Multinet : enabler for next generation enterprise wireless services
Wireless communications are currently experiencing a fast migration toward the beyond third-generation (B3G)/fourth generation (4G) era. This represents a generational change in wireless systems: new capabilities related to mobility and new services support is required and new concepts as individual-centric, user-centric or ambient-aware communications are included. One of the main restrictions associated to wireless technology is mobility management, this feature was not considered in the design phase; for this reason, a complete solution is not already found, although different solutions are proposed and are being proposed. In MULTINET project, features as mobility and multihoming are applied to wireless network to provide the necessary network and application functionality enhancements for seamless data communication mobility considering end-user scenario and preferences. Routage et gestion de la mobilité dans les réseaux personnels
L'objectif de cette thèse est d'étudier des méthodes et des stratégies efficaces pour le routage et la gestion de la mobilité dans le cadre des réseaux personnels. Dans un premier temps, nous proposons le cadre de nos études: Personal Ubiquitous Environments (PUE). Un PUE est constitué d'un ensemble d'utilisateurs ayant des terminaux disposant d'interfaces réseau hétérogènes, et dont l'objectif est de mettre en oeuvre des mécanismes de coopération et de partage des ressources de manière totalement distribuée. Dans ce cadre, la thèse a proposé des solutions innovantes contribuant à améliorer la communication inter et intra réseau personnels. La première contribution porte sur le protocole PNRP (Personal Network Routing Protocol) dont le but est de développer un routage à base de politiques (policy-based routing) pour les environnements personnels. La seconde, intitulée ADD (Adaptive Distributed gateway Discovery), est un mécanisme totalement distribué pour la découverte de multiples chemins vers une passerelle vers un réseau opéré. De plus, étant donné que ces environnements sont hétérogènes par leurs compositions (réseaux d'accès, terminaux ...), une architecture de gestion de la mobilité qui permet une gestion unifiée de la localisation et de la mobilité sans coutures appliquant lénsemble des noeuds a également été traitée. Les résultats d'évaluation par simulation démontrent l'applicabilité et léfficacité des ces protocoles.The aim of this thesis is to investigate methods and strategies for efficient routing and mobility management in personal environments. The concept of Personal Ubiquitous Environments (PUE) is introduced which accommodates heterogeneous devices and access networks of different users and sustain the notion of sharing resources in a distributed manner. A prerequisite for achieving the resource (devices, networks) sharing in personal environments is the deployment of suitable communication protocols which establish efficient multi-hop routes betweens the devices of the PUE. Personal Network Routing Protocol (PNRP) has been developed to perform policy-based routing in personal environments. Moreover, in certain personal networking scenarios, the infrastructure network components (i.e. gateways) are more than one-hop distance from the user's devices; Adaptive Distributed gateway Discovery (ADD) protocol is thereby proposed to efficiently discover the multi-hop routes towards the gateway in a totally distributed manner. All the more, since the personal environments regroups heterogeneous access networks, an efficient mobility management architecture is proposed which offers unified location management and seamless handover experience to dynamic personal nodes. Application priority framework for fixed mobile converged communication networks
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.The current prospects in wired and wireless access networks, it is becoming increasingly important to address potential convergence in order to offer integrated broadband services. These systems will need to offer higher data transmission capacities and long battery life, which is the catalyst for an everincreasing variety of air interface technologies targeting local area to wide area connectivity. Current integrated industrial networks do not offer application aware context delivery and enhanced services for optimised networks. Application aware services provide value-added functionality to business applications by capturing, integrating, and consolidating intelligence about users and their endpoint devices from various points in the network. This thesis mainly intends to resolve the issues related to ubiquitous application aware service, fair allocation of radio access, reduced energy consumption and improved capacity. A technique that measures and evaluates the data rate demand to reduce application response time and queuing delay for multi radio interfaces is proposed. The technique overcomes the challenges of network integration, requiring no user intervention, saving battery life and selecting the radio access connection for the application requested by the end user. This study is split in two parts. The first contribution identifies some constraints of the services towards the application layer in terms of e.g. data rate and signal strength. The objectives are achieved by application controlled handover (ACH) mechanism in order to maintain acceptable data rate for real-time application services. It also looks into the impact of the radio link on the application and identifies elements and parameters like wireless link quality and handover that will influence the application type. It also identifies some enhanced traditional mechanisms such as distance controlled multihop and mesh topology required in order to support energy efficient multimedia applications. The second contribution unfolds an intelligent application priority assignment mechanism (IAPAM) for medical applications using wireless sensor networks. IAPAM proposes and evaluates a technique based on prioritising multiple virtual queues for the critical nature of medical data to improve instant transmission. Various mobility patterns (directed, controlled and random waypoint) has been investigated and compared by simulating IAPAM enabled mobile BWSN. The following topics have been studied, modelled, simulated and discussed in this thesis: 1. Application Controlled Handover (ACH) for multi radios over fibre 2. Power Controlled Scheme for mesh multi radios over fibre using ACH 3. IAPAM for Biomedical Wireless Sensor Networks (BWSN) and impact of mobility over IAPAM enabled BWSN. Extensive simulation studies are performed to analyze and to evaluate the proposed techniques. Simulation results demonstrate significant improvements in multi radios over fibre performance in terms of application response delay and power consumption by upto 75% and 15 % respectively, reduction in traffic loss by upto 53% and reduction in delay for real time application by more than 25% in some cases

wireless communications in the public safety domain, the
potential solution frameworks identified in the HELP project and
an economic analysis to show the benefits in terms of cost saving.

Contribution to resource management in cellular access networks with limited backhaul capacity
La interfaz radio de los sistemas de comunicaciones móviles es normalmente considerada como
la única limitación de capacidad en la red de acceso radio. Sin embargo, a medida que se van
desplegando nuevas y más eficientes interfaces radio, y de que el tráfico de datos y multimedia va
en aumento, existe la creciente preocupación de que la infraestructura de transporte (backhaul) de
la red celular pueda convertirse en el cuello de botella en algunos escenarios. En este contexto, la
tesis se centra en el desarrollo de técnicas de gestión de recursos que consideran de manera
conjunta la gestión de recursos en la interfaz radio y el backhaul. Esto conduce a un nuevo
paradigma donde los recursos del backhaul se consideran no sólo en la etapa de dimensionamiento,
sino que además son incluidos en la problemática de gestión de recursos.
Sobre esta base, el primer objetivo de la tesis consiste en evaluar los requerimientos de
capacidad en las redes de acceso radio que usan IP como tecnología de transporte, de acuerdo a las
recientes tendencias de la arquitectura de red. En particular, se analiza el impacto que tiene una
solución de transporte basada en IP sobre la capacidad de transporte necesaria para satisfacer los
requisitos de calidad de servicio en la red de acceso. La evaluación se realiza en el contexto de la
red de acceso radio de UMTS, donde se proporciona una caracterización detallada de la interfaz
Iub. El análisis de requerimientos de capacidad se lleva a cabo para dos diferentes escenarios:
canales dedicados y canales de alta velocidad. Posteriormente, con el objetivo de aprovechar
totalmente los recursos disponibles en el acceso radio y el backhaul, esta tesis propone un marco de
gestión conjunta de recursos donde la idea principal consiste en incorporar las métricas de la red de
transporte dentro del problema de gestión de recursos. A fin de evaluar los beneficios del marco de
gestión de recursos propuesto, esta tesis se centra en la evaluación del problema de asignación de
base, como estrategia para distribuir el tráfico entre las estaciones base en función de los niveles de
carga tanto en la interfaz radio como en el backhaul. Este problema se analiza inicialmente
considerando una red de acceso radio genérica, mediante la definición de un modelo analítico
basado en cadenas de Markov. Dicho modelo permite calcular la ganancia de capacidad que puede
alcanzar la estrategia de asignación de base propuesta. Posteriormente, el análisis de la estrategia
propuesta se extiende considerando tecnologías específicas de acceso radio. En particular, en el
contexto de redes WCDMA se desarrolla un algoritmo de asignación de base basado en simulatedannealing
cuyo objetivo es maximizar una función de utilidad que refleja el grado de satisfacción
de las asignaciones respecto los recursos radio y transporte. Finalmente, esta tesis aborda el diseño
y evaluación de un algoritmo de asignación de base para los futuros sistemas de banda ancha
basados en OFDMA. En este caso, el problema de asignación de base se modela como un problema
de optimización mediante el uso de un marco de funciones de utilidad y funciones de coste de
recursos. El problema planteado, que considera que existen restricciones de recursos tanto en la
interfaz radio como en el backhaul, es mapeado a un problema de optimización conocido como
Multiple-Choice Multidimensional Knapsack Problem (MMKP). Posteriormente, se desarrolla un
algoritmo de asignación de base heurístico, el cual es evaluado y comparado con esquemas de
asignación basados exclusivamente en criterios radio. El algoritmo concebido se basa en el uso de
los multiplicadores de Lagrange y está diseñado para aprovechar de manera simultánea el balanceo
de carga en la intefaz radio y el backhaul.Postprint (published version
Presence-based integration of wireless sensor network and IP multimedia subsystem : architecture implementation and case studies
Services are the main driving forces of the Telecommunication industry. In old days the traditional networks e.g. PSTN and mobile cellular networks provide basic services to customers such as voice call, SMS. Unlike mobile cellular networks, Internet provides wide variety of services that allow users to communicate in different ways for example E-mail, WWW, VoIP, and Instant Messaging. To benefit from these Internet (IP) based services and to support new value-added services in mobile cellular networks, the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is defined. It aims at convergence of Internet and the cellular world. IMS introduced an architectural framework envisioned by telecom experts for providing wide variety of multimedia services for example Presence, Context-based applications, Conferencing, Video-on-Demand, Instant Messaging to name just a few. The main ingredients of these services are data which can be either provided by users or derived from external sources (other networks). In recent years, Wireless Sensor Networks have emerged as networks of tiny devices, sensor nodes. WSNs are characteristically different from existing networks. In general, a WSN is a data oriented network in which sensors sense physical environment and produce data to deliver it to interested applications. These applications are usually external to WSN and reside in an external network (e.g. IMS). The applications or services use this physical data to deliver enhanced services such as context-based services to mobile users. The challenge is to integrate WSN with IMS so that the WSN data can be accessible to IMS services or applications. This thesis exploits a presence-based approach for the integration of WSN and IMS network. A standard interface for data exchange between WSN and IMS has been devised in the Telecommunication Service Engineering group. The data exchange between WSN and IMS services/applications is realized as a publish-subscribe mechanism. In publish-subscribe mechanism the applications subscribe to WSN services (data) and get notified when sensors report any data while the WSN is acting as publisher to publish sensor data to IMS. The presence-based WSN -- IMS architecture provides an abstraction to services and applications for accessing variety of sensed data from different WSNs. The presence based WSN-IMS architecture realizes two main architectural entities, the integrated WSN-IMS gateway and an IMS extended presence server. These two architectural entities play a key role in interworking of WSN and IMS network. The overall architecture has been implemented and tested with prototype applications as well as a performance evaluation has been done to see the efficiency and applicability of the integrated architectur
