    Performance-Driven Internet Path Selection

    Internet routing can often be sub-optimal, with the chosen routes providing worse performance than other available policy-compliant routes. This stems from the lack of visibility into route performance at the network layer. While this is an old problem, we argue that recent advances in programmable hardware finally open up the possibility of performance-aware routing in a deployable, BGP-compatible manner. We introduce ROUTESCOUT, a hybrid hardware/software system supporting performance-based routing at ISP scale. In the data plane, ROUTESCOUT leverages P4-enabled hardware to monitor performance across policy-compliant route choices for each destination, at line-rate and with a small memory footprint. ROUTESCOUT's control plane then asynchronously pulls aggregated performance metrics to synthesize a performance-aware forwarding policy. We show that ROUTESCOUT can monitor performance across most of an ISP's traffic, using only 4 MB of memory. Further, its control can flexibly satisfy a variety of operator objectives, with sub-second operating times

    Packet Transactions: High-level Programming for Line-Rate Switches

    Many algorithms for congestion control, scheduling, network measurement, active queue management, security, and load balancing require custom processing of packets as they traverse the data plane of a network switch. To run at line rate, these data-plane algorithms must be in hardware. With today's switch hardware, algorithms cannot be changed, nor new algorithms installed, after a switch has been built. This paper shows how to program data-plane algorithms in a high-level language and compile those programs into low-level microcode that can run on emerging programmable line-rate switching chipsets. The key challenge is that these algorithms create and modify algorithmic state. The key idea to achieve line-rate programmability for stateful algorithms is the notion of a packet transaction : a sequential code block that is atomic and isolated from other such code blocks. We have developed this idea in Domino, a C-like imperative language to express data-plane algorithms. We show with many examples that Domino provides a convenient and natural way to express sophisticated data-plane algorithms, and show that these algorithms can be run at line rate with modest estimated die-area overhead.Comment: 16 page

    Judging traffic differentiation as network neutrality violation according to internet regulation

    Network Neutrality (NN) is a principle that establishes that traffic generated by Internet applications should be treated equally and it should not be affected by arbitrary interfer- ence, degradation, or interruption. Despite this common sense, NN has multiple defi- nitions spread across the academic literature, which differ primarily on what constitutes the proper equality level to consider the network as neutral. NN definitions may also be included in regulations that control activities on the Internet. However, the regulations are set by regulators whose acts are valid within a geographical area, named jurisdic- tion. Thus, both the academia and regulations provide multiple and heterogeneous NN definitions. In this thesis, the regulations are used as guidelines to detect NN violations, which are, by this approach, the adoption of traffic management practices prohibited by regulators. Thereafter, the solutions can provide helpful information for users to support claims against illegal traffic management practices. However, state-of-the-art solutions adopt strict academic definitions (e.g., all traffic must be treated equally) or adopt the regulatory definitions from one jurisdiction, which is not realistic or does not consider that multiple jurisdictions may be traversed in an end-to-end network path, respectively An impact analysis showed that, under certain circumstances, from 39% to 48% of the detected Traffic Differentiations (TDs) are not NN violations when the regulations are considered, exposing that the regulatory aspect must not be ignored. In this thesis, a Reg- ulation Assessment step is proposed to be performed after the TD detection. This step shall consider all NN definitions that may be found in an end-to-end network path and point out NN violation when they are violated. A service is proposed to perform this step for TD detection solutions, given the unfeasibility of every solution implementing the re- quired functionalities. A Proof-of-Concept (PoC) prototype was developed based on the requirements identified along with the impact analysis, which was evaluated using infor- mation about TDs detected by a state-of-the-art solution. The verdicts were inconclusive (the TD is an NN violation or not) for a quarter of the scenarios due to lack of information about the traversed network paths and the occurrence zones (where in the network path, the TD is suspected of being deployed). However, the literature already has proposals of approaches to obtain such information. These results should encourage TD detection solution proponents to collect this data and submit them for the Regulation Assessment.Neutralidade da rede (NR) é um princípio que estabelece que o tráfego de aplicações e serviços seja tratado igualitariamente e não deve ser afetado por interferência, degradação, ou interrupção arbitrária. Apesar deste senso comum, NR tem múltiplas definições na literatura acadêmica, que diferem principalmente no que constitui o nível de igualdade adequado para considerar a rede como neutra. As definições de NR também podem ser incluídas nas regulações que controlam as atividades na Internet. No entanto, tais regu- lações são definidas por reguladores cujos atos são válidos apenas dentro de uma área geográfica denominada jurisdição. Assim, tanto a academia quanto a regulação forne- cem definições múltiplas e heterogêneas de NR. Nesta tese, a regulação é utilizada como guia para detecção de violação da NR, que nesta abordagem, é a adoção de práticas de gerenciamento de tráfego proibidas pelos reguladores. No entanto, as soluções adotam definições estritas da academia (por exemplo, todo o tráfego deve ser tratado igualmente) ou adotam as definições regulatórias de uma jurisdição, o que pode não ser realista ou pode não considerar que várias jurisdições podem ser atravessadas em um caminho de rede, respectivamente. Nesta tese, é proposta uma etapa de Avaliação da Regulação após a detecção da Diferenciação de Tráfego (DT), que deve considerar todas as definições de NR que podem ser encontradas em um caminho de rede e sinalizar violações da NR quando elas forem violadas. Uma análise de impacto mostrou que, em determinadas cir- cunstâncias, de 39% a 48% das DTs detectadas não são violações quando a regulação é considerada. É proposto um serviço para realizar a etapa de Avaliação de Regulação, visto que seria inviável que todas as soluções tivessem que implementar tal etapa. Um protótipo foi desenvolvido e avaliado usando informações sobre DTs detectadas por uma solução do estado-da-arte. Os veredictos foram inconclusivos (a DT é uma violação ou não) para 75% dos cenários devido à falta de informações sobre os caminhos de rede percorridos e sobre onde a DT é suspeita de ser implantada. No entanto, existem propostas para realizar a coleta dessas informações e espera-se que os proponentes de soluções de detecção de DT passem a coletá-las e submetê-las para o serviço de Avaliação de Regulação

    Applying Formal Methods to Networking: Theory, Techniques and Applications

    Despite its great importance, modern network infrastructure is remarkable for the lack of rigor in its engineering. The Internet which began as a research experiment was never designed to handle the users and applications it hosts today. The lack of formalization of the Internet architecture meant limited abstractions and modularity, especially for the control and management planes, thus requiring for every new need a new protocol built from scratch. This led to an unwieldy ossified Internet architecture resistant to any attempts at formal verification, and an Internet culture where expediency and pragmatism are favored over formal correctness. Fortunately, recent work in the space of clean slate Internet design---especially, the software defined networking (SDN) paradigm---offers the Internet community another chance to develop the right kind of architecture and abstractions. This has also led to a great resurgence in interest of applying formal methods to specification, verification, and synthesis of networking protocols and applications. In this paper, we present a self-contained tutorial of the formidable amount of work that has been done in formal methods, and present a survey of its applications to networking.Comment: 30 pages, submitted to IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorial

    Systems for characterizing Internet routing

    2018 Spring.Includes bibliographical references.Today the Internet plays a critical role in our lives; we rely on it for communication, business, and more recently, smart home operations. Users expect high performance and availability of the Internet. To meet such high demands, all Internet components including routing must operate at peak efficiency. However, events that hamper the routing system over the Internet are very common, causing millions of dollars of financial loss, traffic exposed to attacks, or even loss of national connectivity. Moreover, there is sparse real-time detection and reporting of such events for the public. A key challenge in addressing such issues is lack of methodology to study, evaluate and characterize Internet connectivity. While many networks operating autonomously have made the Internet robust, the complexity in understanding how users interconnect, interact and retrieve content has also increased. Characterizing how data is routed, measuring dependency on external networks, and fast outage detection has become very necessary using public measurement infrastructures and data sources. From a regulatory standpoint, there is an immediate need for systems to detect and report routing events where a content provider's routing policies may run afoul of state policies. In this dissertation, we design, build and evaluate systems that leverage existing infrastructure and report routing events in near-real time. In particular, we focus on geographic routing anomalies i.e., detours, routing failure i.e., outages, and measuring structural changes in routing policies

    Using Internet Geometry to Improve End-to-End Communication Performance

    The Internet has been designed as a best-effort communication medium between its users, providing connectivity but optimizing little else. It does not guarantee good paths between two users: packets may take longer or more congested routes than necessary, they may be delayed by slow reaction to failures, there may even be no path between users. To obtain better paths, users can form routing overlay networks, which improve the performance of packet delivery by forwarding packets along links in self-constructed graphs. Routing overlays delegate the task of selecting paths to users, who can choose among a diversity of routes which are more reliable, less loaded, shorter or have higher bandwidth than those chosen by the underlying infrastructure. Although they offer improved communication performance, existing routing overlay networks are neither scalable nor fair: the cost of measuring and computing path performance metrics between participants is high (which limits the number of participants) and they lack robustness to misbehavior and selfishness (which could discourage the participation of nodes that are more likely to offer than to receive service). In this dissertation, I focus on finding low-latency paths using routing overlay networks. I support the following thesis: it is possible to make end-to-end communication between Internet users simultaneously faster, scalable, and fair, by relying solely on inherent properties of the Internet latency space. To prove this thesis, I take two complementary approaches. First, I perform an extensive measurement study in which I analyze, using real latency data sets, properties of the Internet latency space: the existence of triangle inequality violations (TIVs) (which expose detour paths: ''indirect'' one-hop paths that have lower round-trip latency than the ''direct'' default paths), the interaction between TIVs and network coordinate systems (which leads to scalable detour discovery), and the presence of mutual advantage (which makes fairness possible). Then, using the results of the measurement study, I design and build PeerWise, the first routing overlay network that reduces end-to-end latency between its participants and is both scalable and fair. I evaluate PeerWise using simulation and through a wide-area deployment on the PlanetLab testbed

    Inter-domain traffic management in and evolving Internet peering eco-system

    Operators of the Autonomous Systems (ASes) composing the Internet must deal with constant traffic growth, while striving to reduce the overall cost-per-bit and keep an acceptable quality of service. These challenges have motivated ASes to evolve their infrastructure from basic interconnectivity strategies, using a couple transit providers and a few settlement-free peers, to employ geographical scoped transit services (e.g. partial transit) and multiplying their peering efforts. Internet Exchange Points (IXPs), facilities allowing the establishment of sessions to multiple networks using the same infrastructure, have hence become central entities of the Internet. Although the benefits of a diverse interconnection strategy are manifold, it also encumbers the inter-domain Traffic Engineering process and potentially increases the effects of incompatible interests with neighboring ASes. To efficiently manage the inter-domain traffic under such challenges, operators should rely on monitoring systems and computer supported decisions. This thesis explores the IXP-centric inter-domain environment, the managing obstacles arising from it, and proposes mechanisms for operators to tackle them. The thesis is divided in two parts. The first part examines and measures the global characteristics of the inter-domain ecosystem. We characterize several IXPs around the world, comparing them in terms of their number of members and the properties of the traffic they exchange. After highlighting the problems arising from the member overlapping among IXPs, we introduce remote peering, an interconnection service that facilitates the connection to multiple IXPs. We describe this service and measure its adoption in the Internet. In the second part of the thesis, we take the position of the network operators. We detail the challenges surrounding the control of inter-domain traffic, and introduce an operational framework aimed at facilitating its management. Subsequently, we examine methods that peering coordinators and network engineers can use to plan their infrastructure investments, by quantifying the benefits of new interconnections. Finally, we delve into the effects of conflicting business objectives among ASes. These conflicts can result in traffic distributions that violate the (business) interests of one or more ASes. We describe these interest violations, differentiating their impact on the ingress and egress traffic of a single AS. Furthermore, we develop a warning system that operators can use to detect and rank them. We test our warning system using data from two real networks, where we discover a large number of interest violations.
