    City-Scaled Digital Documentation: A Comparative Analysis of Digital Documentation Technologies for Recording Architectural Heritage

    The historic preservation field, enabled by advances in technology, has demonstrated an increased interest in digitizing cultural heritage sites and historic structures. Increases in software capabilities as well as greater affordability has fostered augmented use of digital documentation technologies for architectural heritage applications. Literature establishes four prominent categories of digital documentation tools for preservation: laser scanning, photogrammetry, multimedia geographic information systems (GIS) and three-dimensional modeling. Thoroughly explored through published case studies, the documentation techniques for recording heritage are most often integrated. Scholarly literature does not provide a parallel comparison of the four technologies. A comparative analysis of the four techniques, as presented in this thesis, makes it possible for cities to understand the most applicable technique for their preservation objectives. The thesis analyzes four cases studies that employ applications of the technologies: New Orleans Laser Scanning, University of Maryland Photogrammetry, Historic Columbia Maps Project and the Virtual Historic Savannah Project. Following this, the thesis undertakes a trial of each documentation technology – laser scanning, photogrammetry, multimedia GIS and three-dimensional modeling – utilizing a block on Church Street between Queen and Chalmers streets within the Charleston Historic District. The apparent outcomes of each of the four techniques is analyzed according to a series of parameters including: audience, application, efficacy in recordation, refinement, expertise required, manageability of the product, labor intensity and necessary institutional capacity. A concluding matrix quantifies the capability of each of the technologies in terms of the parameters. This method furnishes a parallel comparison of the techniques and their efficacy in architectural heritage documentation within mid-sized cities

    QoS-aware Storage Virtualization: A Framework for Multi-tier Infrastructures in Cloud Storage Systems

    The emergence of the relatively modern phenomenon of cloud computing has manifested a different approach to the availability and storage of software and data on a remote online server ‘in the cloud’, which can be accessed by pre-determined users through the Internet, even allowing sharing of data in certain scenarios. Data availability, reliability, and access performance are three important factors that need to be taken into consideration by cloud providers when designing a high-performance storage system for any organization. Due to the high costs of maintaining and managing multiple local storage systems, it is now considered more applicable to design a virtualized multi-tier storage infrastructure, yet, the existing Quality of Service (QoS) must be guaranteed on the application level within the cloud without ongoing human intervention. Such interference seems necessary since the delivered QoS can vary widely both across and within storage tiers, depending on the access profile of the data. This survey paper encompasses a general framework for the optimal design of a distributed system in order to attain efficient data availability and reliability. To this extent, numerous state-of-the-art technologies and methods have been revised, especially for multi-tiered distributed cloud systems. Moreover, several critical aspects that must be taken into consideration for getting optimal performance of QoS-aware cloud systems are discussed, highlighting some solutions to handle failure situations, and the possible advantages and benefits of QoS. Finally, this papers attempts to argue the possible improvements that have been developed on QoS-aware cloud systems like Q-cloud since 2010, such as any extra attempts been carried forward to make the Q-cloud more adaptable and secure

Recent reviews of extant literature highlights the need for multi-disciplinary research. This research should explore and further develops the conceptualization of value in cloud computing research. In addition, there is a need for research which investigates how IT value manifests itself across the chain of service provision and in inter-organizational scenarios. This open access book will review the state of the art from an IS, Computer Science and Accounting perspective, will introduce and discuss the main techniques for measuring business value for cloud computing in a variety of scenarios, and illustrate these with mini-case studies

    TLS AND IMAGE-BASED ACQUISITION GEOMETRY FOR EVALUATING SURFACE CHARACTERIZATION

    In the framework of cultural heritage documentation projects, it is very frequent the use of dense and detailed 3D models derived from range-based or image-based techniques. These reality-based models represent an effective and powerful solution to document the geometries, the surfaces and the characteristic of heritage assets. In fact, these technologies allow us to accurately describe the level of detail and the surface characterization of the materials, and also to provide precious support for the evaluation of the conservation status of the surveyed structures. In particular, the object studied in the presented research experience is the Morano sul Po arch (Morano sul Po, AL, Piedmont, Italy), a valuable example of an industrial archaeology asset. For the knowledge process of the arch, both LiDAR systems and photogrammetric strategies have been used, in order to properly document the geometry, the consistency of the material and the decays. The specific aim of the research presented in this paper is the evaluation of the advantages and the critical issues of using a telescopic pneumatic pole to raise the position of the scans from the ground and decrease the angle of incidence of the laser beam on the surveyed object. For this reason, the study also takes into consideration the use of mini UAVs and their flexibility to effectively acquire vertical surfaces even at elevated heights, comparing the density and the roughness of the derived model with the data obtainable by using TLS systems
