QoS based Web Service Selection and Multi-Criteria Decision Making Methods
With the continuing proliferation of web services offering similar efficacies, around the globe, it has become a challenge for a user to select the best web service. In literature, this challenge is exhibited as a 0-1 knapsack problem of multiple dimensions and multiple choices, known as an NP-hard problem. Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) method is one of the ways which suits this problem and helps the users to select the best service based on his/her preferences. In this regard, this paper assists the researchers in two conducts: Firstly, to witness the performance of different MCDM methods for large number of alternatives and attributes. Secondly, to perceive the possible deviation in the ranking obtained from these methods. For carrying out the experimental evaluation, in this paper, five different well-known MCDM methods have been implemented and compared over two different scenarios of 50 as well as 100 web services, where their ranking is defined on an account of several Quality of Service (QoS) parameters. Additionally, a Spearman’s Rank Correlation Coefficient has been calculated for different pairs of MCDM methods in order to provide a clear depiction of MCDM methods showing the least deviation in their ranking. An infrastructure service recommendation system for cloud applications with real-time QoS requirement constraints
The proliferation of cloud computing has revolutionized the hosting and delivery of Internet-based application services. However, with the constant launch of new cloud services and capabilities almost every month by both big (e.g., Amazon Web Service and Microsoft Azure) and small companies (e.g., Rackspace and Ninefold), decision makers (e.g., application developers and chief information officers) are likely to be overwhelmed by choices available. The decision-making problem is further complicated due to heterogeneous service configurations and application provisioning QoS constraints. To address this hard challenge, in our previous work, we developed a semiautomated, extensible, and ontology-based approach to infrastructure service discovery and selection only based on design-time constraints (e.g., the renting cost, the data center location, the service feature, etc.). In this paper, we extend our approach to include the real-time (run-time) QoS (the end-to-end message latency and the end-to-end message throughput) in the decision-making process. The hosting of next-generation applications in the domain of online interactive gaming, large-scale sensor analytics, and real-time mobile applications on cloud services necessitates the optimization of such real-time QoS constraints for meeting service-level agreements. To this end, we present a real-time QoS-aware multicriteria decision-making technique that builds over the well-known analytic hierarchy process method. The proposed technique is applicable to selecting Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud offers, and it allows users to define multiple design-time and real-time QoS constraints or requirements. These requirements are then matched against our knowledge base to compute the possible best fit combinations of cloud services at the IaaS layer. The take-up of such applications will inevitably depend on their ability to produce an acceptable level of service over congested and unreliable public networks. However, although the problem of multimedia application-level performance is closely linked to both the user perspective of the experience as well as to the service provided by the underlying network, it is rarely studied from an integrated viewpoint. To alleviate this problem, we propose an intelligent mechanism that integrates user-related requirements with the more technical characterization of quality of service, obtaining a priority order of low-level quality of service parameters, which would ensure that user-centred quality of perception is maintained at an optimum level. We show how our framework is capable of suggesting appropriately tailored transmission protocols, by incorporating user requirements in the remote delivery of e-health solutions
