    Standard Selection Modes in Dynamic, Complex Industries: Creating Hybrids between Market Selection and Negotiated Selection of Standards

    Several sectors within Information and Communication Technology demonstrate a shift from purely market-based selection of standards or purely negotiated selection of standards to hybrid selection processes, where both market competition and negotiation play a role. Negotiated standard setting processes (such as those organised by the ITU) assure interoperability of technical components and services. Private firms, however, increasingly tend to undercut these collective actions. Their innovations jump-start new developments, but also create incompatibilities, lock-in effects, and pockets of market power. Internet telephony is an example, where firms, standard setting alliances, and political institutions create a hybrid market-based / negotiated standard setting environment. The paper explores the development of this hybrid networking environment.     OpenPING: A Reflective Middleware for the Construction of Adaptive Networked Game Applications

    The emergence of distributed Virtual Reality (VR) applications that run over the Internet has presented networked game application designers with new challenges. In an environment where the public internet streams multimedia data and is constantly under pressure to deliver over widely heterogeneous user-platforms, there has been a growing need that distributed VR applications be aware of and adapt to frequent variations in their context of execution. In this paper, we argue that in contrast to research efforts targeted at improvement of scalability, persistence and responsiveness capabilities, much less attempts have been aimed at addressing the flexibility, maintainability and extensibility requirements in contemporary distributed VR platforms. We propose the use of structural reflection as an approach that not only addresses these requirements but also offers added value in the form of providing a framework for scalability, persistence and responsiveness that is itself flexible, maintainable and extensible. We also present an adaptive middleware platform implementation called OpenPING1 that supports our proposal in addressing these requirements

    A sub-mW IoT-endnode for always-on visual monitoring and smart triggering

    This work presents a fully-programmable Internet of Things (IoT) visual sensing node that targets sub-mW power consumption in always-on monitoring scenarios. The system features a spatial-contrast 128x64128\mathrm{x}64 binary pixel imager with focal-plane processing. The sensor, when working at its lowest power mode (10ÎĽW10\mu W at 10 fps), provides as output the number of changed pixels. Based on this information, a dedicated camera interface, implemented on a low-power FPGA, wakes up an ultra-low-power parallel processing unit to extract context-aware visual information. We evaluate the smart sensor on three always-on visual triggering application scenarios. Triggering accuracy comparable to RGB image sensors is achieved at nominal lighting conditions, while consuming an average power between 193ÎĽW193\mu W and 277ÎĽW277\mu W, depending on context activity. The digital sub-system is extremely flexible, thanks to a fully-programmable digital signal processing engine, but still achieves 19x lower power consumption compared to MCU-based cameras with significantly lower on-board computing capabilities.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, submitteted to IEEE IoT Journa

    Khazana: a flexible wide area data store

    technical reportKhazana is a peer-to-peer data service that supports efficient sharing and aggressive caching of mutable data across the wide area while giving clients significant control over replica divergence. Previous work on wide-area replicated services focussed on at most two of the following three properties: aggressive replication, customizable consistency, and generality. In contrast, Khazana provides scalable support for large numbers of replicas while giving applications considerable flexibility in trading off consistency for availability and performance. Its flexibility enables applications to effectively exploit inherent data locality while meeting consistency needs. Khazana exports a file system-like interface with a small set of consistency controls which can be combined to yield a broad spectrum of consistency flavors ranging from strong consistency to best-effort eventual consistency. Khazana servers form failure-resilient dynamic replica hierarchies to manage replicas across variable quality network links. In this report, we outline Khazana?s design and show how its flexibility enables three diverse network services built on top of it to meet their individual consistency and performance needs: (i) a wide-area replicated file system that supports serializable writes as well as traditional file sharing across wide area, (ii) an enterprise data service that exploits locality by caching enterprise data closer to end-users while ensuring strong consistency for data integrity, and (iii) a replicated database that reaps order of magnitude gains in throughput by relaxing consistency

    AMRA: Augmented Reality Assistance for Train Maintenance Tasks

    International audienceThe AMRA project, carried out by a consortium including industrials and research partners, aims at implementing an Augmented Reality (AR) system for mobile use in industrial applications such as train maintenance and repairs in industrial sites. The adopted solution is a video see-through system where a tablet-PC is used as an augmented window. The overall architecture of a prototype is unfolded, and its key points are detailed. For instance, a visual registration system has been developed to accurately overlay a video stream with information. A robust, real time registration, using a single camera tied to the tablet-PC, is performed. Besides, a hierarchical description of maintenance procedure is set up and enriched by new media such as photos, video and/or 3D models. These 3D models have been specially tailored to meet maintenance tasks requirements. The obtained multimedia contents allow easy access to technical documentation through a man machine interface managing a multimedia engine. All these features have been combined in the AMRA prototype which have been evaluated by a maintenance operator
