    Data Traffic Model in Machine to Machine Communications over 5G Network Slicing

    The recent advancements in cellular communication domain have resulted in the emergence of Machine-to-Machine applications, in support of the wide range and coverage provision, low costs, and high mobility. 5G network standards represent a promising technology to support the future of Machine-to-Machine data traffic. In recent years, Human-Type-Communication traffic has seen exponential growth over cellular networks, which resulted in increasing the capacity and higher data rates. These networks are expected to face challenges such as explosion of the data traffic due to the future of smart devices data traffic with various Quality of Service requirements. This paper proposes a novel data traffic aggregation model and algorithm along with a new 5G network slicing based on classification and measuring the data traffic to satisfy Quality of Service for smart systems in a smart city environment. In our proposal, 5G radio resources are efficiently utilized as the smallest unit of a physical resource block in a relay node by aggregating the data traffic of several Machine-to-Machine devices as separate slices based on Quality of Service for each application.     In emergency and crisis situations (ECS) like earthquakes, tsunamis, terrorist attacks, it is very important that communication facilities are operative to provide services both to rescue teams and civilians. In ECS it is very common that communication premises are often unable to provide services, either due to physical damages or traffic overload. In such a case there is the need for rapid reestablishment of communication services. In this paper the communication services that can be exploited for ECS mitigation are discussed. The usage scenarios of such services are studied. Following that and looking from a network perspective view an ECS communication network architecture is presented. This architecture aims to provide seamless interoperability of varies communication technologies often present in ECS to provide an ECS communication solution. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland

    Quality of Service optimisation framework for Next Generation Networks

    Within recent years, the concept of Next Generation Networks (NGN) has become widely accepted within the telecommunication area, in parallel with the migration of telecommunication networks from traditional circuit-switched technologies such as ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) towards packet-switched NGN. In this context, SIP (Session Initiation Protocol), originally developed for Internet use only, has emerged as the major signalling protocol for multimedia sessions in IP (Internet Protocol) based NGN. One of the traditional limitations of IP when faced with the challenges of real-time communications is the lack of quality support at the network layer. In line with NGN specification work, international standardisation bodies have defined a sophisticated QoS (Quality of Service) architecture for NGN, controlling IP transport resources and conventional IP QoS mechanisms through centralised higher layer network elements via cross-layer signalling. Being able to centrally control QoS conditions for any media session in NGN without the imperative of a cross-layer approach would result in a feasible and less complex NGN architecture. Especially the demand for additional network elements would be decreased, resulting in the reduction of system and operational costs in both, service and transport infrastructure. This thesis proposes a novel framework for QoS optimisation for media sessions in SIP-based NGN without the need for cross-layer signalling. One key contribution of the framework is the approach to identify and logically group media sessions that encounter similar QoS conditions, which is performed by applying pattern recognition and clustering techniques. Based on this novel methodology, the framework provides functions and mechanisms for comprehensive resource-saving QoS estimation, adaptation of QoS conditions, and support of Call Admission Control. The framework can be integrated with any arbitrary SIP-IP-based real-time communication infrastructure, since it does not require access to any particular QoS control or monitoring functionalities provided within the IP transport network. The proposed framework concept has been deployed and validated in a prototypical simulation environment. Simulation results show MOS (Mean Opinion Score) improvement rates between 53 and 66 percent without any active control of transport network resources. Overall, the proposed framework comes as an effective concept for central controlled QoS optimisation in NGN without the need for cross-layer signalling. As such, by either being run stand-alone or combined with conventional QoS control mechanisms, the framework provides a comprehensive basis for both the reduction of complexity and mitigation of issues coming along with QoS provision in NGN

    Hybrid wireless broadband networks

    A hybrid system is an integration of two or more different systems, particularly in this thesis referring to wireless broadband networks. However, to provide end-to-end quality of service (QoS) in a hybrid system is a challenging task due to different protocol in each system. In this thesis, we aim to improve the overall performance of hybrid networks in a disaster management by addressing the challenges as well as the problems in a homogeneous network. Such an approach allows more efficient multi-parameter optimization and significant improvements in the overall system performance. More specifically, we introduce two novel algorithms. The first is the novel end-to-end QoS algorithm for hybrid wireless broadband networks. We proposed the end-to-end QoS maps based on particular chosen parameters and analyse the simulation results. The QoS maps are applied to a few scenarios, and the performance evaluation of the constructed network is presented. Based on the results obtained by software simulation tools, the performance validation shows that the hybrid network has specific advantages and constraints in terms of number of users, preference, coverage and applications. The second algorithm presented is the novel in users’ application algorithm, the purpose of which is to optimize bandwidth for first responders applied in the PPDR project under grant agreement EU FP7 SEC PPDR-TC. This algorithm is responsible for incorporating more users and different levels of background load to a hybrid network. The proposed method analyses both positive and negative outcomes based on the results obtained. This algorithm has been presented in the PPDR project

    A novel downlink semi-persistent packet scheduling scheme for VoLTE traffic over heterogeneous wireless networks

    Long Term Evolution (LTE) is becoming the first choice of Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) when constructing a wireless network infrastructure because of its high data rate, high throughput and low latency. These significant advancements are necessary for satisfying the delivery of a wide-range of mobile applications and managed network resources. However, deploying a new LTE network or a transition from current legacy cellular networks to LTE can take several years to roll out. In the meantime, working in a heterogeneous wireless communications network looks inevitable. This paper investigates Voice over LTE (VoLTE) Quality of Service (QoS) under a heterogeneous wireless communication scenario. The contributions of this paper are twofold. First, a novel Downlink (DL) semi-persistent scheduling scheme is proposed to reduce VoLTE end-to-end delay and increase system capacity. Second, an extensive network simulation model has been designed and implemented to evaluate the proposed scheme. The performance of the proposed scheme is compared with the performance of two relevant and well-known DL packet scheduling methods. The simulation results confirm that the proposed scheme is able to reduce VoLTE end-to-end delay and achieve a better system capacity than current methods, and maintain the desired VoLTE QoS

    Effective Project Management Office Processes and Technology Transfer: Implementation of an Avaya Voice Over Internet Protocol Telephony System in Mexico

    This project-thesis examines the technical requirements of a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) solution and is it advantageous for a Multinational Corporation (MNC) to utilize the Project Management Office (PMO) processes as defined by the Project Management Institute, Inc. (PMI) to implement Information Technology (IT) projects and to transfer technology know how knowledge to its subsidiary in Mexico. To answer this question, an assessment of Cisco and Avaya VoIP telephony systems was completed. The assessment revealed Avaya offered more enhanced features and applications. The Avaya Communications Manager (CM) 450 gateway IP telephony system was selected. PMO processes were utilized to implement the G450 in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. The project results revealed PMO processes were effective in successfully managing the implementation of the Avaya IP telephony system and for transferring technology know how to the Mexico subsidiary. In addition, the Avaya G450 features and applications improved business efficiencies and reduced communications expenses
