Performance Analysis for Bandwidth Allocation in IEEE 802.16 Broadband Wireless Networks using BMAP Queueing
This paper presents a performance analysis for the bandwidth allocation in
IEEE 802.16 broadband wireless access (BWA) networks considering the
packet-level quality-of-service (QoS) constraints. Adaptive Modulation and
Coding (AMC) rate based on IEEE 802.16 standard is used to adjust the
transmission rate adaptively in each frame time according to channel quality in
order to obtain multiuser diversity gain. To model the arrival process and the
traffic source we use the Batch Markov Arrival Process (BMAP), which enables
more realistic and more accurate traffic modelling. We determine analytically
different performance parameters, such as average queue length, packet dropping
probability, queue throughput and average packet delay. Finally, the analytical
results are validated numerically.Comment: 16 page
Priority-Based Resource Allocation for Downlink OFDMA Systems Supporting RT and NRT Traffics
Efficient radio resource management is essential in Quality-of-Service (QoS) provisioning for wireless communication networks. In this paper, we propose a novel priority-based packet scheduling algorithm for downlink OFDMA systems. The proposed algorithm is designed to support heterogeneous applications consisting of both real-time (RT) and non-real-time (NRT) traffics with the objective to increase the spectrum efficiency while satisfying diverse QoS requirements. It tightly couples the subchannel allocation and packet scheduling together through an integrated cross-layer approach in which each packet is assigned a priority value based on both the instantaneous channel conditions as well as the QoS constraints. An efficient suboptimal heuristic algorithm is proposed to reduce the computational complexity with marginal performance degradation compared to the optimal solution. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can significantly improve the system performance in terms of high spectral efficiency and low outage probability compared to conventional packet scheduling algorithms, thus is very suitable for the downlink of current OFDMA systems
Channel Aware Uplink Scheduler for a Mobile Subscriber Station of IEEE 802.16e
The scheduling part of the IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX) standards
is kept as an open issue to provide differentiation among
equipment manufacturers and operators. The uplink
scheduling is very significant and more complex compared
to downlink scheduling. Uplink scheduling is divided into
two parts; one is scheduling the resources among many users
from a base station (BS) and the other is sharing the
resources among its services in a single user. BS uplink
scheduling has been given more attention compared to
subscriber station (SS) uplink scheduling. SS scheduler
plays a significant role in providing the quality of service
(QoS) among its services. The channel status awareness is
vital in designing the SS scheduler as the channel conditions vary for a mobile user. This work proposes a scheduling algorithm for SS, which utilizes the channel information and queue length variation for the reallocation of received aggregated bandwidth grant to optimize the QoS parameters. The performance of the proposed algorithm is studied by conducting simulations using QualNet 5.0.2 simulation tool. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm to improve the QoS
A Survey on Scheduling in IEEE 802.16 Mesh Mode
Cataloged from PDF version of article.IEEE 802.16 standard (also known as WiMAX)
defines the wireless broadband network technology which aims
to solve the so called last mile problem via providing high
bandwidth Internet even to the rural areas for which the cable
deployment is very costly. The standard mainly focuses on the
MAC and PHY layer issues, supporting two transmission modes:
PMP (Point-to-Multipoint) and mesh modes. Mesh mode is an
optional mode developed as an extension to PMP mode and it
has the advantage of having an improving performance as more
subscribers are added to the system using multi-hop routes. In
802.16 MAC protocol, mesh mode slot allocation and reservation
mechanisms are left open which makes this topic a hot research
area. Hence, the focus of this survey will mostly be on the mesh
mode, and the proposed scheduling algorithms and performance
evaluation methods
Adaptive Communications for Next Generation Broadband Wireless Access Systems
In Broadband Wireless Access systems the efficient use of the resources is crucial from many points of views. From the operator point of view, the bandwidth is a scarce, valuable, and expensive resource which must be exploited in an efficient manner while the Quality of Service (QoS) provided to the users is guaranteed. On the other hand, a tight delay and link quality constraints are imposed on each data flow hence the user experiences the same quality as in fixed networks. During the last few years many techniques have been developed in order to increase the spectral efficiency and the throughput. Among them, the use of multiple antennas at the transmitter and the receiver (exploiting spatial multiplexing) with the joint optimization of the medium access control layer and the physical layer parameters. In this Ph.D. thesis, different adaptive techniques for B3G multicarrier wireless systems are developed and proposed focusing on the SS-MC-MA and the OFDM(A) (IEEE 802.16a/e/m standards) communication schemes. The research lines emphasize into the adaptation of the transmission having (Partial) knowledge of the Channel State Information for both; single antenna and multiple antenna links. For single antenna links, the implementation of a joint resource allocation and scheduling strategy by including adaptive modulation and coding is investigated. A low complexity resource allocation and scheduling algorithm is proposed with the objective to cope with real- and/or non-real- time requirements and constraints. A special attention is also devoted in reducing the required signalling. However, for multiple antenna links, the performance of a proposed adaptive transmit antenna selection scheme jointly with space-time block coding selection is investigated and compared with conventional structures. In this research line, mainly two optimizations criteria are proposed for spatial link adaptation, one based on the minimum error rate for fixed throughput, and the second focused on the maximisation of the rate for fixed error rate. Finally, some indications are given on how to include the spatial adaptation into the investigated and proposed resource allocation and scheduling process developed for single antenna transmission
