    Managing Small-scale Fisheries: Alternative Directions and Methods

    Human dependence on marine and coastal resources is increasing. Today, small-scale fisheries employ 50 of the world's 51 million fishers, practically all of whom are from developing countries. And together, they produce more than half of the world's annual marine fish catch of 98 million tonnes, supplying most of the fish consumed in the developing world. At the same time, increased fishery overexploitation and habitat degradation are threatening the Earth's coastal and marine resources. Most small-scale fisheries have not been well managed, if they have been managed at all. Existing approaches have failed to constrain fishing capacity or to manage conflict. They have not kept pace with technology or with the driving forces of economics, population growth, demand for food, and poverty. Worldwide, the management and governance of small-scale fisheries is in urgent need of reform. This publication looks beyond the scope of conventional fishery management to alternative concepts, tools, methods, and conservation strategies. There is, for example, broader emphasis on ecosystem management and participatory decision-making. Interested readers will include fishery managers, both governmental and nongovernmental; instructors and students in fishery management; development organizations and practitioners working on small-scale fisheries; and fishers and fishing communities that wish to take responsibility for managing their own resources

    Restocking of the Western School Prawn (Metapenaeus dalli) in the Swan Canning Riverpark

    This report provides the first comprehensive investigation into the biology and ecology of the Western School Prawn (Metapenaeus dalli) in the Swan-Canning Estuary in south-western Australia. It provides knowledge to help manage the fishery and evaluate release strategies for the aquaculture-based enhancement of this species. The study involved Murdoch University, the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) (formerly Department of Parks and Wildlife and the Swan River Trust) and the Australian Centre for Applied Aquaculture Research (ACAAR). It was designed to complement a concurrent project to develop aquaculture techniques to produce and release M. dalli and re-engage the local community with prawning and the estuary (led by ACAAR, DBCA’s Parks and Wildlife Service and the West Australian Fish Foundation), funded by the Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund. The Fisheries Research and Development Corporation provided matching funds for the current study. Biological data on M. dalli were collected from 20 sites in nearshore and 16 in the offshore waters of the Swan-Canning Estuary, ranging from the mouth of the system to ~40 and 30 km upstream in the Swan and Canning rivers, respectively, in every lunar month between October 2013 and March 2016. Laboratory studies were also completed to investigate the survival and growth of larval prawns in different salinity, water temperature and algal food conditions. Results were presented as part of the Prawn Watch program to engage the community in the research and encourage stewardship of the fishery and the estuary

    A defining theme of the 11th International Coral Reef Symposium was that the news for coral reef ecosystems are far from encouraging. Climate change happens now much faster than in an ice-age transition, and coral reefs continue to suffer fever-high temperatures as well as sour ocean conditions. Corals may be falling behind, and there appears to be no special silver bullet remedy. Nevertheless, there are hopeful signs that we should not despair. Reef ecosystems respond vigorously to protective measures and alleviation of stress. For concerned scientists, managers, conservationists, stakeholders, students, and citizens, there is a great role to play in continuing to report on the extreme threat that climate change represents to earth’s natural systems. Urgent action is needed to reduce CO2 emissions. In the interim, we can and must buy time for coral reefs through increased protection from sewage, sediment, pollutants, overfishing, development, and other stressors, all of which we know can damage coral health. The time to act is now. The canary in the coral-coal mine is dead, but we still have time to save the miners. We need effective management rooted in solid interdisciplinary science and coupled with stakeholder buy in, working at local, regional, and international scales alongside global efforts to give reefs a chance.https://nsuworks.nova.edu/occ_icrs/1000/thumbnail.jp
