    Folkbotanical Knowledge in the Chacao Sub-valley, Caracas-Venezuela

    Today, the conservation of biodiversity is a major international goal of policy makers and scientific researchers whose work informs policy. Increasingly, indigenous and folk knowledge of biodiversity is addressed as a significant source of insight into the ways in which ethnobotanical knowledge is not practically useful but constitutes intellectually coherent systems of knowledge. Critical analysis of biodiversity has shown that indigenous and folk ecological knowledge is gendarme to the survival of cultural identity as well as the broader biosystem and, in recent years, much attention has been drawn to the anthropogenic character of what were previously assumed to be natural features of the ecosystem. As the pressures on traditional and indigenous communities mount, the search for effective forms of documentation to support the study, conservation and transmission of indigenous knowledge is becoming increasingly urgent. This thesis explores and documents the folkecological knowledge of the people of Pedregal, an urban neighborhood in Caracas, Venezuela. It examines those domains and aspects of folkecological and folkbotanical knowledge that have persisted throughout the transformation of Pedregal from a rural hamlet to an urban neighbourhood exploring the effects of drastic social changes on the conservation and renewal of nature related systems of knowledge

    Seeing Through Things:Exploring the Design Space of Privacy-Aware Data-Enabled Objects

    Increasing amounts of sensor-augmented research objects have been used in design research. We call these objects Data-Enabled Objects, which can be integrated into daily activities capturing data about people's detailed whereabouts, behaviours, and routines. These objects provide data perspectives on everyday life for contextual design research. However, data-enabled objects are still computational devices with limited privacy awareness and nuanced data sharing. To better design data-enabled objects, we explore privacy design spaces by inviting 18 teams of undergraduate design students to re-design the same type of sensor-enabled home research camera. We developed the Connected Peekaboo Toolkit (CPT) to support the design teams in designing, building, and directly deploying their prototypes in real home studies. We conducted Thematic Analysis to analyze their outcomes which led us to interpret that privacy is not just an obstacle but can be a driver by unfolding an exploration of possible design spaces for data-enabled objects.</p

    Northern Greenhouses : an alternative local food provisioning strategy for Nunavik

    Les serres nordiques: Une approche alternative à la sécurité alimentaire au Nunavik. Les communautés inuites font face à des changements socioculturels et environnementaux rapides ainsi qu’à plusieurs défis concernant la sécurité alimentaire. Récemment, plusieurs projets innovateurs ont pris forme pour pallier aux coûts élevés et la qualité discutable des aliments frais dans le Nord. Cette recherche s’est déroulée au Nunavik (la région inuite de la province de Québec, Canada) et a été élaborée en utilisant une approche de recherche participative. L’objectif de ce travail était de documenter et de participer au développement d’un projet pilote de serre dans le village de Kuujjuaq dans le but de développer un modèle de sécurité alimentaire alternative pour le Nord. Plusieurs personnes ont, de prime abord, remis en question la viabilité à long terme d’un projet de serre dans une communauté inuite. Pourtant, les résultats de cette recherche démontrent qu’il y a de l’intérêt et du soutien de tous les secteurs pour ce type d’initiative. Les résultats démontrent également qu’une stratégie d’approvisionnement local basée sur la serriculture est techniquement faisable et socialement acceptable. La conclusion générale de cette recherche est que les serres nordiques ont le potentiel de devenir des éléments clés dans une nouvelle stratégie alimentaire nordique, une stratégie qui sera plus résiliente que celle que nous connaissons aujourd'hui, et qui va contribuer de manière durable à l’essor de la capacité communautaire et au développement socioéconomique des villages nordiques.Northern Greenhouses: An Alternative Approach to Food Security in Nunavik. Inuit communities are currently facing rapid sociocultural and environmental change as well as numerous food security issues. However, these issues are being addressed in increasingly innovative ways; notably through the implementation of alternative agricultural projects that address the high cost and questionable quality of fresh food in the North. This research took place in Nunavik (the Inuit region of the province of Quebec, Canada) and was elaborated using a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approach. The objective of this work was to participate in and document the development of a greenhouse pilot project in the village of Kuujjuaq and, through this process, develop a framework for an alternative type of northern food security initiative. While many initially questioned the long-term viability of a greenhouse project in an Inuit community, results of this research show that there is indeed interest in and concerted support from all sectors for this type of initiative. Results also show that a greenhouse-based local food strategy in Nunavik is technically feasible and can be developed in a manner that is culturally appropriate and socially acceptable. The overall conclusion drawn from this research is that northern greenhouses have the potential to become key elements in a new type of northern food strategy, a strategy that will be more resilient than the one that we know today and that will contribute in a sustainable manner to the building up of the community capacity and socioeconomic stability of northern villages

    Regional growth disparities in Vietnam.

    Growth inequality is a pressing issue for Vietnam, one of the fastest-growing economies in Southeast Asia. This dissertation examines potential factors contributing to the regional economic growth disparities of Vietnam and their effects on the development process. The Extreme Bound Analysis approach was used for estimating growth equations to identify the robust determinants of the model. Using the data from 42 provinces in Vietnam from 1998 to 2003, the analysis confirms the importance of good economic governance, initial GDP level, human capital, and population. The analysis suggests that provincial governance such as State Sector Bias and Proactivity of Provincial Leadership are robust and economically important factors related to regional economic growth

    Mindfulness Practitioners in the Classroom: An Exploration of Lived Experiences

    abstract: Within the past 10 years, there has been an increased interest in providing teachers with mindfulness training. This is due largely in part to the amount of stress that K-12 teachers report as a result of the profession and the research proposing that practicing mindfulness helps one cope with stress and offers the potential to promote one's well-being. This qualitative study explores the intersection of mindfulness and K-12 teaching. Four K-12 teachers who self-identified as mindfulness practitioners were interviewed, and their lived experiences as mindfulness practitioners and teachers are explored throughout this study. Through in-depth, phenomenologically-based interviews, the participants' life histories in relation to becoming mindfulness practitioners and teachers are uncovered, as well as their experiences as mindfulness practitioners in the classroom, and their reflections upon what is means to be a mindfulness practitioner and a teacher. For the participants in this study, they believed their mindfulness practices helped them cope with the demands of teaching. The participants also viewed mindfulness practices as a pedagogical tool for promoting their students' social and emotional well-being. As one of the first studies to explore teachers who have personal mindfulness practices and how those practices transfer or do not transfer into their professional experiences, it adds teachers' voices to the mindfulness in education phenomena.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Curriculum and Instruction 201
