Medical image enhancement using threshold decomposition driven adaptive morphological filter
One of the most common degradations in medical images is their poor contrast quality. This suggests the use of contrast enhancement methods as an attempt to modify the intensity distribution of the image. In this paper, a new edge detected morphological filter is proposed to sharpen digital medical images. This is done by detecting the positions of the edges and then applying a class of morphological filtering. Motivated by the success of threshold decomposition, gradientbased operators are used to detect the locations of the edges. A morphological filter is used to sharpen these detected edges. Experimental results demonstrate that the detected edge deblurring filter improved the visibility and perceptibility of various embedded structures in digital medical images. Moreover, the performance of the proposed filter is superior to that of other sharpener-type filters
Discrete Signal Processing on Graphs: Frequency Analysis
Signals and datasets that arise in physical and engineering applications, as
well as social, genetics, biomolecular, and many other domains, are becoming
increasingly larger and more complex. In contrast to traditional time and image
signals, data in these domains are supported by arbitrary graphs. Signal
processing on graphs extends concepts and techniques from traditional signal
processing to data indexed by generic graphs. This paper studies the concepts
of low and high frequencies on graphs, and low-, high-, and band-pass graph
filters. In traditional signal processing, there concepts are easily defined
because of a natural frequency ordering that has a physical interpretation. For
signals residing on graphs, in general, there is no obvious frequency ordering.
We propose a definition of total variation for graph signals that naturally
leads to a frequency ordering on graphs and defines low-, high-, and band-pass
graph signals and filters. We study the design of graph filters with specified
frequency response, and illustrate our approach with applications to sensor
malfunction detection and data classification
On the eigenfilter design method and its applications: a tutorial
The eigenfilter method for digital filter design involves the computation of filter coefficients as the eigenvector of an appropriate Hermitian matrix. Because of its low complexity as compared to other methods as well as its ability to incorporate various time and frequency-domain constraints easily, the eigenfilter method has been found to be very useful. In this paper, we present a review of the eigenfilter design method for a wide variety of filters, including linear-phase finite impulse response (FIR) filters, nonlinear-phase FIR filters, all-pass infinite impulse response (IIR) filters, arbitrary response IIR filters, and multidimensional filters. Also, we focus on applications of the eigenfilter method in multistage filter design, spectral/spacial beamforming, and in the design of channel-shortening equalizers for communications applications
Pipelined Two-Operand Modular Adders
Pipelined two-operand modular adder (TOMA) is one of basic components used in digital signal processing (DSP) systems that use the residue number system (RNS). Such modular adders are used in binary/residue and residue/binary converters, residue multipliers and scalers as well as within residue processing channels. The design of pipelined TOMAs is usually obtained by inserting an appriopriate number of latch layers inside a nonpipelined TOMA structure. Hence their area is also determined by the number of latches and the delay by the number of latch layers. In this paper we propose a new pipelined TOMA that is based on a new TOMA, that has the smaller area and smaller delay than other known structures. Comparisons are made using data from the very large scale of integration (VLSI) standard cell library

Specifically, we aim to design a filter such that the H∞ norm of the filtering error-transfer function is not less than a given upper bound, while the poles of the filtering matrix are assigned within a prespecified circular region, and the steady-state error variance for each state is not more than the individual prespecified value. The filter design problem is formulated as an auxiliary matrix assignment problem. Both the existence condition and the explicit expression of the desired filters are then derived by using an algebraic matrix inequality approach. The proposed design algorithm is illustrated by a numerical example
