The study adopted descriptive survey research design, that traced the history of cell phones in Nigeria. The population of 3000 registered student’s library users was studied. Sample size of 100 respondents was used. Accidental sampling technique was used to collect data. A self-constructed questionnaire, validated by two experts from the university library was used for data collection from the sampled students. The reliability of the instrument was tasted in Imo State University Library using Cronbach Alpha formula. Reliability coefficient of 0.88 was obtained. Simple percentages and frequency was used for data analysis. The results of the findings revealed that all the student’s population had cell phone, and they use cell phone mainly for communication. It was also discovered that the use of cell phone actually causes distractions in the library. Finally, students do not want a ban placed on the use of cell phones in the library. Based on the findings, recommendations include among others that the library authorities should place instructions on notice boards and some strategic places within the library banning cell phone use by students when the library is in session

Many educators believe that Nigeria is poised for positive educational transformation due to the rapid and widespread uptake of mobile phones across the country over the last few years. Various attempts have been made by researchers and educators at using mobile phones in both formal and non-formal learning and Open and Distance Learning (ODL) settings in the country. This has resulted in increasing number of studies on mobile learning in recent years and this has lent credence to the widely held view that mobile phones open up new vistas for extending the scope, scale and quality of education in Nigeria. Therefore this paper focused on mobile phones and Adult education in Nigeria: prospects and future challenges. It discussed various views by educators and researchers on the use of mobile phones in teaching-learning process in Nigeria- Relevance and challenges of using mobile phones were discussed extensively. The concept of Adult Education and future challenges were considered appropriately. Also, it was recommended that adult learners should be exposed to new innovations of the 21st century which was regarded as century of knowledge and that the Adult Education curriculum should be incorporated using mobile phone for instructions. Conclusion were equally made that mobile phone be incorporated into adult education, for effective global development) Keywords: Mobile Phones, Adult Education, Literacy and Numeracy, Open and Distance Learnin

This study attempted to investigate how para-professional librarians (Library Officers cadre and only Assistant Library Officers) in Olabisi Onabanjo University (O.O.U) Library, Nigeria used smart phone to embrace academic library services. A questionnaire and an interview schedule were used to collect data for the study. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The study revealed that all the library paraprofessional staff had and used smart phones for personal, official and library services, but the use for library services and routines (across the items for library services) were on a lower side. The study further revealed that gender of para-professional librarians does not influence smart phone use amongst other findings. The study thus recommended provision of good telecommunication facilities, integration of full mobile library applications and services into academic library functions and services and training of library staff for effective deployment of phone use for library services amongst others. The study is titled ‘Use of Mobile Phones for Research among Undergraduates in two Polytechnic Libraries in Nigeria. The study seeks to establish if students who make use of the polytechnic libraries studied do use their mobile phones for research purposes, their reasons for preferring to use their mobile phones to traditional/conventional information resources as well as the constraints they encountered when accessing information. The survey method was adopted in data collection. The validated questionnaire were administered to the respondents within a period of week. Findings show that undergraduate students who use the polytechnic libraries studied make use of their mobile phones for research occasionally. It was revealed that lack of current/ relevant resources in libraries, saving of time and cost of travelling to other libraries for research, low level of satisfaction derived from available resources as well as lack of internet facilities in libraries are reasons why they make use of mobile phones for research. Also, high cost of downloading online resources, incompatibility of software/format of online resources as well as insecurity of sites which causes damages to the phones were identified as constraints students encountered when using mobile phones. The following were recommended in line with the findings of the study: use of anti-virus software, installation of internet facility in libraries, use of compatible phones/ software, saving of downloaded resources as well as use of mobile phones that are user friendly. The bottom-line of the paper is that the use of mobile phones has helped to improve students’ access to current and reliable information resources in tertiary institutions

This study investigated the extent of electronic resource access and usage for scholarly research work by post graduate students at University of agriculture in Abeokuta. The thrust of this paper is to discuss the points of accessing, frequency of use, usefulness and strategies to improve students’ use of electronic resources. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The target populations for this study are postgraduate students of Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The participants sampled numbered 350 postgraduate students using stratified random sampling method. Out of 350 questionnaires distributed, a total of 210 were collected representing 60% return. Based on the analysis of the data, it was found that the postgraduate students use email as a means of communication while other electronic facilities that can aid their research works were not adequately used by them. Recommendations were made for improvement.  Data collected were analysed using simple percentage, frequency counts and the mean. Information and communication technology (ICT) use studies in libraries are often approached by generalising the ICT facilities without categorisation, however, not all ICT facilities are available, accessible and used in libraries. In the case of libraries where they are available, the dearth of literature exists as to the contribution of each category to the overall perceived benefits of the ICT to library services. Based on the categorisation by Gama (2007), this study was carried out to determine the influence of ICT facilities viz; computing facilities, film/tape-based facilities, reproduction facilities, telecommunication facilities and broadcasting facilities on perceived benefits to library services in the first generation universities in the southwest, Nigeria. A survey of correlational type was conducted using a total of enumeration of 107 staff in the study area. Data was collected through an adapted questionnaire and Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation was conducted to determine the correlation of each ICT facilities with perceived benefits to library service while multiple regression was conducted to determine the relative contribution of each independent measures to the dependent measure. The study found that only computing, broadcasting and telecommunication facilities influenced ICT benefits to library service, though all of the ICT facilities put together relatively contributed to the perceived benefits of ICT to library services. The study, therefore, recommended that film/tape-based facilities and reproduction facilities should be given the required attention by libraries in service delivery so as to better serve the library clients qualitativel

Health-related Programme and Activities of Public Libraries: A proposed framework

    Get PDF
While the way we consume information in our society is evolving, libraries are also dynamic and ever-changing. Libraries still matter, whether because of their access to a vast collection of books, the expertise of their librarians, or simply because they're a fantastic location. Public libraries can reach out to their users through these activities, creating awareness and interest in healthy lifestyles, providing access to high-quality health information, and eventually improving citizen health literacy. A framework is proposed by synthesizing prominent pieces of literature to guide through the rest of the study in providing a reference for the library for establishing health-related activities or programmes.   Keywords: Online learning; digital resources; Malaysian students; Higher education eISSN: 2398-4287 © 2022.
