    Security and Online learning: to protect or prohibit

    The rapid development of online learning is opening up many new learning opportunities. Yet, with this increased potential come a myriad of risks. Usable security systems are essential as poor usability in security can result in excluding intended users while allowing sensitive data to be released to unacceptable recipients. This chapter presents findings concerned with usability for two security issues: authentication mechanisms and privacy. Usability issues such as memorability, feedback, guidance, context of use and concepts of information ownership are reviewed within various environments. This chapter also reviews the roots of these usability difficulties in the culture clash between the non-user-oriented perspective of security and the information exchange culture of the education domain. Finally an account is provided of how future systems can be developed which maintain security and yet are still usable

    Factors Affecting Password Manager Adoption among European University Students

    Password is the most common method of proving the identity on various online services. More and more sensitive information gets stored online: banking details, healthcare data, educational and corporate data. Due to the increasing amount of accounts, users face the challenge of creating and remembering various passwords of high complexity. To deal with such challenges and improve password management practices, security professionals suggest the use of password managers, also known as password managers. However, this tool has not gained much popularity among the end-users. The purpose of this thesis is to identify and examine the factors that may affect the adoption of password managers. In this regard, I have proposed a research model based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and Task Technology Fit (TTF) models. Data (N=265) was collected from students enrolled at one of European universities using a online survey. For this purpose, data was collected using mailing lists and Facebook page of a crowdsourcing site. PLS-SEM was used to test the proposed model with a usable data set of N= 265.analyze the data sample collected with the means of a questionnaire. The results of the analysis show that performance expectancy and social influence affect behavioral intentions. Task technology fit, facilitating conditions, and behavioral intentions directly affect password manager adoptions, while performance expectancy, social influence, effort expectancy, and technology characteristics are the main factors that affect password manager adoption among European students indirectly

    Usability and Security in Medication. Administration Applications

    The traditional process of filling the medicine trays and dispensing the medicines to the patients in the hospitals is manually done by reading the printed paper medicinechart. This process can be very strenuous and error-prone, given the number of sub-tasksinvolved in the entire workflow and the dynamic nature of the work environment.Therefore, efforts are being made to digitalise the medication dispensation process byintroducing a mobile application called Smart Dosing application. The introduction ofthe Smart Dosing application into hospital workflow raises security concerns and callsfor security requirement analysis. This thesis is written as a part of the smart medication management project at EmbeddedSystems Laboratory, A˚bo Akademi University. The project aims at digitising the medicine dispensation process by integrating information from various health systems, and making them available through the Smart Dosing application. This application is intended to be used on a tablet computer which will be incorporated on the medicine tray. The smart medication management system include the medicine tray, the tablet device, and the medicine cups with the cup holders. Introducing the Smart Dosing application should not interfere with the existing process carried out by the nurses, and it should result in minimum modifications to the tray design and the workflow. The re-designing of the tray would include integrating the device running the application into the tray in a manner that the users find it convenient and make less errors while using it. The main objective of this thesis is to enhance the security of the hospital medicine dispensation process by ensuring the security of the Smart Dosing application at various levels. The methods used for writing this thesis was to analyse how the tray design, and the application user interface design can help prevent errors and what secure technology choices have to be made before starting the development of the next prototype of the Smart Dosing application. The thesis first understands the context of the use of the application, the end-users and their needs, and the errors made in everyday medication dispensation workflow by continuous discussions with the nursing researchers. The thesis then gains insight to the vulnerabilities, threats and risks of using mobile application in hospital medication dispensation process. The resulting list of security requirements was made by analysing the previously built prototype of the Smart Dosing application, continuous interactive discussions with the nursing researchers, and an exhaustive state-of-the-art study on security risks of using mobile applications in hospital context. The thesis also uses Octave Allegro method to make the readers understand the likelihood and impact of threats, and what steps should be taken to prevent or fix them. The security requirements obtained, as a result, are a starting point for the developers of the next iteration of the prototype for the Smart Dosing application.Siirretty Doriast

    Why Users (Don’t) Use Password Managers at a Large Educational Institution

    We quantitatively investigated the current state of Password Manager (PM) usage and general password habits at a large, private university in the United States. Building on prior qualitative findings from SOUPS 2019, we survey n=277 faculty, staff, and students, finding that 77% of our participants already use PMs, but users of third-party PMs, as opposed to browser-based PMs, were significantly less likely to reuse their passwords across accounts. The largest factor encouraging PM adoption is perceived ease-of-use, indicating that communication and institutional campaigns should focus more on usability factors. Additionally, our work indicates the need for design improvements for browser-based PMs to encourage less password reuse as they are more widely adopted

    Digital forensics is essentially synonymous with computer forensics, but the term "digital forensics" is generally used for the technical review of all devices that have the ability to store data. Today, digital criminology is challenged in cloud computing. The first problem is to understand why and how criminal and social actions are so unique and complex. The second problem is the lack of accurate scientific tools for forensic medicine in cyberspace. So far, no complete tools or explanations for criminology have been provided in the virtual infrastructure, and no training for security researchers has been provided in detail. Therefore, the author of the present descriptive-analytical research is based on library resources and using fish taking tools. To investigate suspicious cases related to cyberspace, criminologists must be well-equipped with technical and legal issues to deal with. In this article, we analyze digital criminology and its role in judicial law. The benefit of computer forensic knowledge is not only an indispensable necessity for security and judicial institutions, but also professional users and owners of computer systems, systems and networks must be fully aware of and properly comply with its legal and technical requirements.El análisis forense digital es esencialmente sinónimo de análisis forense informático, pero el término "análisis forense digital" se utiliza generalmente para la revisión técnica de todos los dispositivos que tienen la capacidad de almacenar datos. Hoy en día, la criminología digital se enfrenta al desafío de la computación en la nube. El primer problema es comprender por qué y cómo las acciones criminales y sociales son tan únicas y complejas. El segundo problema es la falta de herramientas científicas precisas para la medicina forense en el ciberespacio. Hasta ahora, no se han proporcionado herramientas completas o explicaciones para la criminología en la infraestructura virtual, y no se ha proporcionado ninguna formación detallada a los investigadores de seguridad. Por lo tanto, el autor de la presente investigación descriptivo-analítica se basa en los recursos de la biblioteca y en el uso de herramientas de pesca.
