    Seguimiento de trayectoria robusta de un cuadricóptero sin mediciones de velocidad utilizando el control super-twisting generalizado

    This paper presents a nonlinear control strategy to solve the path tracking problem for a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle under perturbations. This strategy is based on the Generalized Super-Twisting Algorithm (GSTA); it means the second order sliding mode technique, which is able to ensure robustness with respect to modeling errors and bounded external disturbances due to the added extra linear correction terms. The controller goal is to achieve suitable path tracking of desired absolute positions and yaw angle while keeping the stability of the pitch and roll angle, in spite of the presence of disturbances and the handling of all system nonlinearities. In this work, a scenario in which velocities measurements are not available and are estimated by the Generalized Super-Twisting Observer is considered. Finally, the simulation results are also provided in order to illustrate the performances of the proposed controller.Este artículo presenta una estrategia de control no lineal para resolver el problema de seguimiento de trayectorias para un vehículo aéreo no tripulado bajo perturbaciones. Esta estrategia se basa en el Algoritmo Super-Twisting Generalizado (GSTA); es una técnica de modos deslizantes de segundo orden, la cual es capaz de asegurar robustez con respecto a errores de modelado y perturbaciones externas acotadas debido a los términos de corrección lineales añadidos respecto al algoritmo Super Twisting convencional. El objetivo del controlador es conseguir un seguimiento de trayectoria adecuado de las posiciones absolutas deseadas y del ángulo de guiñada, mientras se mantiene la estabilidad del ángulo de inclinación y de alabeo, a pesar de la presencia de perturbaciones y las no linealidades del sistema. En este trabajo, es considerado un escenario en el que las mediciones de las velocidades no están disponibles y son estimadas por el Observador Super-Twisting Generalizado. Finalmente, también fueron proporcionados los resultados de simulación para ilustrar el desempeño del controlador propuesto

    Application of sliding mode control with extended high gain observer to stabilize the underactuated quadrotor system

    This work proposes an output feedback controller for stabilization of the quadrotor underactuated system in the presence of time varying disturbances and model uncertainties. The proposed control is an improvement to the sliding mode control (SMC). An extended high-gain observer (EHGO) when combined with sliding mode control (SMC) able to give feasible performance beyond the performance of the standard sliding mode. It is able to bring the state trajectories of the closed-loop system close to the target system with a smaller ultimate bound of error and smaller control magnitude.     Control design for UAV quadrotors via embedded model control

    In this paper, a control system for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is designed, tested in simulation by means of a high-fidelity simulator, and then applied to a real quadrotor UAV. A novel approach is proposed for the control design, based on the combination of two methodologies: feedback linearization (FL) and embedded model control (EMC). FL allows us to properly transform the UAV dynamics into a form suitable for EMC; EMC is then used to control the transformed system. A key feature of EMC is that it encompasses a so-called extended state observer (ESO), which not only recovers the system state but also gives a real-time estimate of all the disturbances/uncertainties affecting the system. This estimate is used by the FL-EMC control law to reject the aforementioned disturbances/uncertainties, including those collected via the FL, allowing a robustness and performance enhancement. This approach allows us to combine FL and EMC strengths. Most notably, the entire process is made systematic and application oriented. To set-up a reliable UAV attitude observer, an effective attitude sensors fusion is proposed and also benchmarked with an enhanced complementary filter. Finally, to enhance the closed-loop performance, a complete tuning procedure, encompassing frequency requirements, is outlined, based on suitably defined stability and performance metrics

    High-Gain Disturbance Observer for Robust Trajectory Tracking of Quadrotors

    This paper presents a simple method to boost the robustness of quadrotors in trajectory tracking. The presented method features a high-gain disturbance observer (HGDO) that provides disturbance estimates in real-time. The estimates are then used in a trajectory control law to compensate for disturbance effects. We present theoretical convergence results showing that the proposed HGDO can quickly converge to an adjustable neighborhood of actual disturbance values. We will then integrate the disturbance estimates with a typical robust trajectory controller, namely sliding mode control (SMC), and present Lyapunov stability analysis to establish the boundedness of trajectory tracking errors. However, our stability analysis can be easily extended to other Lyapunov-based controllers to develop different HGDO-based controllers with formal stability guarantees. We evaluate the proposed HGDO-based control method using both simulation and laboratory experiments in various scenarios and in the presence of external disturbances. Our results indicate that the addition of HGDO to a quadrotor trajectory controller can significantly improve the accuracy and precision of trajectory tracking in the presence of external disturbances

    Fault Tolerant Super Twisting Sliding Mode Control of a Quadrotor UAV Using Control Allocation

    In this study, a fault-tolerant super-twisting sliding mode controller with a control allocation system for a quadrotor aircraft is proposed. Super twisting sliding mode control is a robust control technique that handles a system with a relative degree equal to one. A super-twisting sliding mode controller is proposed because of its robustness to uncertainties and perturbations. It increases accuracy and reduces chattering. A control allocation algorithm is developed to cope with the actuator fault. Firstly, a nonlinear model of the quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is presented. Then, the controller design and type of the actuator fault are explained. The control allocation algorithm is used to optimize the trajectory tracking performance of the quadrotor in the presence of an actuator fault. A control allocation algorithm is an effective approach to implementing fault-tolerant control. When actuator faults are identified, they can be modeled as changes in the B matrix of constraints. Various simulations have been made for situations with and without actuator failure. In normal conditions, the quadrotor can accurately track altitude, roll, pitch and yaw references. In faulty conditions, the quadrotor can follow the references with a small error. Simulations prove the effectiveness of the control allocation algorithm, which stabilizes the quadrotor in case of an actuator fault. Overall, this paper presents a novel fault-tolerant controller design for quadrotor aircraft that effectively addresses actuator faults using a super-twisting sliding mode controller and control allocation algorithm

    The Borea project: a quadrotor uav cradle-to-grave design for space gnc prototyping and testing

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and, more specifically, n-copters have come to prominence in the last decade due to their several applications. Also, in the automatic control research community UAVs have drawn great attention, since their non-linear and under-actuated nature making them suitable for testing a wide range of control architectures and algorithms. In this paper, prominent theoretical aspects, simulations, and experimental results of the Borea project are presented. The Borea project aims at testing space guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) algorithms leveraging a simplified, rapidly prototypable, low-cost, and easy-to-test quadrotor platform. More precisely, one of the main project objectives consists in testing Moon and Mars planetary landing algorithms, thanks to the similitude, in the command authority and the landing approach, between n-copters and spacecraft; during the propulsive landing phase. Indeed, both n-copters and spacecraft can provide a thrust vector characterized by constant direction and adjustable magnitude. This similitude approach makes it possible to anticipate issues and avoid failures such as those that occurred in the Schiaparelli Mars Lander. To this aim, the complete control unit design, and the UAV plant electro-mechanical prototyping were addressed; so far. Specifically, the control unit was designed within the framework of the Embedded Model Control (EMC) methodology. The EMC design, based on an internal model, also includes the uncertainties as disturbances to be estimated and actively rejected. The Borea UAV has been endowed with a control system leveraging a wide range of automatic control concepts, ranging from modelling, identification, and linear and non-linear control laws, to deal with its position, velocity, and attitude regulation. To sum up, all these results were achieved by means of a properly structured cradle-to-grave design process which, starting from the simultaneous plant modelling and prototyping, ended up with a complete flight tests campaign. Most notably, the testing process involved intensive numerical simulations as well as multi-stage hardware/plant tests and models validation. From the control perspective, the several developed controllers were tuned and tested, via proper simulations and on-purpose flight tests, aiming at validating, from time to time, specific functionalities and control performances. Finally, some results coming from high-fidelity simulations, the hardware and model testing, and in-flight operations are provided to underline the most relevant aspects of the Borea plant and the control unit performance

    Fault Diagnosis and Fault-Tolerant Control of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

    With the increasing demand for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in both military and civilian applications, critical safety issues need to be specially considered in order to make better and wider use of them. UAVs are usually employed to work in hazardous and complex environments, which may seriously threaten the safety and reliability of UAVs. Therefore, the safety and reliability of UAVs are becoming imperative for development of advanced intelligent control systems. The key challenge now is the lack of fully autonomous and reliable control techniques in face of different operation conditions and sophisticated environments. Further development of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) control systems is required to be reliable in the presence of system component faults and to be insensitive to model uncertainties and external environmental disturbances. This thesis research aims to design and develop novel control schemes for UAVs with consideration of all the factors that may threaten their safety and reliability. A novel adaptive sliding mode control (SMC) strategy is proposed to accommodate model uncertainties and actuator faults for an unmanned quadrotor helicopter. Compared with the existing adaptive SMC strategies in the literature, the proposed adaptive scheme can tolerate larger actuator faults without stimulating control chattering due to the use of adaptation parameters in both continuous and discontinuous control parts. Furthermore, a fuzzy logic-based boundary layer and a nonlinear disturbance observer are synthesized to further improve the capability of the designed control scheme for tolerating model uncertainties, actuator faults, and unknown external disturbances while preventing overestimation of the adaptive control parameters and suppressing the control chattering effect. Then, a cost-effective fault estimation scheme with a parallel bank of recurrent neural networks (RNNs) is proposed to accurately estimate actuator fault magnitude and an active fault-tolerant control (FTC) framework is established for a closed-loop quadrotor helicopter system. Finally, a reconfigurable control allocation approach is combined with adaptive SMC to achieve the capability of tolerating complete actuator failures with application to a modified octorotor helicopter. The significance of this proposed control scheme is that the stability of the closed-loop system is theoretically guaranteed in the presence of both single and simultaneous actuator faults
