Hybrid SAT-Based Consistency Checking Algorithms for Simple Temporal Networks with Decisions
A Simple Temporal Network (STN) consists of time points modeling temporal events and constraints modeling the minimal and maximal temporal distance between them. A Simple Temporal Network with Decisions (STND) extends an STN by adding decision time points to model temporal plans with decisions. A decision time point is a special kind of time point that once executed allows for deciding a truth value for an associated Boolean proposition. Furthermore, STNDs label time points and constraints by conjunctions of literals saying for which scenarios (i.e., complete truth value assignments to the propositions) they are relevant. Thus, an STND models a family of STNs each obtained as a projection of the initial STND onto a scenario. An STND is consistent if there exists a consistent scenario (i.e., a scenario such that the corresponding STN projection is consistent). Recently, a hybrid SAT-based consistency checking algorithm (HSCC) was proposed to check the consistency of an STND. Unfortunately, that approach lacks experimental evaluation and does not allow for the synthesis of all consistent scenarios. In this paper, we propose an incremental HSCC algorithm for STNDs that (i) is faster than the previous one and (ii) allows for the synthesis of all consistent scenarios and related early execution schedules (offline temporal planning). Then, we carry out an experimental evaluation with KAPPA, a tool that we developed for STNDs. Finally, we prove that STNDs and disjunctive temporal networks (DTNs) are equivalent

Solution space heterogeneity of the random K-satisfiability problem: Theory and simulations
The random K-satisfiability (K-SAT) problem is an important problem for
studying typical-case complexity of NP-complete combinatorial satisfaction; it
is also a representative model of finite-connectivity spin-glasses. In this
paper we review our recent efforts on the solution space fine structures of the
random K-SAT problem. A heterogeneity transition is predicted to occur in the
solution space as the constraint density alpha reaches a critical value
alpha_cm. This transition marks the emergency of exponentially many solution
communities in the solution space. After the heterogeneity transition the
solution space is still ergodic until alpha reaches a larger threshold value
alpha_d, at which the solution communities disconnect from each other to become
different solution clusters (ergodicity-breaking). The existence of solution
communities in the solution space is confirmed by numerical simulations of
solution space random walking, and the effect of solution space heterogeneity
on a stochastic local search algorithm SEQSAT, which performs a random walk of
single-spin flips, is investigated. The relevance of this work to glassy

Bigraphs with sharing
Bigraphical Reactive Systems (BRS) were designed by Milner as a universal formalism for modelling systems that evolve in time, locality, co-locality and connectivity. But the underlying model of location (the place graph) is a forest, which means there is no straightforward representation of locations that can overlap or intersect. This occurs in many domains, for example in wireless signalling, social interactions and audio communications. Here, we define bigraphs with sharing, which solves this problem by an extension of the basic formalism: we define the place graph as a directed acyclic graph, thus allowing a natural representation of overlapping or intersecting locations. We give a complete presentation of the theory of bigraphs with sharing, including a categorical semantics, algebraic properties, and several essential procedures for computation: bigraph with sharing matching, a SAT encoding of matching, and checking a fragment of the logic BiLog. We show that matching is an instance of the NP-complete sub-graph isomorphism problem and our approach based on a SAT encoding is also efficient for standard bigraphs. We give an overview of BigraphER (Bigraph Evaluator & Rewriting), an efficient implementation of bigraphs with sharing that provides manipulation, simulation and visualisation. The matching engine is based on the SAT encoding of the matching algorithm. Examples from the 802.11 CSMA/CA RTS/CTS protocol and a network management support system illustrate the applicability of the new theory
Phase Transitions of the Typical Algorithmic Complexity of the Random Satisfiability Problem Studied with Linear Programming
Here we study the NP-complete -SAT problem. Although the worst-case
complexity of NP-complete problems is conjectured to be exponential, there
exist parametrized random ensembles of problems where solutions can typically
be found in polynomial time for suitable ranges of the parameter. In fact,
random -SAT, with as control parameter, can be solved quickly
for small enough values of . It shows a phase transition between a
satisfiable phase and an unsatisfiable phase. For branch and bound algorithms,
which operate in the space of feasible Boolean configurations, the empirically
hardest problems are located only close to this phase transition. Here we study
-SAT () and the related optimization problem MAX-SAT by a linear
programming approach, which is widely used for practical problems and allows
for polynomial run time. In contrast to branch and bound it operates outside
the space of feasible configurations. On the other hand, finding a solution
within polynomial time is not guaranteed. We investigated several variants like
including artificial objective functions, so called cutting-plane approaches,
and a mapping to the NP-complete vertex-cover problem. We observed several
easy-hard transitions, from where the problems are typically solvable (in
polynomial time) using the given algorithms, respectively, to where they are
not solvable in polynomial time. For the related vertex-cover problem on random
graphs these easy-hard transitions can be identified with structural properties
of the graphs, like percolation transitions. For the present random -SAT
problem we have investigated numerous structural properties also exhibiting
clear transitions, but they appear not be correlated to the here observed
easy-hard transitions. This renders the behaviour of random -SAT more
