Software tools for conducting bibliometric analysis in science: An up-to-date review

    Get PDF
Bibliometrics has become an essential tool for assessing and analyzing the output of scientists, cooperation between universities, the effect of state-owned science funding on national research and development performance and educational efficiency, among other applications. Therefore, professionals and scientists need a range of theoretical and practical tools to measure experimental data. This review aims to provide an up-to-date review of the various tools available for conducting bibliometric and scientometric analyses, including the sources of data acquisition, performance analysis and visualization tools. The included tools were divided into three categories: general bibliometric and performance analysis, science mapping analysis, and libraries; a description of all of them is provided. A comparative analysis of the database sources support, pre-processing capabilities, analysis and visualization options were also provided in order to facilitate its understanding. Although there are numerous bibliometric databases to obtain data for bibliometric and scientometric analysis, they have been developed for a different purpose. The number of exportable records is between 500 and 50,000 and the coverage of the different science fields is unequal in each database. Concerning the analyzed tools, Bibliometrix contains the more extensive set of techniques and suitable for practitioners through Biblioshiny. VOSviewer has a fantastic visualization and is capable of loading and exporting information from many sources. SciMAT is the tool with a powerful pre-processing and export capability. In views of the variability of features, the users need to decide the desired analysis output and chose the option that better fits into their aims

A Review of Theory and Practice in Scientometrics

    Get PDF
Scientometrics is the study of the quantitative aspects of the process of science as a communication system. It is centrally, but not only, concerned with the analysis of citations in the academic literature. In recent years it has come to play a major role in the measurement and evaluation of research performance. In this review we consider: the historical development of scientometrics, sources of citation data, citation metrics and the “laws" of scientometrics, normalisation, journal impact factors and other journal metrics, visualising and mapping science, evaluation and policy, and future developments

Open Access: Science Publishing as Science Publishing Should Be

    Get PDF
Full and unimpeded access (Open Access) to science literature is needed. It is not provided by the traditional subscription-based publishing model. Instead of criticizing Open Access and attacking its proponents, traditional publishers should make imaginative and innovative efforts to build their businesses around the needs of their customers rather than around their desire to continue a model that may be lucrative, but that is no longer satisfactory to science or society

A review of the characteristics of 108 author-level bibliometric indicators

    Get PDF
An increasing demand for bibliometric assessment of individuals has led to a growth of new bibliometric indicators as well as new variants or combinations of established ones. The aim of this review is to contribute with objective facts about the usefulness of bibliometric indicators of the effects of publication activity at the individual level. This paper reviews 108 indicators that can potentially be used to measure performance on the individual author level, and examines the complexity of their calculations in relation to what they are supposed to reflect and ease of end-user application.Comment: to be published in Scientometrics, 201

Aims: The aim of this study is present a general overview of the journal from 1965 to 2018 using bibliometric indicators. Methods: The data analyzed in this study, was extracted from the Scopus database. The information was exported in RIS file format to the Harzing’s Publish or Perish and VOSviewer software for data analysis. Results: The number of documents published in APH during the study period was 1868, the most frequently published document type was „original article”. Articles published APH were cited 2555 times overall, averaging 1.37 citations per each paper. The highest number of articles published in collaboration was in 2007 and 2018 (16.7%). Overall, the period between 1981-2000 was the most fruitful, while the following years saw a decline in the number of articles. Clusters and co-occurrence networks of the authors keyowrds of the published documents were generated. Conclusion: APH manages to reach a very wide audience of the Hungarian scientific community of researchers. Additionally, an evolution on the research topics covered by the journal could be observed, providing a contemporary overview of the pharmaceutical sciences. The submission of additional articles to the journal is highly encouraged to widen the reach of this journal towards international audiences

Full Report: Scholarly Communication: Academic Values and Sustainable Models

This report presents five thickly-described interdisciplinary case studies that explore academic value systems as they influence publishing behavior and attitudes of University of California, Berkeley faculty. The case studies are based on direct interviews with relevant stakeholders -- faculty, advancement reviewers, librarians, and editors -- in five fields: chemical engineering, anthropology, law and economics, English-language literature, and biostatistics. The results of the study strongly confirm the vital role of peer review in faculty attitudes and actual publishing behavior. There is much more experimentation, however, with regard to means of in-progress communication, where single means of publication and communication are not fixed so deeply in values and tradition as they are for final, archival publication. We conclude that approaches that try to "move" faculty and deeply embedded value systems directly toward new forms of archival, "final" publication are destined largely to failure in the short-term. From our perspective, a more promising route is to (1) examine the needs of scholarly researchers for both final and in-progress communications, and (2) determine how those needs are likely to influence future scenarios in a range of disciplinary areas
