    Visual Analytics of Gaze Data with Standard Multimedia Player

    With the increasing number of studies, where participants’ eye movements are tracked while watching videos, the volume of gaze data records is growing tremendously. Unfortunately, in most cases, such data are collected in separate files in custom-made or proprietary data formats. These data are difficult to access even for experts and effectively inaccessible for non-experts. Normally expensive or custom-made software is necessary for their analysis. We address this problem by using existing multimedia container formats for distributing and archiving eye-tracking and gaze data bundled with the stimuli data. We define an exchange format that can be interpreted by standard multimedia players and can be streamed via the Internet. We convert several gaze data sets into our format, demonstrating the feasibility of our approach and allowing to visualize these data with standard multimedia players. We also introduce two VLC player add-ons, allowing for further visual analytics. We discuss the benefit of gaze data in a multimedia container and explain possible visual analytics approaches based on our implementations, converted datasets, and first user interviews

As the production of multimedia content such as photographs and videos becomes accessible to more people every year, so does the amount of digital content increase exponentially. Consequently, it becomes a hard task to create systems in order to provide efficient storing and browsing of multimedia content. Multimedia Web archives are one of the most popular solutions found for these issues. By providing organized and connected information storage with efficient browsing and social networking features, these systems become the main platforms used to store and share photographs and videos in the internet. This work is done in the scope of the TKB project: Transmedia Knowledge Base for Contemporary Dance and the goal of this thesis is to develop a system for multimedia information storage and relational content navigation. The analysis of multimedia archiving systems done throughout this thesis extends to those specific for Contemporary dance as it is one of the main focus of the work. The contents which will be integrated in the archive include typical multimedia information such as images and videos, as well as annotated videos exported from specific platforms. Connecting all the information within the archive through taxonomy and content hierarchy allows the definition of the intended relational approach.     Collaborative Workspaces within Distributed Virtual Environments

    In warfare, be it a training simulation or actual combat, a commander\u27s time is one of the most valuable and fleeting resources of a military unit. Thus, it is natural for a unit to have a plethora of personnel to analyze and filter information to the decision-maker. This dynamic exchange of ideas between analyst and commander is currently not available within the distributed interactive simulation (DIS) community. This lack of exchange limits the usefulness of the DIS experience to the commander and his troops. This thesis addresses the commander\u27s isolation problem through the integration of a collaborative workspace within AFIT\u27s Synthetic BattleBridge (SBB) as a technique to improve situational awareness. The SBB\u27s Collaborative Workspace enhances battlespace awareness through CSCW (computer supported cooperative work) enabling communication technologies. The SBB\u27s Collaborative Workspace allows the user to interact with other SBB users through the transmission and reception of public bulletins, private email, real-time chat sessions, shared viewpoints, shared video, and shared annotations to the virtual environment. Collaborative communication between SBB occurs through the use of standard and experimental DIS-compliant protocol data units. The SBB\u27s Collaborative Workspace gives the battlespace commander the widest range of communication options available within a DIS virtual environment today

    Social video: A collaborative video annotation environment to support E-learning

    Our social video system allows users to enrich video by additional information like external websites, hypertext, images, other videos, or communication channels. Users are able to annotate whole videos, scenes, and objects in the video. We do not focus on a single user accessing the system but on multiple users watching the video and accessing the annotations others have created. Our web-based prototype differs from classical hypervideo systems because it allows annotation (authoring) and navigation in videos by focusing on collaboration and communication between the users. The prototype is integrated into the online social network Facebook and was evaluated with more than 300 users. The evaluation analyzes the usage of the system with a learning scenario in mind and indicates a learning success of users

    Spatially Aware Computing for Natural Interaction

    Spatial information refers to the location of an object in a physical or digital world. Besides, it also includes the relative position of an object related to other objects around it. In this dissertation, three systems are designed and developed. All of them apply spatial information in different fields. The ultimate goal is to increase the user friendliness and efficiency in those applications by utilizing spatial information. The first system is a novel Web page data extraction application, which takes advantage of 2D spatial information to discover structured records from a Web page. The extracted information is useful to re-organize the layout of a Web page to fit mobile browsing. The second application utilizes the 3D spatial information of a mobile device within a large paper-based workspace to implement interactive paper that combines the merits of paper documents and mobile devices. This application can overlay digital information on top of a paper document based on the location of a mobile device within a workspace. The third application further integrates 3D space information with sound detection to realize an automatic camera management system. This application automatically controls multiple cameras in a conference room, and creates an engaging video by intelligently switching camera shots among meeting participants based on their activities. Evaluations have been made on all three applications, and the results are promising.     New Generation of Instrumented Ranges: Enabling Automated Performance Analysis

    Military training conducted on physical ranges that match a unit’s future operational environment provides an invaluable experience. Today, to conduct a training exercise while ensuring a unit’s performance is closely observed, evaluated, and reported on in an After Action Review, the unit requires a number of instructors to accompany the different elements. Training organized on ranges for urban warfighting brings an additional level of complexity—the high level of occlusion typical for these environments multiplies the number of evaluators needed. While the units have great need for such training opportunities, they may not have the necessary human resources to conduct them successfully. In this paper we report on our US Navy/ONR-sponsored project aimed at a new generation of instrumented ranges, and the early results we have achieved. We suggest a radically different concept: instead of recording multiple video streams that need to be reviewed and evaluated by a number of instructors, our system will focus on capturing dynamic individual warfighter pose data and performing automated performance evaluation. We will use an in situ network of automatically-controlled pan-tilt-zoom video cameras and personal position and orientation sensing devices. Our system will record video, reconstruct dynamic 3D individual poses, analyze, recognize events, evaluate performances, generate reports, provide real-time free exploration of recorded data, and even allow the user to generate ‘what-if’ scenarios that were never recorded. The most direct benefit for an individual unit will be the ability to conduct training with fewer human resources, while having a more quantitative account of their performance (dispersion across the terrain, ‘weapon flagging’ incidents, number of patrols conducted). The instructors will have immediate feedback on some elements of the unit’s performance. Having data sets for multiple units will enable historical trend analysis, thus providing new insights and benefits for the entire service.Office of Naval Researc

    A semi-automatic 2D/3D annotation framework for the geometric analysis of heritage artefacts

    International audienceDocumentation and monitoring of heritage objects involve many actors on multidisciplinary aspects. The progress made over the years in the field of digital technologies has enabled many tools for analysis, management and dissemination of information gathered around an object. These tools must allow users to semantically describe the object while allowing them to grasp its morphological complexity and the heterogeneity of the available analysis supports. This article introduces an approach for the semantic annotation of heritage objects by using the bijective relationship that can be established between a 3D representation of an object and the set of oriented images towards it, while maintaining a continuum of information between all phases of observation and description, from acquisition to visualization of semantically enriched representations. The main idea is to offer a versatile environment to help extraction of relevant information from images using geometric descriptors and semi-automatic point cloud processing methods
