Pattern tree-based XOLAP rollup operator for XML complex hierarchies
With the rise of XML as a standard for representing business data, XML data
warehousing appears as a suitable solution for decision-support applications.
In this context, it is necessary to allow OLAP analyses on XML data cubes.
Thus, XQuery extensions are needed. To define a formal framework and allow
much-needed performance optimizations on analytical queries expressed in
XQuery, defining an algebra is desirable. However, XML-OLAP (XOLAP) algebras
from the literature still largely rely on the relational model. Hence, we
propose in this paper a rollup operator based on a pattern tree in order to
handle multidimensional XML data expressed within complex hierarchies
Cadabra: reference guide and tutorial
Cadabra is a computer algebra system for the manipulation of tensorial mathematical expressions such as they occur in “field theory problems”. It is aimed at, but not necessarily restricted to, high-energy physicists. It is constructed as a simple tree-manipulating core, a large collection of standalone algorithmic modules which act on the expression tree, and a set of modules responsible for output of nodes in the tree. All of these parts are written in C++. The input and output formats closely follow TEX, which in many cases means that cadabra is much simpler to use than other similar programs. It intentionally does not contain its own programming language; instead, new functionality is added by writing new modules in C++
06472 Abstracts Collection - XQuery Implementation Paradigms
From 19.11.2006 to 22.11.2006, the Dagstuhl Seminar 06472 ``XQuery Implementation Paradigms'' was held in the International Conference and Research Center (IBFI), Schloss Dagstuhl. During the seminar, several participants presented their current research, and ongoing work and open problems were discussed. Abstracts of the presentations given during the seminar as well as abstracts of seminar results and ideas are put together in this paper. The first section describes the seminar topics and goals in general. Links to extended abstracts or full papers are provided, if available
Layers of generality and types of generalization in pattern activities
Pattern generalization is considered one of the prominent routes for in-troducing students to algebra. However, not all generalizations are al-gebraic. In the use of pattern generalization as a route to algebra, we —teachers and educators— thus have to remain vigilant in order not to confound algebraic generalizations with other forms of dealing with the general. But how to distinguish between algebraic and non-algebraic generalizations? On epistemological and semiotic grounds, in this arti-cle I suggest a characterization of algebraic generalizations. This char-acterization helps to bring about a typology of algebraic and arithmetic generalizations. The typology is illustrated with classroom examples
Representations of stream processors using nested fixed points
We define representations of continuous functions on infinite streams of discrete values, both in the case of discrete-valued functions, and in the case of stream-valued functions. We define also an operation on the representations of two continuous functions between streams that yields a representation of their composite. In the case of discrete-valued functions, the representatives are well-founded (finite-path) trees of a certain kind. The underlying idea can be traced back to Brouwer's justification of bar-induction, or to Kreisel and Troelstra's elimination of choice-sequences. In the case of stream-valued functions, the representatives are non-wellfounded trees pieced together in a coinductive fashion from well-founded trees. The definition requires an alternating fixpoint construction of some ubiquity
A moonshine dialogue in mathematical physics
Phys and Math are two colleagues at the University of Sa{\c c}enbon (Crefan
Kingdom), dialoguing about the remarkable efficiency of mathematics for
physics. They talk about the notches on the Ishango bone, the various uses of
psi in maths and physics, they arrive at dessins d'enfants, moonshine concepts,
Rademacher sums and their significance in the quantum world. You should not
miss their eccentric proposal of relating Bell's theorem to the Baby Monster
group. Their hyperbolic polygons show a considerable singularity/cusp structure
that our modern age of computers is able to capture. Henri Poincar{\'e} would
have been happy to see it.Comment: new version expanded for publication in Mathematics (MDPI), special
