Prototypes from standard user interface management systems
Oregon Speedcode Universe (OSU) is a software development system employing on-screen editing of standard graphical user interface objects, prototyping, program generation, and automatic analysis tools which are typically used to accelerate the production of running applications. A programmer uses OSU to design and implement all user interface objects such as menus, windows, dialogs, and icons. These objects are then incorporated into an application-specific sequence which mimics the application during program development, and performs the desired operations of the application during program execution. Experimental results suggest that the techniques employed by OSU can be used to develop 50-90% of an application without explicit programming yielding productivity improvements of 2-10 fold.Keywords: rapid prototyping, program generation, 4GL, software development, user interface management, software tools, programming-in-the-large, object-oriented design, direct manipulation, visual programming

into services ready for broadcast. This is achieved by a series of tools that de-skill and speed-up the process of creating digital TV user interfaces (UI) and applications for mobile terminals.
The benefits of rapid prototyping are essential for the production of these new types of services, and are therefore discussed in the first section of this paper.
In the following sections, an overview of the
operation of content, service, creation and management sub-systems is presented, which illustrates why these tools compose an important and integral part of a system responsible of creating, delivering and managing converged broadcast and telecommunications services.
The next section examines a number of metadata
languages candidates for describing the iTV services user interface and the schema language adopted in this project. A detailed description of the operation of the two tools is provided to offer an insight of how they can be used to de-skill and speed-up the process of creating digital TV user interfaces and applications for mobile terminals. Finally, representative broadcast oriented and telecommunication oriented converged service components are also introduced, demonstrating how these tools have been used to generate different types of services
TICAL - a web-tool for multivariate image clustering and data topology preserving visualization
In life science research bioimaging is often used to study two kinds of features in a sample simultaneously: morphology and co-location of molecular components. While bioimaging technology is rapidly proposing and improving new multidimensional imaging platforms, bioimage informatics has to keep pace in order to develop algorithmic approaches to support biology experts in the complex task of data analysis. One particular problem is the availability and applicability of sophisticated image analysis algorithms via the web so different users can apply the same algorithms to their data (sometimes even to the same data to get the same results) and independently from her/his whereabouts and from the technical features of her/his computer. In this paper we describe TICAL, a visual data mining approach to multivariate microscopy analysis which can be applied fully through the web.We describe the algorithmic approach, the software concept and present results obtained for different example images
Wicked Problems and Gnarly Results: Reflecting on Design and Evaluation Methods for Idiosyncratic Personal Information Management Tasks
