extended abstracts or full papers are provided, if available
Advances and applications of automata on words and trees : executive summary
Seminar: 10501 - Advances and Applications of Automata on Words and Trees. The aim of the seminar was to discuss and systematize the recent fast progress in automata theory and to identify important directions for future research. For this, the seminar brought together more than 40 researchers from automata theory and related fields of applications. We had 19 talks of 30 minutes and 5 one-hour lectures leaving ample room for discussions. In the following we describe the topics in more detail
Reasoning about transfinite sequences
We introduce a family of temporal logics to specify the behavior of systems
with Zeno behaviors. We extend linear-time temporal logic LTL to authorize
models admitting Zeno sequences of actions and quantitative temporal operators
indexed by ordinals replace the standard next-time and until future-time
operators. Our aim is to control such systems by designing controllers that
safely work on -sequences but interact synchronously with the system in
order to restrict their behaviors. We show that the satisfiability problem for
the logics working on -sequences is EXPSPACE-complete when the
integers are represented in binary, and PSPACE-complete with a unary
representation. To do so, we substantially extend standard results about LTL by
introducing a new class of succinct ordinal automata that can encode the
interaction between the different quantitative temporal operators.Comment: 38 page
A Unified Approach to Boundedness Properties in MSO
In the past years, extensions of monadic second-order logic (MSO) that can specify boundedness properties by the use of operators referring to the sizes of sets have been considered. In particular, the logics costMSO introduced by T. Colcombet and MSO+U by M. Bojanczyk were analyzed and connections to automaton models have been established to obtain decision procedures for these logics. In this work, we propose the logic quantitative counting MSO (qcMSO for short), which combines aspects from both costMSO and MSO+U. We show that both logics can be embedded into qcMSO in a natural way. Moreover, we provide a decidability proof for the theory of its weak variant (quantification only over finite sets) for the natural numbers with order and the infinite binary tree. These decidability results are obtained using a regular cost function extension of automatic structures called resource-automatic structures
Temporalized logics and automata for time granularity
Suitable extensions of the monadic second-order theory of k successors have
been proposed in the literature to capture the notion of time granularity. In
this paper, we provide the monadic second-order theories of downward unbounded
layered structures, which are infinitely refinable structures consisting of a
coarsest domain and an infinite number of finer and finer domains, and of
upward unbounded layered structures, which consist of a finest domain and an
infinite number of coarser and coarser domains, with expressively complete and
elementarily decidable temporal logic counterparts.
We obtain such a result in two steps. First, we define a new class of
combined automata, called temporalized automata, which can be proved to be the
automata-theoretic counterpart of temporalized logics, and show that relevant
properties, such as closure under Boolean operations, decidability, and
expressive equivalence with respect to temporal logics, transfer from component
automata to temporalized ones. Then, we exploit the correspondence between
temporalized logics and automata to reduce the task of finding the temporal
logic counterparts of the given theories of time granularity to the easier one
of finding temporalized automata counterparts of them.Comment: Journal: Theory and Practice of Logic Programming Journal Acronym:

Weighted Automata and Logics for Infinite Nested Words
Nested words introduced by Alur and Madhusudan are used to capture structures
with both linear and hierarchical order, e.g. XML documents, without losing
valuable closure properties. Furthermore, Alur and Madhusudan introduced
automata and equivalent logics for both finite and infinite nested words, thus
extending B\"uchi's theorem to nested words. Recently, average and discounted
computations of weights in quantitative systems found much interest. Here, we
will introduce and investigate weighted automata models and weighted MSO logics
for infinite nested words. As weight structures we consider valuation monoids
which incorporate average and discounted computations of weights as well as the
classical semirings. We show that under suitable assumptions, two resp. three
fragments of our weighted logics can be transformed into each other. Moreover,
we show that the logic fragments have the same expressive power as weighted
nested word automata.Comment: LATA 2014, 12 page
